This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

I'm caught up now with all the episodes, I'm loving it, think it's great, I think an hour long episode isn't enough to show everything so a lot of information will be missing.

Taxi man and daughter have huge issues, when he said about leaving her with his parents because he had such a good upbringing was a bit strange, because he was basically abandoning her I thought.

I won't be around to watch the next couple of episodes so will look forward to seeing them when I'm home 😊

purser25 · 17/04/2023 08:39

I have enjoyed all three series.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/04/2023 08:43

Taxi man just seems to want to throw money at the problem rather than try and actually talk to his daughter about what is best for them both.

Series 1 was great, and the best I think. It was more about the adventure, although it touched on reconnection between relatives.

Claudia and Kevin, and Marc and his brother should never have been selected. The former because of the massive and obvious issues between them and Marc's brother because he also seemed to be deeply traumatised by what had happened to him as a child.

I think it's all very well wanting to include pairs who want to rebond like the uncle and nephew in series 2, or Ladi and Monique where Ladi hoped for Monique to become more resilient.

But accepting people with childhood trauma I think is going too far.

I think I agree.

If your immediate response to someone's backstory is "have you tried therapy?" then going on a TV series probably isn't the right prescription.

Previous couples have had issues in their relationships but not at this kind of level.

I would just like it to be more about the travel (logistics, planning) and less about the personal growth/"journeys"/mental health of the participants. The balance seems very off but I don't know how this compares to the 2 previous series.

I think in series 1 the reconnection between father & son was a happy accident and that's what a lot if the audience talked about. So much so the reconnection between estranged relatives has become the main focus to the detriment of the race. The advert asking for contestants for series 4 has the headline along the lines of "Do you want to reconnect with someone".

RaraRachael · 17/04/2023 20:09

If they're going to focus so much on rebuilding relationships they should rename the show as I am very interested in a Race Across whatever continent they choose but not remotely in people mending their broken relationships,

Me too. Disappointing. Thought it was supposed to be 1. a RACE and 2. a travel show. I'm sick of all the navel gazing on TV now.

Does anyone else think the budget seems massive this time, taxi dad spent hundreds yet they budget only went down by 5%.

Rewatched the first episode season 1 recently and they only had £1200 per person to get to Singapore.

Canada as beautiful as it is doesn’t provide enough diversity in the routes the teams take, no language barrier so it’s basically the lack of public transport that’s slowing them down!

martinisforeveryone · 18/04/2023 20:24

I can't recall the source but I think I read that the budget was somewhere between £2,400-£2,500pp, which represented the cost of a start to finish plane ticket each.

NadiSel · 19/04/2023 08:37

Cost is based on price of air flightsx2.

I want to see the Doctor’s writing…is it legible?😀

The 2 ladies are fantastic. They support each other so well. When one is down, the other supports. And even when they have knockdowns (missed bus by 5 mins, have someone offer a lift and then do a runner etc) they don’t let it get them down.

tanstaafl · 19/04/2023 10:19

Just caught an episode last night.
How did the father / daughter get from the remote lake site where she’d purposefully taken him so they could go kayaking ( beautiful place ) to the train station.
Did I miss something?
The last scene was them in a ( tv production company? ) van sheltering as there was a bear sighting.
Previously the dad had no joy asking for lifts out of the park.

There’s just been a long interview with Cathie and Tricia on Woman's Hour - v interesting. They went up Macchu Picchu after getting back from Canada, and they’re now planning a trip to the Great Wall of China…!

Worth a listen back on bbc sounds

(They didn’t reveal who won, btw)

Thats fantastic, I know they wanted to see as much as possible before (I forget which one) loses more of her sight.

Walkingtheplank · 19/04/2023 12:42

I'm not feeling the love for this anymore.

I'm so annoyed that a decision was made to wipe the ladies' advantage. They worked hard for that. They've been given nothing for free, certainly not any car/RV keys. They cant beat the men at running at the end of a leg. They cant beat the younger women at charming the locals for freebies/assistance.

Clearly other teams would have missed thetrain if the advantage had not been wiped, and teams have clearly been helped to meet connections.

Just so unfair/fixed.

Madcats · 19/04/2023 13:55

Thanks for letting me know that there were no spoilers in Womens Hour. This programme has been great to watch with DD15, not least because I usually research trips to death before we travel.

It was really unfair on the two women that they had to wait until the curfew due to safety to be allowed to leave which meant they were allowed out at the same time as everyone else. They should have delayed the others accordingly.

Pretty sure Monique and Ladi were given a lift by the production crew to the train station. I wish they were just honest like they were in the previous serious when there were riots in South America and the production team had to evacuate them all quickly for safety.

stickybear · 19/04/2023 17:05

I loved previous series and agree with a lot of what has been said here about the lack of excitement and dodgy editing etc, but I'm still enjoying it and looking forward to sitting down to watch it tonight Smile one thing I would say is that it seems too much of a coincidence to have two father-daughter duos of similar ages with such contrasting relationships, it must have been a deliberate decision by the production team or whoever is responsible for casting.

RaraRachael · 19/04/2023 17:56

I wondered why the others seemed to catch up the ladies' 25 hour lead. It makes the race element a bit pointless really.
Couldn't they have been given the time back? I'd have been furious.

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 19/04/2023 18:43

I was really confused about the women losing their 25 hours

Very unfair and producers obviously don't want them to win although I want them or the young couple to win

QuietlyConfident · 19/04/2023 19:09

Wikipedia has a blow by blow summary.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_Across_the_World_(series_3)
The friends lost 21 of their 25 hour lead the leg before - though it wasn't really highlighted in the edit. They went into leg 4 with a 4 hour lead on paper, which was cut down to 1 by the curfew. I agree it's unfair, but not as bad as you think.

Oh god, my heart's sunk. One way out. Limited transport options.

It's like Groundhog Day.

Halsall · 19/04/2023 21:21

And all on the overnight buses heading for the same point at the same time….

Stressybetty · 19/04/2023 21:43

I suppose it makes it more
competitive having them all getting the same transport. Bit dull though. Presumably the ferry to the checkpoint island will be another one a week or something

cheeseisthebest · 19/04/2023 22:03

Sorry what happened with the 2 women? I really want them to win!

Tapenade · 19/04/2023 22:04

I wonder why they all got off the train in Thompson rather than staying on to Winnipeg
