Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

I'm interested in the food angle in the middle of nowhere. Do the service stations sell enough food to keep
you going? Are they carrying huge stashes of flapjacks and even drinking water.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/04/2023 11:24

I'm enjoying rewatching the first two seriesat the moment. I saw something that Alex in series one said about a cool job they did that was not shown on the show then ate with the family who owned the business so we might not see all the are doing.

Maireas · 02/04/2023 11:38

I agree that in previous series we saw them budgeting for food as well. I remember that young man having a treat with the spaghetti! It's just not as compelling this time.

NadiSel · 02/04/2023 11:55

I was really looking forward to this. Loved the first 2 series. I’ll keep my hopes up that this one improves.

Editing sucks though.

There has to a white water rafting task or a 2 seat canoe task somewhere.

I used to have friendly arguments with an American friend about which was better. This or The Amazing Race. The American version was rubbish. Lots of false tension building up to them running about 10yards to get into a car!

So who’s up for the chop this week? My money’s on the 2 friends, who I really like because they get stuck into everything. Big lead but they couldn’t find their way out of the park 😂

Thanks @Whitney168

One of the previews I read gives a tiny bit of detail
Cathie is 49 and runs two pharmacies with her husband She's been friends with 48 year old Tricia since they were 13. It's Tricia who's partially sighted, she has a new job since the adventure. The blurb says she was a bank clerk, but I'm sure I heard someone was a compliance officer, so presume that was her role, she's changed fields now though

Claudia is 27 and her dad, Kevin, 53 is Taxi Man. They're from Southampton. She's a product developer and buyer and he's a marine canopy maker

Ladi, 52 and Monique, 25 are father and daughter. She lives in East London working in events management and he's in Essex where he's involved in the sports and physical activities industry. Very close in age to Claudia and Kevin

Marc, 36 is a lift operator and his brother Michael, 34, is a children's services manager. Both of them are in the West Midlands

Zainib is a 32 year old psychiatrist from Glasgow and is married to 31 year old Mobeen from Manchester and he's a junior registrar trauma orthopedic surgeon

I like how you see the various strategies and approach to problem solving and how the relationships are affected by all their activities over the course of the race. Ladi's work skills have definitely helped with his can-do and crack on attitude so far. Let's hope it rubs off a bit on his daughter.

”he’s a marine canopy maker” For A moment I muddled canopy and canapé in my head and thought the marines had a more charmed life than I realised

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 02/04/2023 14:27

I’m sure it’s Cathie who keeps going on about compliance - they’re a lovely pair

rockingbird · 02/04/2023 14:51

I want to hear more about the upbringing in the pub, Kevin touched on this and it obviously had an impact on the family as a whole - don't like him but I feel the need to know. I really hope the brother can keep going as I can see the confidence growing and this whole journey is going to do him the world of good! Not sure about the two friends? I see them being booted out first. Im enjoying it but didn't see the previous one so maybe that's why.

RaraRachael · 02/04/2023 15:12

They couldn't find their way out of the park yet they now have an inexplicable 25 hour lead!

Not inexplicable. They hired a car immediately so blasted straight up to Whitehorse via a short diversion for a very quick job in return for bed and board and then got lucky with a trucker going all the way to Dawson.

The boys diverted a long way to go rafting. The doctors diverted a long way to go flying. Monique and Ladi diverted with their car shares to sightsee. Kevin and Claudia diverted for work. At least one of the teams spent almost a whole day waiting for a lift at Whitehorse.

Skeusenner · 02/04/2023 16:25

I love the programme and I have watched all 3 series.

2 things I couldn't understand in Ep. 2

Ladi and Monica were driving a VW and it broke down. Next thing they are on the ferry. How did they get there?

Taxi dad and daughter (you can see I am good with names!) spotted the friends in the hire car in front of them on the Highway. They were a LONG way ahead, how did they know it was them?

Comments gratefully received, thanks.

Skeusenner · 02/04/2023 16:54

Thanks for that. ☺

WalkingInArgentière · 02/04/2023 19:27

This series is not holding my interest at all. Agree with the previous poster who mentioned it might just be people hitching rides across the country.

With, maybe, some sightseeing thrown in. The landscape and nature are nice but then there are nature and wildlife documentaries.

I assume that the crew member travelling with taxi dad alerted them to the fact that they were passing the friends because it would make good telly and wouldn't affect the outcome.

No idea how Ladi and Monique fixed the car though.

RaininginDarling · 03/04/2023 10:18

Agree with OP: the editing this series has been odd - but so too are the routes they've sent them on, meaning they're all forced to do the same things at the same time (catch a ferry, drive the same long road). I hope it picks up.

Very surprised no explanation was given re: broken down camper van and how Monica and Laddy(?) reached the ferry on time.

Tarkan · 03/04/2023 12:06

I don't know if anyone else has also been watching Tempting Fortune but it's making me like every single person in RatW a LOT more.

I'm really hoping as they move east that we see more variety in how they travel though. Like others have said it's been a bit boring so far but I know there should be more variety in public transport the further they go.

I'm also hoping none of them speak French and they find locals in Quebec who don't speak English, it's the only place there could be a language barrier although I know it won't be hard for them to find an English speaker there even with that though.

the80sweregreat · 03/04/2023 12:20

I'm watching tempting fortune and I really like it
As an experiment of how selfish people can be it's great , even those who probably arn't normally like this.
Hope there is a twist that those taking an expensive gift will lose out at the end maybe?
I am enjoying the scenery in race across the world , I'll probably never go , so it's good to see a bit of the world , even if it's only on tv !

Tempting Fortune.. anyone? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4771912-tempting-fortune-anyone

Tarkan · 04/04/2023 00:45

Thank you @Skyeheather I didn't want to hijack this thread (and I didn't actually know there was a TF thread of its own) but they're an interesting watch together I have to say. I do still prefer the premise of RatW but they both have their own things going on too. I already know I would be better on RatW than I would be on TF. Blush

QuietlyConfident · 05/04/2023 21:22

Kevin is getting such a Villain Edit.

TokyoSushi · 05/04/2023 21:44

Zainab & Mobeen to win for me, I love them!

Halsall · 05/04/2023 21:54

They’ve done it again with not explaining how these things happen! The two friends had just missed the bus to Banff - next minute we see them getting into Banff off a bus! How??

And now she can’t get on a cable-car…..so bad on someone obviously in total terror.

Hellocatshome · 05/04/2023 22:05

Out of the 4 that are left I wouldn't mind any of them winning apart from Taxi dad (Kevin?) and daughter. There is a bit too much woe is me from him about working 24/7 7 days a week and her about having working parents and growing up in a pub. These things happen its not the end of the world for either of them and I think they need to stop banging on about it.

the80sweregreat · 05/04/2023 22:07

I'd like Zainab and Mobeen to win as well! Those two are fab
The two friends are equally nice.
I did feel sorry for the brothers
Uncle Norman looked a tad fed up by it all.
I'm assuming they can't use car sat navs ? .. or can they ?

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 05/04/2023 22:47

It’s still not gripping - just too many loooong straight roads and lift blagging and kindly Canadians. At least we finally get a train next week
