LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

Jen and Rob were robbed!
The brothers sold tech gadgets on the last day to get a taxi (I think), having almost run out of money.

If that's allowed again, then the way to win is have some easily saleable items to get you to the finish line. It's not the spirit of the game though.

Yes I agree with you. Be interesting to see if anything in the rules about that this time. Apparently nothing mentioned previously as I presume the organisers thought everyone would be above board, but series 1 had the teachers sending the 2nd placed team in the wrong direction on purpose so maybe they like a bit of controversy .

QuietlyConfident · 23/03/2023 11:31

The winners last season were uncle and nephew not brothers. I'm conflicted because selling the iPod at the last moment was a terrible cheat, but on the other hand they were a lovely pair and their instinct to give half their winnings to charities supporting Brazilian street children seemed completely genuine.

A big deal was made of Monique handing over all her modern kit at the start, not just the phone as in previous series, so I think they've closed that loophole.

Choconut · 23/03/2023 11:54

Ladi and Monique my faves so far, he especially just seems like a really nice guy.

IsabelleSE19 · 23/03/2023 12:05

Race Across the World is one of my very favourites – I love it!

Ladi is lovely - at the moment it's very interesting to compare him (favourably!) to the other dad, but there is time for the other one to redeem himself/have a 'journey' at least.

I also like the friends although was facepalming at them being stuck in the park for so long. And I really like Zainab and Mobeen as well – she gives me a very cool punk vibe in looks and attitude. I was so glad they didn't go with her idea of going back to Vancouver and then to the island – they'd have been stuck there for a week!

The brothers are interesting - they talk a bit as if they've been estranged, so I don't know if there's more to it, like there was with the uncle/nephew last year.

I was a bit sceptical about Canada as a location, but it is stunning, and the challenges at the moment seem to come from the public transport issues rather than language/cultural barriers.

ellebelli · 23/03/2023 12:23

Ah yes I remember being disappointed that the teachers won.
Loved Rob and Jen(she was so funny)though I also liked the uncle and nephew team and actually I liked them all the 2nd series.

I love this program, Canada looks beautiful. I’m glad the couples are all normal people not insta influencer wannabes.

I think this is why I enjoy this programme so much tbh

martinisforeveryone · 23/03/2023 16:21

Thanks @Whitney168

One of the previews I read gives a tiny bit of detail
Cathie is 49 and runs two pharmacies with her husband She's been friends with 48 year old Tricia since they were 13. It's Tricia who's partially sighted, she has a new job since the adventure. The blurb says she was a bank clerk, but I'm sure I heard someone was a compliance officer, so presume that was her role, she's changed fields now though

Claudia is 27 and her dad, Kevin, 53 is Taxi Man. They're from Southampton. She's a product developer and buyer and he's a marine canopy maker

Ladi, 52 and Monique, 25 are father and daughter. She lives in East London working in events management and he's in Essex where he's involved in the sports and physical activities industry. Very close in age to Claudia and Kevin

Marc, 36 is a lift operator and his brother Michael, 34, is a children's services manager. Both of them are in the West Midlands

Zainib is a 32 year old psychiatrist from Glasgow and is married to 31 year old Mobeen from Manchester and he's a junior registrar trauma orthopedic surgeon

I like how you see the various strategies and approach to problem solving and how the relationships are affected by all their activities over the course of the race. Ladi's work skills have definitely helped with his can-do and crack on attitude so far. Let's hope it rubs off a bit on his daughter.

Really enjoying this so far. Claudia and Kevin were first to sign their names in the book, but it felt like a bit of an empty victory as they were only 17 minutes ahead and had used more of their budget than any of the other pairs (if I recall correctly). I thought the scenery was beautiful. Looking forward to next week.

I think it was the other, shorter lady who is the compliance officer .

martinisforeveryone · 23/03/2023 16:56

@Piggywaspushed I thought it was Cathie too when the voice over was on, but I've read two articles now about the 'two pharmacies she runs with her husband' unless she's just a company director in that business, but not physically working in them?

RaraRachael · 23/03/2023 16:58

I loved the first series as it went through lots of interesting countries, but I didn't like the retired PE teachers who won (particularly the woman as I remember).
I didn't watch series 2 as I wasn't interested in those countries but looking forward to this one as I've always wanted to visit Canada.

I'm quite liking the lady friends at the moment and Ladi, but I think his daughter might be a bit of a princess. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong,

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2023 16:58

Oh ! She went on about being too obedient and following the rules and then ssud ,'maybe that's why I'm a compliance officer '. Oh well.

martinisforeveryone · 23/03/2023 17:08

That was when I heard it then. Thanks @Piggywaspushed

Yiayoula · 23/03/2023 17:13

Thanks, martinisforeveryone - good to have a bit of background info whilst we get to know everyone .
Haven’t chosen a favourite couple yet , love Ladi but his daughter grates on me , early days I guess.
Relieved Cathie and Tricia made it out of the park, was surprised only 17 minutes between all the teams at the end.
Series 1 , I was completely Team Alex and Darron , Series 2 was torn between Jen and Rob ( will never forget her yellow coat, or the guinea pig evening meal ! ) and the uncle and nephew who won, they were lovely .
Very much looking forward to next week - hoping for more ingenuity and less taxis !

Maireas · 23/03/2023 17:38

I felt very uncomfortable when Kevin was having a go at his daughter, speaking to her as if she were a recalcitrant teen.
I really like Ladi and Monique, and Zainib and Mobeen. She's quite the character!

Newestname002 · 23/03/2023 18:01

I'm so pleased this is back on TV. I'm looking forward to seeing how the relationships between the separate teams plus the group as a whole develop. As well as seeing the beautiful Canadian scenery. 🌹

Maireas · 23/03/2023 18:40

Canada just looks amazing. What incredible scenery. It's pricey though, to judge by the cost of those beers Kevin and Claudia were drinking.

Tarkan · 23/03/2023 18:42

I've just watched the first episode today and I'm loving it. I'm Team Zainab so far but I love Ladi and the two female friends too. I watched the first two series when they were on and weirdly I was thinking about them the other week and couldn't remember what the show was called.

I didn't think I would enjoy this series as much as the first two there isn't the language difficulty but the lack of easy transport has definitely filled that gap. It'll be interesting to see how differently the journeys go for the teams when they're not relying on once-a-week ferries too.

I went to Alaska 10 years ago (stayed in Juneau but the plane had to stop in Ketchikan one way and Sitka the other) and the scenery just reminds me of when I went over there. Ketchikan isn't too far from the first checkpoint and it was flying into there that I saw a pod of whales from above. It's so amazing to watch it on TV but it's even more breathtaking in person. Smile

Yes when he told her to wipe that smirk off her face 😲 what a tosser he is.

AnnaMagnani · 23/03/2023 20:03

Really loving Ladi and Monique, enjoying seeing Monique pick up on the paying it forward.

The two ladies have an amazing friendship and I am really relating to the sight loss, as DH has lost a lot of vision and we did a big holiday last year very much so we could do it while he could see it.

TokyoSushi · 23/03/2023 21:20

Ok I've watched, I love it. It has a really different feel to the other series and I don't mind at all now that it's 'just Canada' - it looks amazing!!

Same as the others, I love Ladi's team, Zainab's team and the friends. Not keen on the other Dad or the brothers at all!

TeamSleep · 23/03/2023 21:51

I’ve just watched it on catch up, really love this series so much. I can’t believe the brother’s managed to get there with the detour at the start, they were so lucky to get that lift!

When the race first started me and DH picked who we thought would win based on first impressions. I picked the husband and wife and he picked taxi dad and daughter. By the end of the programme I am happy with my choice, him not so much! I think the daughter is in it for a good time rather than a long time by the looks of it and he just seems generally a bit useless.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/03/2023 21:52

Setting off on the next leg is at the mercy of the ferries, so Taxi Dad busting a gut and spewing the $$ is pointless as they'll all end up at the terminal together. I'd get it if it was a "last team leaves the show" round but they've pissed money up the wall for zero lead.

TeamSleep · 23/03/2023 21:53

So true @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz what was the point really!

rockingbird · 23/03/2023 22:15

Just watched the first episode, Ladi is such an amazing character I love him already! The two girls seem close, I hope they are able to motivate each other. The other father and daughter combo is an uncomfortable relationship to watch if I'm honest. 🫤
