Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

yes they stood out that and the two women, one of whom had recently divorced.

Ewan Macgregor and Charlie someone ( another actor ) went off on motorbikes around the world. Dh had the dvds and the books.
Long way down or something?
One was called anyway

Long way round, long way down and long way up.

Boorman also did Race to Dakar and By Any means with Russ the producer, and I'd recommend all of these to anyone who likes Race Across the World if you haven't seen them even though some are some years old.

The trouble with Africa is security. McGregor and Boorman had to do training for it, in case they got into trouble which is featured in the series.

And like I say above that was some years ago and by all accounts travel security in many places on the continent has got worse in recent years. I don't know how wise hitch hiking would be and that has been a major feature of all three series.

I suspect you could do something but I doubt completely north to south, certainly not without own transport like McGregor and Boorman.

Geopolitics generally has got more complex in the last few years. Long Way Round also wouldn't be possible now for example too.

Btw I thought it amazing that series 1 was 12k miles. This series is 16k which gives some invite into just how bit and remote Canada is and why it's not necessarily as easy as it might appear.

I am not feeling the contestants as much this series though I'm afraid. Just not as likeable.

purpleme12 · 08/04/2023 20:14

I loved both the series with Ewan MCGregor and Charlie Boorman. Watched them when i was abroad. So it reminds me of good memories abroad as well.

Not watched the more recent one they did mind

SwedishEdith · 08/04/2023 21:07

Just watched the Michael Palin programme where he reminisces about his previous trips. Tonight's was Africa and he made that point about how much of it is now closed off again and how his trips wouldn't be possible now.

purser25 · 08/04/2023 21:43

When I was there if you walked up you could go down for free.

purser25 · 08/04/2023 21:43

When I was there if you walked up you could go down for free.

I think it depended on the time of day when I was there (2018 and 2019). I remember a couple who had walked up asking if they could go down for free and being refused. They decided to walk back down

purser25 · 09/04/2023 08:12

Well it was 2000 when I was there. Wonder if they went up and down for free.

stonkytonk11 · 09/04/2023 10:31

Just watched episode 3...feel like I've just watched three identical episodes. Boring, staged and makes for a long episode. Hopefully the next series will be more varied

Skeusenner · 09/04/2023 12:36

If anyone hasn't seen the first two series, it is definitely worth checking them out.

the80sweregreat · 09/04/2023 12:43

I'm watching series one on I player and it's pretty good
Even getting out of the Uk was difficult for one couple and this was pre covid and any major train strikes !
The currency and language barriers are hard too.

Countmeout · 09/04/2023 12:49

I’ve caught up now. Im another one who watched series one by accident. Really enjoyed that one. Can someone link the Instagram for the father and son? I was disappointed they didn’t win.

I’ve downloaded Series two to watch on the plane in a few weeks.

Series 3 I agree so far is not as compelling as Series one. I like trains and there hasn’t been a train.

how funny, that you made the same rookie error,
it was good though, we were committed to see it through

fourhours · 09/04/2023 16:02

Our iPlayer initially started series 1 too, we realised straight away and changed to series 3 but definitely going to go back and watch 1 + 2 when we have time!

Countmeout · 09/04/2023 16:32

Thanks @Crumpetdisappointment

Errmmmmmmmmmmm · 09/04/2023 21:16

just started watching (bit behind). love it! Didn't think one country would be so interesting but it is! can't decide who my favourite pair is yet 🤔

I think Canada has been the wrong choice for this series, I'm enjoying it but it is absolutely nowhere near as good as series 1 & 2 which are both amazing!
Agreed I was thinking as I watched last night that it would be harder to travel through rural Ireland with zero public transport and not a sinner to be found bar a few cows and sheep, and the road signs are generally in Irish and often pointing the wrong away, they'd have no chance 😂

Rural Ireland would be great for exciting race dynamics. Getting chatting in Kerry could lose hours and be a total game changer 😂

I once had to ask a farmer if could use his phone (total mobile blackspot) and he was very friendly and obliging, but we did have common language issues even though I wasn't that far from family and used to their accents. Ireland is so gloriously familiar but distinct too.

I'm hoping the pace picks up as the teams move east. The brothers being 800km out as they were eliminated was a long way off the other teams. More variety of transport and potential glitches will improve the pace.

Yiayoula · 10/04/2023 08:53

Thanks for posting the Instagram link, Crumpetdisappointment. Great user name, btw ! )
Alex obviously a seasoned traveller now, great to see him exploring the world with confidence and maturity.
India top to bottom would be amazing for the next series .
Does anyone know if the same production / editing team were used across all three series ? - as something very “off” with this one .
Will still be watching , though …..

Mumsafan · 10/04/2023 10:26

Agree with the Charlie Boorman programmes - some of them were brilliant - off the beaten track places

Countmeout · 10/04/2023 10:50

Was thinking of routes. London to Kandy might be interesting if it were possible.

Salacia · 10/04/2023 11:55

I’m enjoying it and surprised by all the negativity here! It obviously wasn’t going to be an easy series to organise between COVID and increasing political instability/active wars popping up in regions that would likely be through routes. It’s pretty impressive they’ve been able to put anything together at all! I like the couples, the scenery is gorgeous. It’s obviously not as exciting or varied as the first routes but I can see finances being especially challenging with this one (especially as they get closer to the end).

Hopefully things will settle travel wise and we’ll get another more varied route next time. Perhaps Japan/the Pacific Islands/South East Asia (north of Japan to somewhere in Indonesia perhaps via South Korea) or India and Nepal? Everest base camp to Sri Lanka? Nepal to Madagascar via the Persian Gulf, Tanzania etc?

Gothambutnotahamster · 10/04/2023 13:05

I agree with you @Salacia - I do find the negativity on here a bit annoying, so skim read most posts as don't want them to ruin my enjoyment of the show!

purpleme12 · 10/04/2023 19:01

Some threads can get like that i find. I refuse to let the negativity get to me!

Gothambutnotahamster · 10/04/2023 19:07

Me too @purpleme12 Grin

TokyoSushi · 07/04/2023 22:18

India would be a great one! Top to bottom!

I would love to watch that! Would be amazing.
