I like it as a contrast to the other series tbh.
There aren't the language barriers, but there are certainly cultural differences.
It's not all 'samey' - there's hugely different landscapes and challenges - it's much harder with the budget and it seems much more limited options for travel than in more densely populated parts of the world. It just don't have the currency and language issues to the same degree.
We have been watching going 'ooo we'd like to go there' in a way that's different. It's much more accessible than say going to Azerbaijan or Columbia. Its somewhere thats easier to do with a child.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to go to both but have issues over security and safety with DS. DH and I probably will do something much more out there when older. We are currently talking about another back packing trip with DS in eastern Europe ATM if/when money allows.
I have to say I almost felt like travelling through Europe was overlooked/ skipped over in series one in favour of the more exotic which I felt was a shame. It was Dover then oh we've left Europe really.
If it's making viewer appreciate more exotic travel that's not a bad thing either. It will encourage them to go to other places in series one and two.
My biggest beef with this series is more about who they picked as characters which is making it feel more flat to me. The two lads who were eliminated were just badly cast. Claudia and her Dad need intensive therapy not reality TV. I find Zainib really prickly and unlikeable though I have a lot of time for Mobeen.
There's only really two couples I like that much at all, and I can't say I've become emotionally invested in them as I have in previous series.
The other problem has been the choice of check points - they've picked almost dead ends - which has kept the couple's together too much. I think having to go via Churchill wasn't a bad idea, but ending a leg there, not so great. The legs which haven't had only one train / ferry you can't possibly miss, have been much better viewing.
For me the problem isn't Canada itself - it's the casting and thought given to how/where you can have that element of race for the program.
