I couldn't see a thread about this, so have started one. Hope it is not a duplicate.

Have found it more and more saccharine but love the scenery.

And love reading comments.

Any one thinking of watching?

No he didn't, the real Siegfried's wife Audrey was terribly posh and had lots of money, they went off to live in a country house.
The current TV series is starting to veer away from the books rather a lot which concentrated more on animals and their owners and are much less " soapy"

Just got around to watching the special now - lovely, but wish I had waited until Christmas Day. I'm still outraged by how they just gave away Oscar the cat, though! He'd been with Helen for months and she had nursed him back to health - how could she? I'm sure they could have found another cat actually in need of a new home for the little girl.

Yes, I may be overreacting as I also have a cat named Oscar snuggled up next to me as I type this.

Houseplanter · 22/12/2023 19:20

@SnowDiaries I agree. Poor cat just cast off because she'd had a baby!

Shocking

eggandonion · 22/12/2023 20:46

My late mother would have been a similar age and firmly believed that cats jumped into prams and sucked the breath from babies. So maybe rehoming cats was good practice?
I had a cat when I had babies. He didn't do the above!

TitsInAbsentia · 22/12/2023 21:42

As we watched tonight DH recounted (yet again...sigh) how he was almost smothered by a cat as a wee yin...

I loved the Christmas episode despite all it's predictability. I feel by the time I've watched the Call the Midwife special I may feel reborn...

Samcro · 22/12/2023 22:01

The young vet , was he in the books?

eggandonion · 22/12/2023 23:42

@TitsInAbsentia I watched an Episode of Dr Finlays casebook about 100 years ago about a wee baby whose death was blamed on his mammys Persian cat because of fur in his mouth. But on analysis... using a gas powered microscope it was so long ago...it was fibres from a knitted shawl that was to blame.
My mother wasn't convinced.

Yes but he wasn’t as nice. Bit snooty and arrogant, obviously more interested in the academic research side of things than in working with actual animals. He didn’t hang around very long either.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/12/2023 08:42

i liked it but felt it was very twee. So just right for Christmas. I did like 🎅🏻 in green though!

I love this programme but the part about James leaving his squadron(?) without permission to get to his pregnant wife? Utterly ridiculous. Talk about imposing modern ideas on the past, it spoilt it for me

That was in the books.

Davros · 23/12/2023 21:14

That'll teach me! 😆

Pebble21uk · 23/12/2023 21:15

Can anyone tell me about Mrs Hall's ring, please? Was that from her divorce or from Gerald? Hadn't she already turned Gerald down in the last episode?

Loved the nostalgia... very festive... I wouldn't be giving my cat away though!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound arsey...

diddl · 23/12/2023 21:15

Has there already been a story about a cat that they adopted but then gave back to the family?

It was a bit predictable that she would have the baby at Christmas wasn't it?

It was her wedding ring and as she had got the divorce she obviously felt it was time to stop wearing it.

Pebble21uk · 23/12/2023 21:20

@Katherineryan1986 Ah, thank you! That makes sense!

RallySooney · 23/12/2023 21:57

Really disappointed with the festive special. It felt very cobbled together.

Davros · 23/12/2023 22:00

@StarlightLime not arsey at all, funny! Xmas Grin

Wbeezer · 23/12/2023 23:12

I agree @RallySooney.

Maireas · 24/12/2023 07:44

The cat wasn't re-homed because of the baby. It was for the little girl, and to help the dad, who felt as if he had failed in every way, failed his daughter and failed his country. A sweet storyline.
Very touching and I loved the comedy - Siegfried and Carmody prepared to deliver the baby, and Carmody's unfortunate accident!
Lovely all round.

Clawdy · 24/12/2023 08:17

As said above, Siegfried certainly didn't marry Mrs Hall in real life. Hope they don't change it in the series.

When Carmody was asked to move in, I think that means no Tristan in the next series, sadly.

Maireas · 24/12/2023 08:41

If people are shocked about a cat being re-homed in WW2, for goodness sake don't read about the thousands of pets who were pts.
The Battle of the Atlantic was the thing that frightened Churchill the most, and the possibility of people starving. It was considered foolish to feed any animal who wasn't a working animal in some way. Total war.

eggandonion · 24/12/2023 09:06

Im sure country cats were considered to be mousers.
Helen needed the cat to focus on but now has the baby. Sad man needed a replacement cat.
So hopefully puss will be happy with his new family.

Clawdy · 24/12/2023 09:19

There's a lovely childrens storybook by James Herriot called The Christmas Day Kitten. It's not the Helen story, but it's based on a chapter from one of his novels.
