LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

It did and Monique certainly would have struggled to walk up. But it is doable.

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/04/2023 10:50

i went to watch this but watched series 1 by mistake
stuck with it,
but i really wanted to find out where they all are now and all i could find about was from Alex, young lad.
it got a bit samey with the dad saying how his son had to step up,
the pair of men were off putting, they came last but were so smug
were they signed to secrecy or was it too long ago?

I haven't seen this show before and came in half-way through the first episode so had to go back to the beginning to find out the rules etc. What I don't understand - it's a race with limited time and budget, but the participants still blow some of it on ski trips, rafting etc. which must cost quite a bit from their budget. I understand it's supposed to be an experience too and these things make for more interesting viewing, but it does seem to go against the aim of the competition. Am I missing something?

That’s been discussed a bit on this thread… with some disagreement. My feeling is each team is obliged to do an out of the way sightseeing trip at least once on the journey to make good telly. Otherwise it would be a total wasqte of time and budget.

Someone much further up disagreed saying why would you do this trip if you didn’t do any sightseeing, but it’s a competition not a holiday!

I follow both Alex and his Dad on social media.

The Dad still travels all over and reports on it. No idea about any of the others on that series.

The second series - I follow Jen & Rob - who had gorgeous twins last year!

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/04/2023 11:50

Alex from series 1 said they had to do 6 hours of sightseeing, every leg, have to keep the viewers interested.

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/04/2023 11:51

thank you @Mumsafan

I'm really enjoying this series - loving Zainab & Mobeen and also like the friends too. Harsh for the brothers to find out they were eliminated in their tent, but given they were 800km away, they were seriously far behind!

Canada looks stunning! I'm not afraid of heights but that cable car would have seriously frightened the life out of me & id have struggled to do it too!

CharliesAngels81 · 07/04/2023 18:14

I am enjoying the series hopefully it will become more challenging for the teams.

I was thinking where else could they race across? Africa? Would that be possible? I remember watching a Euan McGregor documentary when they went down africa and only 1 ferry linking Egypt and Sudan (I think could be wrong)

Maybe from Portugal to Greece but I dont know if that would be too easy? Russia would be a good one to do but for obvious reasons that cant be done.

the80sweregreat · 07/04/2023 18:41

Ewan Macgregor and Charlie someone ( another actor ) went off on motorbikes around the world. Dh had the dvds and the books.
Long way down or something?
One was called anyway

Gothambutnotahamster · 07/04/2023 18:48

They could easily do Europe again but with different checkpoints as well as something across south east Asia - there are lots of countries there that I imagine would be difficult to navigate with not much money, no phone & not speaking the language!

I'd love to be the researcher who gets to try the proposed routes in advance to check they are actually doable!

CrapBucket · 07/04/2023 18:55

I traveled a little in Covid and it was so complicated and rules kept changing to get in and out of countries. So I think Canada was the best place for this series otherwise it would have been a lot of boring visits to embassies. But next time I’d LOVE to see Africa.

Piggywaspushed · 07/04/2023 19:10

India would be good too.

Maireas · 07/04/2023 19:39

Great suggestions.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2023 19:58

They could start in Tasmania, cross Australia and go up the east Asia coast to eventually get to north Japan.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/04/2023 20:05

Was this definitely filmed during Covid?

I think the skiing, rafting etc are experiences they get in exchange for working so instead of payment for a job done they get the experience and it will have all been set up by researchers before the series starts.

TeamSleep · 07/04/2023 21:20

Forgot to say this was definitely the case with the plane ride over the mountains that Ladi and Monique did at least because I remember them cleaning the plane before they went up in it.

purpleme12 · 07/04/2023 21:50

Sometimes but often the experiences are just because they want to do them

TokyoSushi · 07/04/2023 22:18

India would be a great one! Top to bottom!

It was filmed not during lockdowns obviously but last year when there were still a lot of restrictions internationally- and the travel rules were changing constantly. Which would have made things logistically v hard, plus they may not have been able to get insurance

Tree543 · 08/04/2023 10:06

I've just watched this and it is annoying me a bit. How did Ladi and daughter find out at exactly the time as tge married couple about the RV return deal. Does this mean that now those two teams know about this they will be doing it all the time?

The two friends missed the bus and were then shown getting off a bus.
I liked the two brothers and sad that they were eliminated i thought their relationship had a lot of potential to explore.

I'm not sure what I think about Ladi and his relationship with his daughter on one hand he talks about how he wants her to be strong and independent but its all focused around the life lessons HE still has to teach her. It seems he is trying to keep her a bit dependent on him for as long as possible whilst blaming her for that.

Fleabea · 08/04/2023 10:40

@Tree543 Agree re: Ladi. He seems like a very nice bloke but keeps talking about this life lessons his daughter still needs to learn when he has had all of her life to have taught them to her already. If his daughter is a bit of a brat then that is all on him (although I suspect there is selective editing involved).

Paloma66 · 08/04/2023 19:47

I'm enjoying it because the scenery is amazing and I like the challenge between the couples, but it's not the same as the previous series. It all feels a bit staged somehow, all the people generously offering lifts etc. like they want to be on tv.

It's a shame as the first series was one of my favourite series ever. I loved it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 08/04/2023 19:51

who did you want to win the first series @Paloma66

I don't remember the names but there was a father and son. I think they came second. Watching how their relationship developed was a privilege.
