I couldn't see a thread about this, so have started one. Hope it is not a duplicate.

Have found it more and more saccharine but love the scenery.

And love reading comments.

Any one thinking of watching?

I recommend watching the original series on Britbox if you can, it's interesting comparing the two. I find I'm preferring the original while appreciating the new version.
The farmers in the original series are brilliant, proper craggy rough character actor types who actually look like they've had a hard life, as do the cows and the farms are proper unrenovated, dingy and grim! I used to go with my Grampa to old hill farms in the lakes in the 70s visiting and they were still like that.
The original cast had daft posh accents but the chemistry between Helen and James was much more powerful and Siegfried was great
I do like the new one but find it more soppy and soapy and the cast all look too clean and well fed!

Maireas · 03/11/2023 20:01

I just couldn't cope with the casting of James and Helen. He looked like he'd been up all night with 5 kids and she looked like she'd never been on a farm.

Wbeezer · 03/11/2023 20:05

He does look a bit old, I'll give you that (the actor actually had 6 kids IRL) but I do like the way he combines earnestness and humour in his performance. I suppose nostalgia helps me suspend disbelief cos I fell in love with the whole show/ world as a 10 year old

Maireas · 03/11/2023 20:08

Herriot's family were very helpful and supportive of this new series, apparently. They were pleased to see James portrayed as a Scot, and Helen as a Yorkshire woman.

Houseplanter · 03/11/2023 20:15

I'm old enough to remember the first series and have read and re read the books.

Having re watched some of the original
Tv series I don't like it anywhere near as much as I remembered. Helen was nauseating, James garnered no empathy and although Siegfried was funny he was very ott

Love this fresh view of it. It's different enough to be good in its own right.

Tristan, though... The original was definitely better.

Maireas · 03/11/2023 20:18

Robert Hardy was too much as Siegfried. I think neither James nor Helen were particularly good performers, or perhaps it was the scripts.

Wbeezer · 03/11/2023 20:40

I'm outnumbered it seems! I do like both though, for different reasons. Peter Davison is the best Tristan though.
I think I had a bit of a girlish crush on Christopher Timothy as JH so that is probably affecting my judgement.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/11/2023 21:10

I thought this weeks one was the last of the series, I'm confused how it will continue with no James or Mrs Hall.

Why was Helen force feeding that poor cat broth? Surely if the cat wasn't already dying it would after being given marmite and water 😂

I love Tricky woo woo so glad we got to see a bit more of him this week.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 03/11/2023 21:13

Anyone else find the constant bump cradling by Helen absolutely nauseating

Highlyflavouredgravy · 03/11/2023 21:16

Also, it is veering so far from the books.
The whole Richard Carmody story is wrong and that catcwould definitely have been taken to Granville Bennet.

Was she doing a Meghan?

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2023 22:29

I loved the old ones and I love the new ones in different ways.

Clawdy · 03/11/2023 23:02

I did enjoy the old series, but much prefer the casting of the new (apart from Tristan, who I had a real crush on, back in the day!)

Maireas · 04/11/2023 09:08

Lovely rendition at the end of the Robert Burns' "My Love is like a Red, Red Rose".
Very touching.

I might have teared up at that a bit Blush

purpleme12 · 07/11/2023 17:42

It did feel like the end of a series

Houseplanter · 09/11/2023 21:10

Anyone else watching? Still can't guess how this is going to end.....

LIZS · 09/11/2023 21:13

Where's Richard ? Siegfried said" then there were two"

Houseplanter · 09/11/2023 21:22

I thought that, but Richard wasn't living in skeldale I don't think.

LIZS · 09/11/2023 21:24

Ah yes you're right they boarded him out rather than use Tristan's room (not sure what became of the cupboard James originally had)

Houseplanter · 09/11/2023 21:26

And what's happened to Helen's cat?!

eggandonion · 09/11/2023 21:29

Mrs Hall mustnt go.

Houseplanter · 09/11/2023 21:40

Wine, anyone?

Houseplanter · 09/11/2023 21:59

Well although the outcome was a bit of a let down I suppose it was to be expected. Helen and Audrey need to be at Skeldale.

But what a fantastic episode. Brilliant writing. Brilliant acting.

Roll on Christmas special.
