I couldn't see a thread about this, so have started one. Hope it is not a duplicate.

Have found it more and more saccharine but love the scenery.

And love reading comments.

Any one thinking of watching?

Looking forward to the baby storyline, but I really don't see Siegfried and Mrs Hall as a couple. Maybe it's because I read all the books, and in them, she's just a kindly old soul!

I don't see them as a couple.
I'm just going by the Tele series not the books

diddl · 11/11/2023 20:41

I hope that they don't try to put Mrs Hall & Siegfried together!

Does she live with them?

I don't think she did in the books.

I quite liked Gerald.

Wouldn't have missed Mrs Hall!

Although she probably would have been exchanging one housekeeping role for another!

IwantToRetire · 11/11/2023 21:36

I made an effort to watch this episode, and wasn't that impressed. Felt it was trying to hard to pull on the heartstrings, and be a build up to the Christmas Special.

I hope the baby being born isn't the focus of the the special as going by countryside, etc., baby must be due in the Autumn.

Very cross about Mrs Hall not being able to live her own live. I thought they were showing be as at at last standing up for her right to have a future about her, not everybody else.

I thought she was going to go (and expected future episodes to show it all going wrong) and that Helen would have to move back and become housekeeper (which I think in real life at the time, it would have been expected - that she would take on the female duties, and of course perform them for free).

It's enjoyable, as was the original series DESPITE having the awful hammy and shouty Robert Hardy as Siegfried. I must say I'd have preferred Mrs Hall to be as in the books, an older and slightly disapproving woman, who would not have been sitting down to meals with her employers. I guess they wanted another female role though.

Wbeezer · 12/11/2023 16:19

I don't find Robert Hardy too hammy, however I think my opinion has been coloured by reading about how OTT and eccentric his real life counterpart was!

I'm sure I read somewhere that RH met "Siegfried" who didn't like RH's interpretation of him but that they still became friends.

Maireas · 12/11/2023 17:32

I think Donald Sinclair (Siegfried) must have been the forgiving type, because he was very cross with Alf for portraying him the way he did in the books, although they maintained their friendship.

Yes-he sounds eccentric but quite the gentleman!

Supposedly he said about the books "Alfred, this book is a real test of our friendship".

Sounds very "Siegfried"!

Maireas · 12/11/2023 18:18

Indeed!

TheAverageJoanne · 16/11/2023 17:12

I find Helen quite irritating.

I loved Robert Hardy in the role, however my opinion may be coloured by the fact my late uncle was a vet and very similar to Robert Hardy in looks and very like Siegfried in personality! He always used to watch ACGAS and pointing out what they were doing wrong!

Just seen there's a All Creatures/Yorkshire Vet Christmas special coming.

James and Helen visit the Yorkshire Vets and then Peter and Shona on the set of All Creatures

Could be a nice watch.

KimberleyClark · 22/11/2023 11:06

In the books and in real life JH didn’t get very far in the RAF, he completed basic flying training but due to a health issue became no longer A1 fit. They tried to find other things for him to do, meteorologist, mechanic etc but he wasn’t much use at any of them and in the end was discharged. Doesn’t look like they are going that way in this series with talk of bomber training?

Oblomov23 · 23/11/2023 09:30

Christmas special? Can't wait!

I assume it's referring to this @JaneJeffer

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2023 17:05

Ahh I see @WhatICallMyUsername I'm not very familiar with the Yorkshire vets apart from Gogglebox clips

WhatICallMyUsername · 23/11/2023 17:08

There is a normal Christmas special too @JaneJeffer

Very pleased Mrs Hall is staying as Anna Madeley along with Sam West are such great talents.
What I don't understand though is why Gerald's sister can't come to Skeldale and live with him!? I mean, if it means her brother's happiness and he's the one doing the looking after... surely a no brainer!

I thought it would have suited everyone all around if Gerald’s sister had come to live at his house (not Skeldale that is the vet’s house). Then Mrs Hall could perhaps have become a live out housekeeper at Skeldale, married Gerald and lived with him in his cottage with his poorly sister no doubt ensconced in the front room converted to a bedroom, complete with commode 😂

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2023 17:19

Thanks @WhatICallMyUsername

I'm rewatching Mr Selfridge and there was Mrs Hall took ages to place her 😂. I'm looking forward to ACGAS.

Hedgehoglover · 18/12/2023 12:18

I never took to the previous incarnation. Found RH too irritating and false. I only came to this version this year and now I am hooked. I hope they don't try to pair off Siegfried and Mrs H. I think they are better with the current slightly formal relationship, although she is the one person he listens to when he's being completely out of line. I do hope that they can bring Tristan back. I remember Anna Madeley as a young posh nurse in The Royal and because it is repeated so often, I forget how many years ago it was first transmitted. I spent the first few episodes watching All Creatures thinking 'she's too young to play someone with an adult son'. I am looking forward to the Christmas special.

Houseplanter · 21/12/2023 09:51

Christmas special tonight!

Looking forward to this the most of all the Christmas tv.. shame it's on so early, would've been perfect Christmas Day tv imo.

Houseplanter · 21/12/2023 13:03

Just noticed that before it is the All Creatures/Yorkshire Vet special too, which I'm sure will be worth a watch

8pm and 9pm on Channel 5
