Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

@LindorDoubleChoc what is up with the headline? I can't tell!

Yes I was confused about that, thought I must be missing something.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/04/2023 16:30

Hello, sorry been out all day. The Radio Times article only gives the locations for the first two episodes whereas I'd like to see the whole route or, if not, at least have it be a live article which gets updated every episode. That's all. I'm just grumbling again really 😬.

The Wiki article linked above has the route I think.

crispsnutsandcake · 20/04/2023 19:18

it was very telling when Claudia caught the fish and was shouting for her Dad to come down and join them and he just carried on painting

Yes, I thought that. He had a chance to praise her and connect but he didn't. Claudia and her father basically do not get on that well and I'm not sure this journey is bringing out the best in them or healing the rift.

Paloma66 · 20/04/2023 19:19

I'm not really enjoying this series. I'm bored with all the emphasis on relationships. In previous series it felt like it was all about the race and we watched the relationships develop but it wasn't the focus. I wasn't interested in seeing Zainab's family dinner for example. I want to see more about what they're up to in the race.

Jetlaggedgirl · 20/04/2023 20:19

I love a good back story and I’m still enjoying it. The only thing that’s missing is the jeopardy as the transport is so limited. I think Kevin is unfulfilled in life and is desperately trying to prove his worth. He won’t want to see his daughter succeed until he can succeed himself, it’s probably giving him the hunger to win the race more too. That wooden house Kevin and Claudia stayed in was magical .

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/04/2023 21:09

Both dh and my jaws dropped when Claudia caught the fish and said she wondered if her dad was proud, and her day said "I'm envious she caught the first fish"

Sums it up really.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/04/2023 21:19

I’m glad to find this thread and see other peoples thoughts echoing mine and DH’s. It’s become a bit boring with such limited transport and the focus on relationships.
Kevin is awful, I hope they don’t win, his first thought all the time is to go for a taxi. Love Ladi and Monique and also the two friends who I would love to win.

Fleabea · 21/04/2023 05:11

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 20/04/2023 09:12

I think there are 9 episodes

I agree but hope he runs out of money so can't pay a taxi but they can run fast

I would dump my bags at the end and run without carrying everything up to the finish line unless that isn't allowed

It is very edited but if you don't say things they won't be put into your mouth or alter what your face does during a conversation when 2 people are both in shot

Did you see him in the small coach turn around and take a photo of Cathie?

Did you notice Trish's face when he turned around to take the picture on the bus? Obviously not a fan!

BishopRock · 21/04/2023 06:39

What was he doing, taking a pic of Cathie, in the first place?????

ObiWanKanobi · 21/04/2023 08:43

Awkward!

He was taking a selfie of himself, but thrust his arm into their space to get the angle. He is such a twat.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 08:57

Just looked at the Wiki article with the route. Seems as if the last leg is from Liverpool, Nova Scotia to St John's in Newfoundland.

Google suggests the route for this as a drive up to the north end of Nova Scotia, then a ferry (which does appear to run twice a day) over to Newfoundland. Alternative is a huge detour back the way they came, and still involving a ferry. Seems like it has been engineered to have them all on the same ferry leaving Nova Scotia at the start of the final ep and a sprint to the end.

Like the last series when they were all on the same ferry at Tierra del Fuego.

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 08:59

Oh, and the ferry tickets are £70 per passenger each, one way. Could be an issue for those who have been spendy.

QuietlyConfident · 21/04/2023 08:59

I'm hoping that the fact that Kevin and Claudia are getting such a terrible edit means that they don't win. The producers know that we want to feel good about this show at the end of the day. And they're so far behind on cash. Claudia is getting about twice as much hate on Twitter as Kevin, but that's Twitter for you.

I found really interesting the scene where Zainib had a major wobble, revealing that their relationship wasn't as simple as "alpha woman and the lovely but slightly henpecked beta man who can't believe his luck" and that although they were a loving couple there was much more going on. But Twitter was all "Burn the useless whinging cow"

Sigh. That will be so annoying if that happens and will feel so contrived if they are all on the same ferry.

Of course he was! 😂

KnittingNeedles · 21/04/2023 09:05

Agree that the issue with this series has been the lack of variation in routes. Only way into Churchill was the train, only way onto the first island checkpoint was the same ferry, several times we've seen all the teams on the same bus.

purpleme12 · 21/04/2023 09:14

I don't think Zainib was being really awful.
She was grumpy and a bit human really considering I think it might have been the first time she's shown that bit of her.
I like how they made up and it didn't blow up into a proper argument with them

martinisforeveryone · 21/04/2023 11:12

I really don’t think any of them are that bad. The edit definitely seems to have pushed Claudia and Kevin’s weakest qualities and Tricia’s tears, but surely these are at their lowest times?

I don’t know how I’d cope with sore feet, hormones, frustration, budgeting, tiredness and being hangry, while spending 24/7 with someone and it all being filmed, let alone it being whittled down to just a few minutes every week.

RaraRachael · 21/04/2023 12:21

Maybe I'm missing something but say one couple had a big lead - as Kevin and Claudia have at the moment and the only way out is by a twice weekly train, Would they let them get on it and everybody else would have to wait till the next one?
I'm not particularly feeling the love for any of the couples - definitely not K and C and the business with her catching the fish just showed his true colours.
Still too much relationship angst for my liking, Maybe it will improve but I doubt it.

Dulra · 21/04/2023 13:42

I think they are all being very good at hiding their grumpiness. I would be hated on Twitter if I was on this I get very grumpy and irritable when tired and hungry. I also think people are being really unfair on Claudia and Kevin they are together 24/7! I love my dad and have a great relationship with him but I would not cope with him for that length we would not agree on anything and have killed each other long ago 😂

This just makes me pleased, once again, that I'm not on Twitter. Mumsnetters are a much more understanding bunch!

I think in series 1 the reconnection between father & son was a happy accident and that's what a lot if the audience talked about. So much so the reconnection between estranged relatives has become the main focus to the detriment of the race. The advert asking for contestants for series 4 has the headline along the lines of "Do you want to reconnect with someone".

I think @Lemevoir has hit the nail on the head here. The Darren and Alex story made series 1, and watching Alex mature as the race progressed was an absolute joy. The programme makers have been trying to reproduce that ever since, and it's unbalanced the show. I'm not sure I can be bothered to watch to the end of series 3.

I agree with this. I still remember how the relationship developed and it was a joy to watch. But the series was about the race. It was full of pace and excitement. This series seems to have lost focus and I'm bored with the naval gazing.
