I couldn't see a thread about this, so have started one. Hope it is not a duplicate.

Have found it more and more saccharine but love the scenery.

And love reading comments.

Any one thinking of watching?

I agree with you OP that it is getting more and more saccharine. I watch it for the lovely nostalgic music and the scenery. People didn’t take their children into pubs in the 40s did they?

No. I doubt Mrs. Hall would have been drinking with her employers in there, either! It's so completely different to the original series and bears very little resemblance to the books.
Love Sam West, though, so I'm watching anyway 😄

I don't think women much went to pubs at all in the 40s. If you suspend all disbelief it's a lovely cosy show. My weekend starts with this show and a glass of wine.

My late FIL developed his own photographs. Gazillions of them found after he died. Many during the war. Women were certainly in pubs then. My MIL and her friends who were involved in a civilian capacity would go and socialize with their boyfriends. They were all single. Never saw children in any of the pictures.

BristolBlueGlasses · 19/10/2023 18:46

That's so interesting @justasking111 . Perhaps I'm thinking of women going into pubs on their own.

IwantToRetire · 19/10/2023 21:15

re pubs - I was going to post something about the difference between country / small town pubs and big cities, and teh class of the area, but then realised I probably wasn't sure my limited experience was that relevant.

But by chance found this - which sort of covers the period of the series:

ps still finding series all a bit twee and think that Sam West is now almost a parody of the charcter he first created in series 1, but as its appreciated why would he give it up!

Poor horsey Sad

I gasped when I saw it. It looked so real and I got a bit sad seeing the horse like that

The storylines have been a bit 'meh' so far. Nothing like 'Edward' or the WW1 flashback episodes from last series.

Totally agree. I wouldn't mind a few soppy bits, but then back to the real story.

It seems to have been taken over by the writers of Call the Midwife who cut out all the real problems they faced as midwives, to just have sentimental personal stories.

Seeing a horse impaled like that was about as much realism as I want from ACGAS tbh.

Can you imagine how depressing it would have been to watch the really Wesley Binks storyline.

I agree there needs to be a balance between gritty realism and wholesome cosy viewing but I've liked the series so far. The books are fairly light and humorous (from what I can remember!)

I'm excited for a baby Herriot!

They have their sad moments, too.

Maireas · 20/10/2023 14:54

The books are quite poignant in parts.

Oblomov23 · 20/10/2023 18:19

I liked student Richard!

Maireas · 22/10/2023 08:43

I did, too! Quite a good foil. I also like the way that the war is beginning to impact and hang over them all. Beautiful scenery.

justasking111 · 26/10/2023 21:29

I seem to remember this story line but a farmer wife miscarried

Clawdy · 26/10/2023 22:44

Yes, I think I remember that.

Houseplanter · 26/10/2023 22:48

My favourite tv at the moment by a country mile

Perfect escapism.

JaneJeffer · 26/10/2023 23:23

That was a really good episode. The perfect balance of humour and seriousness. Richard has such a good face for comedy!

Maireas · 28/10/2023 14:04

It was good, and Richard is a nice addition.

JaneJeffer · 28/10/2023 14:07

I love the dogs

Is Tristan coming back?

Kaftanesque · 28/10/2023 14:08

The best episode so far this series.A definite return to the warm humour that makes this such a lovely watch.

Maireas · 28/10/2023 14:12

I liked the tortoise and the fleas conundrum!

Hellocatshome · 28/10/2023 14:18

Brilliant episode but I'm obviously hormonal because I sobbed over Helen maybe losing the baby.

Houseplanter · 03/11/2023 19:38

Anyone else still watching?

I found this last episode very sad.. and not sure where the series will go now.

Is there just one episode left? Perhaps easier to guess the Christmas special plot

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2023 19:42

I didn't get to see last night so will have to wait an age to see it now
