I first heard the term "double first cousins" from my mum, it happened in her dad's family (my grandad). I can't remember all the details, I think my great grandparents married siblings so my grandad had double first cousins. This was small town Ireland 100+ years ago when the population was smaller and I imagine lots of people met at family gatherings eg weddings. I don't think it's as common now.

😮

AquamarineNoseStud · 23/06/2023 23:40

Ah, just re-read your post..not their own siblings!!

iknowimcoming · 24/06/2023 00:43

Dh has 2 cousins (sisters) who married 2 brothers, both had kids then got divorced, then one of them married the OTHER BROTHER Shock making the kids uncle their new stepdad. This was over 20 years ago now but MIL still practically needs smelling salts if they are present at family occasions Grin

Do they live in Albert Square? If not, they should. They'd fit in straight away.

No....I know I said small town Ireland a long time ago, but I think there was a little more choice than that. Like iknowimcoming 2 brothers married 2 sisters, or a combination of that. I can't remember exactly which way round it was, and my mum/grandparents are no longer alive to ask

VivienneDelacroix · 24/06/2023 03:13

Someone I know has recently left her husband for his brother!!! Poor kids. It's such a risky (selfish) thing to do - I wouldn't have the nerve, I'd suck it up and resign myself to being on my own rather than tear the family apart like that.

Hear that sound of frantic note-taking?

That's the Eastenders scriptwriters.

No its not I misread

AutumnalLeaves38 · 24/06/2023 08:45

Ha! I'm boxsetting the '90s prison drama Bad Girls, and now know what Shirley Carter was up to 24 years ago! 😉

That's much more the Archers type type behaviour. They'd fit in better in Ambridge than Albert Square.

Are we still talking about EE or have I stumbled onto the Who Do You Think You Are? thread? 😊

I re watched the 90s years with Cindy Ian David etc during covid
It was great viewing.
But I don't buy they would get together again. Unless both are faking.

That's a likely outcome. Cindy is obviously still in love with George and Ian is a long-term liar!

GulesMeansRed · 24/06/2023 09:47

Because I am really sad, I looked on Wiki to see which characters currently in the show were there when Cindy "died" in 1998, apart from Ian and Kathy.

Sharon, Martin Fowler, Sam and Phil Mitchell, Sonia, Ben (but would have just been a toddler in 1998), Billy Mitchell.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 24/06/2023 11:31

And Winston and Tracey 😂

Optimist1 · 24/06/2023 11:54

And Shrimpy!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 24/06/2023 13:22

I couldn’t remember how long Shrimpy had been knocking round!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 24/06/2023 16:40

The only response to that episode is this.

Since 2014.

Many Shrimpy best bits (eurgh, that sounds like one of Jean's recipes).

Loved it when Kathy once called him a "pretentious sod", for ordering (via Martin) a decaf soy macchiato.
Kathy: "Tell him he can either have 'frothy' or 'not so frothy' coffee. We're busy".
😆

the80sweregreat · 24/06/2023 20:12

Shrimps is an enigma.
Keeps it under his hat

AutumnalLeaves38 · 24/06/2023 20:44

I like to imagine he keeps a photo of TraceyBarmaid under his trilby (like Patrick does with one of Yolande).

They have a thing going, believe me!

Not sure. My brain sometimes hurts thinking of it. In its simplest form, an example....

Bob and Mary get married. At their wedding, Bob's brother John meets Mary's sister Susan, and they get married as well. Bob and Mary have a son, Jack. John and Mary have a daughter Alice. Jack and Alice are double first cousins. Jack and Alice have 2 sets of grandparents but they are the same sets of grandparents.

Let's compare this to my own family. I have two sets of grandparents. My cousin Theresa also has two sets of grandparents, but only one set in common (ie our dads parents).

I'll see if I can do a diagram. 🙂
