Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

Apart from Claudia and Kevin I like the teams so that isn't an issue for me. But I agree, what a weird choice to have them all 'racing' for the same train. I actually really love the scenery but the checkpoint choices are really taking away from the race element.

Also they all seemed to know that the train only went twice a week - had the producers told them?

NCTDN · 15/04/2023 07:07

Yes in the first episode they never knew the ferry was only twice weekly but they all knew about the train.

purpleme12 · 15/04/2023 08:03

I presume they'd asked someone

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 15/04/2023 10:03

You’d presume by the stage they would know enough to ask somebody how often the train ran – they must’ve worked out by now transport is very infrequent.

I feel like the producers probably told them about the train. The friends knew before they even left the hotel and I'm surprised random strangers happen to know the train timetable for a train that is several hundred miles away.

I love this show! Zainib and Mobeen are my favourites. The previous two series were fab too. Would love another one where they start in uk and have to cross Europe with checkpoints in different countries.

shakeitoffsis · 15/04/2023 12:05

I love this show. Cannot warm to the two ladies at all, the taller one is constantly moaning about something or other.
Love Ladi and Monique and Zainib and Mobeen and I'd love either of them to win.

Piggywaspushed · 15/04/2023 12:21

I don't find her moany.

Actually I am rather in awe of her - she is losing her sight and wants to do something remarkable before it becomes impossible. I think she is extraordinary really.

AnnaMagnani · 15/04/2023 12:24

She's lost so much sight she uses a white stick, I think she is awesome.

purpleme12 · 15/04/2023 12:24

I don't find her moany either

Hellocatshome · 15/04/2023 12:27

Yes I dont find her moany. Considering how much sight she has already lost she doesnt bang on about it all the time in the same way Kevin and Claudia seem very hung up on their issues.

Tree543 · 15/04/2023 12:58

I'm finding the constant talk about the teams relationships a bit tedious. E.g when Monique and Claudia were on the train chatting and playing cards they were talking about their relationships with their dads. I'm sure they were chatting about another stuff but that is the one bit that was edited it in.

Gothambutnotahamster · 15/04/2023 12:59

I don't find her moany either. I do like all of them but think that the estranged father and daughter need proper counselling, not this show!

NCTDN · 15/04/2023 15:17

I have a lot of respect for the two women - also v jealous. I'd never have the nerve to do what they're doing even though I claim I'd love it.

mrsfeatherbottom · 15/04/2023 15:50

We did laugh when the guy on the phone referred to the friends (in their late 40s) as elderly!!

N4ish · 15/04/2023 17:31

I think Claudia and her dad will really regret going on the show and exposing their issues to the world. Also agree with a previous poster that the show has put me right off going to Canada - amazing scenery but seems like you have to spend hours and hours in a car to get anywhere.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/04/2023 17:55

I would just like it to be more about the travel (logistics, planning) and less about the personal growth/"journeys"/mental health of the participants. The balance seems very off but I don't know how this compares to the 2 previous series.

I would love to know what’s in their rucksacks. I have been trying to think what I couldn’t do without.

IIRC the previous series had some things about personal growth but not nearly as much - it was far more about the places and the travel (particularly series 1, I thought)

BishopRock · 16/04/2023 14:02

Series 1 was great, and the best I think. It was more about the adventure, although it touched on reconnection between relatives.

Claudia and Kevin, and Marc and his brother should never have been selected. The former because of the massive and obvious issues between them and Marc's brother because he also seemed to be deeply traumatised by what had happened to him as a child.

I think it's all very well wanting to include pairs who want to rebond like the uncle and nephew in series 2, or Ladi and Monique where Ladi hoped for Monique to become more resilient.

But accepting people with childhood trauma I think is going too far.

sashagabadon · 16/04/2023 16:29

Series 1 they all spent ages planning their routes and discussing them. I think this was because there were multiple possible routes, different countries to travel through, different transport options. I can remember one series having to decide whether to cross the Caspian Sea or go round it. The ones that crossed it got stuck on the ferry for about a week as the weather was bad and the ship just put down the anchor ! That was genuinely interesting as I had no idea that could happen ( neither did they!)
also in the South America series they had to change plans sometimes due to unrest in some of the countries and the borders closing.

awaynboilyurheid · 16/04/2023 17:22

I’ve liked seeing the Canadian wilderness and agree it must have been a nightmare filming this during covid but agree that similar routes mean they keep meeting up! However given the remote locations I guess there was no alternative. I like the two friends, very brave for the lady who has restricted vision.

NCTDN · 16/04/2023 17:33

First series was definitely the best. Maybe it was because it was something new? For me I loved how many countries they crossed through. The amount of possible routes meant they weren't all aiming for the same train or ferry!!
I too would love to see a series in just Europe.

Tourist29 · 16/04/2023 19:35

I haven’t seen the other series and am enjoying this. Will watch those at some point. I don’t see the negative aspects that some others have, thankfully

marypoppinsreturns · 16/04/2023 20:00

I'm really enjoying this, and I absolutely love Canada anyway. Haven't seen the previous series but just downloaded the first episode of the first series so looking forward to enjoying that too.
