Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

The problem with this series is that Canada is a pretty easy place to travel across so not great TV. People speak the language, are mostly pretty friendly and there are only a few roads so not many route choices. Me and DP reckon you could do the whole route pretty easily by just going from RV parks and just asking who is leaving the next morning and where are they going. Canada has a huge RV touring community and they are usually a very helpful bunch.

TokyoSushi · 06/04/2023 11:43

I think Canada has been the wrong choice for this series, I'm enjoying it but it is absolutely nowhere near as good as series 1 & 2 which are both amazing!

Agreed I was thinking as I watched last night that it would be harder to travel through rural Ireland with zero public transport and not a sinner to be found bar a few cows and sheep, and the road signs are generally in Irish and often pointing the wrong away, they'd have no chance 😂

Agreed. It's a little tedious compared to previous series when they had to make choices on transport cost v speed etc. It's all hitchhiking and I feel we're missing some of the interesting little details like the cost of meals etc. I also miss them crossing borders, and there's very little variation in the scenery and climate.

I'll keep watching, but not really loving it.

TokyoSushi · 06/04/2023 12:56

It's also all very 'safe' - apart from the bears!

RaraRachael · 06/04/2023 13:36

I'm finding it quite boring tbh - just hitchhiking as there's so little public transport. I'm sorry the brothers have gone as I was just starting to warm to them. I'm still finding taxi dad annoying - I can't understand how he and his wife appeared to own the pub between them, yet when they split up, "He was left with nothing and had to eat beans on toast". Wouldn't they have got half each?
My favourites are Zainib and her husband. I'm starting to find the friends a bit annoying. If you were likely to have such a panic attack at the prospect of travelling in a cable car, would you not have checked that the journey wasn't going to involve this mode of transport?

Maireas · 06/04/2023 13:47

You're right about the hitching, and really Kevin and Claudia getting a ride for that entire stage wasn't very interesting.

Justmuddlingalong · 06/04/2023 14:23

I'm still watching, but I'm finding it a bit samey every week.
Canada looks breathtaking, so I'll continue watching for that, but the choppy editing is irritating me.

I haven't seen this show before and came in half-way through the first episode so had to go back to the beginning to find out the rules etc. What I don't understand - it's a race with limited time and budget, but the participants still blow some of it on ski trips, rafting etc. which must cost quite a bit from their budget. I understand it's supposed to be an experience too and these things make for more interesting viewing, but it does seem to go against the aim of the competition. Am I missing something?

Yiayoula · 06/04/2023 16:04

Episode 3 , and even the bison are beginning to look bored ….
The scenery is undeniably stunning, but anyone else wondering if this series has been sponsored by the Canadian Tourist Board ? - “ Do come visit , the people are so friendly and will drive hundreds of miles out of their way to help random English backpackers ! “
With a camera crew .
All a bit convenient ….

Couldn’t help laughing when the girls were promised a lift and the guy vanished , obviously snuck out the back of the store .
He’s probably at the bottom of Lake Louise now as punishment for Not Being On Message ………

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2023 16:06

I don't mind it being in Canada. Not sure what else the producers could have done considering the limitations when it was made.I like seeing Canada and realising how empty so much of it is. It's going to get busier as they go east and go through some French-only speaking areas. Monique gets on my nerves and I'm not exactly sure what Claudia's beef is now with her dad Kevin's quite fit. I'm sad the brothers have gone - just starting to open up. The friends won again but, really, there should have been no doubt about that as had over a day's head start. I mean, they've clearly got a good supportive relationship but they come across as pretty boring.

Yiayoula · 06/04/2023 16:16

Anyway, I’ve picked the team I’ll be rooting for - Zainib and Mobeen .
She seems feisty , and I’m hoping for a few fireworks to liven up the series , but ultimately they work well together and strike a good balance between the need for fun and keeping in the race .

Something that's bugging me is that in the recap last night, they showed the clip of the guy with the trailer and dogs who Zainab asked "are you going to kill is?", BUT he had a plain white t-shirt on. I distinctly remember in the original episode he was wearing a t-shirt with Garth from Wayne's World on it. Why would they take that out??

In other news, glad the brothers were first out although they were sweet. Agree with PPs that pub dad and daughter were CFs and I felt bad for Uncle Norm!

I guess it was a copyright thing but why it was okay one episode to have Garth face on a t-shirt but not the next beats me. Nice bit of digital deletion though!

Tribollite · 06/04/2023 21:43

I felt bad for the friends - one guy giving them a 'good luck' brush off when they asked for a lift, then the other guy lying about giving them a lift and leaving them to wait half an hour. I wouldn't be thick skinned enough to keep trying after that!

IceandIndigo · 06/04/2023 22:20

Disappointed that taxi dad and daughter are still there when they basically just took advantage of the kindness of strangers.

Did the brothers actually end up getting a lift with the gun-toting, moose-eating Texan? The next minute they were getting into an RV with a nice old lady.

I’m not sure I believe that behind the scenes article that none of the jobs are set up. The Chinese guy making the fritters particularly felt like a set up. I’m sure he could make them more quickly on his own then training people who were going to leave immediately. I also think it’s surprising that we hardly ever see them eating or budgeting for food.

Lemevoir · 06/04/2023 22:50

If you were likely to have such a panic attack at the prospect of travelling in a cable car, would you not have checked that the journey wasn't going to involve this mode of transport?

I think that's a bit unfair as the cable car was the only way to get to the checkpoint. None of the contestants could have known that's where the checkpoint would be, esp as exact details are only sent to them when they are in the general area.

RaraRachael · 06/04/2023 23:17

There's no way in the world I would go in a cable car or helicopter for example so if that was part of the challenge I'd have to exit.

EddieHoweisMYmanager · 06/04/2023 23:28

Just caught up, I really like the friends, they have such a lovely friendship and are doing so well. Also a fan of Mobeen and Zainab. I’m really enjoying the series but I’m pretty easily pleased. I’m just glad it’s back on!

ellebelli · 06/04/2023 23:30

Eurgh for me...get the friends out!
Sad the brothers left.
Moreen and wife to win...but that's the problem with this series..I simply don't cate enough

Fleabea · 07/04/2023 00:18

Just managed to catch up. I was unsure about Zainab and Mobeen to begin with but I am now warming to them. Although I hope Mobeen is not working in a hospital near me given the number of times he said he failed his medical exams 😳

Custardbanana · 07/04/2023 00:19

I'm not enjoying this series as much as the first 2. I think there was more of a challenge when they had to cross country boarders. I guess they kept it in 1 country for COVID travel reasons but it seems so heavily produced and edited.

Saying that I much preferred the premise of the TV show Lost on ch4 which was similar but instead of them travelling from point to point. They were dropped somewhere in the world with some money and they had to work out where they were and then race their way home to london.

curtaintwitcher23 · 07/04/2023 08:49

I think Barry ( the chain puller) was put off when, after agreeing to take Cathie and Tricia she introduced herself in a super perky way, he probably anticipated hours of 'nice' chitchat and decided to leg it.

I totally agree with everyone re the bizarre editing.

BestIsWest · 07/04/2023 10:06

You can walk up Sulphur Mountain - the cable car is not the only way. Would take a couple of hours. I’ve walked down it.

I didn't know that and the way the programme was edited made it look as though that was literally the only way to the checkpoint.
