This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

I'm finding it a little bit artificial compared to previous series. All these lovely people are offering them lifts and becoming their best friends, I'm a bit cynical and wondering if its all because they are accompanied by a BBC film crew.

Canadian's are famously open and friendly though - it's something Michael Moore talks about in 'Bowling for Columbine'.

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2023 16:35

Apols for errant apostrophe!!

Went searching and found this, which is great if you understand French. Looking forward to watching tomorrow. No luck elsewhere.

I do like Ladi but I find it odd he's had all of Monique's life to instil his values in her so suggesting she's an inconsiderate princess doesn't make sense because that's on him. I know I'm probably awful but he seems a bit of a good guy try hard.
I appreciate these back stories and sound bites are probably thrust on them by the production companies.

Zainib is just so beautiful and also seems lovely.

Claudia seems to have lots of unresolved issues from her childhood and Kevin seems to me very much like the sort of guy that pops up on LTB threads on here, I find them uncomfortable viewing.

I'm surprised to see so much love for Jen from last season I found her insufferable and at times emotionally abusive to Robbie - made for interesting viewing through.

It's such a brilliant show and refreshingly hasn't been ruined by fame seeking influencer types, just hope we can get a bit more invested in the teams.

I feel for Marc but they are just a bit dull and no screen presence I'm curious why they were picked.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 31/03/2023 23:51

Caught up with ep2 this evening. It's just a bit dull.
I mean scenery is beautiful but there's none of the excitement of the previous 2 seasons so far.

jumpinsback · 01/04/2023 07:53

Agree - it's dull! Nothing much to see but mountains and lakes and not the same excitement as before crossing borders etc

Sausagenbacon · 01/04/2023 08:51

I've given up after the 1st one, because, unless I'm wrong, the lack of public transport just means that it'll consist of them blagging lifts off people. Plus I find watching Kevin unpleasant, he seems like an unpleasant man.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/04/2023 14:56

Not as interesting as previous series. Loved rob and Jen …. they’ve got twin baby boys now 🥰

Theredjellybean · 01/04/2023 15:02

I also think that hiring a car should not be allowed, it cost them no more than gas and overnight stays that the oterhs spent.
as soon as they said canada was destination i thought ' well with that money why don't they higher a camper van / mobile home thingy and just drive it all the way ....

Theredjellybean · 01/04/2023 15:05

i do like Ladi and monique and see how she super quickly picked up his values which makes me think she was probably a lot nicer than the entitled princess he talks about...feeling they are bigging that up to make it more interesting.
the two brothers..aghhhh...the wimpy wet one needs a kick up the arse .
kevin is unpleasant and spoilt/petulant and i bet sulks at home.
the two doctors are lovely but how did they get 12 weeks off work ?
I looked at applying and you need to be free for filming sept-november this year...not sure my nhs trust would be happy

Theredjellybean · 01/04/2023 15:05

oh and i could not stand Jen from last series...so nasty to poor Rob.

I assume the doctors handed in their notice, safe in the knowledge that they'd be able to walk into a new job immediately on their return.

Pekin express is very similar to the american series called The Amazing race which has been going for years , i think now on its 30th off series.@ForeverbyJudyBlume ..my dd and I are applying for next one, and we reckon it will be Australia ...

Maireas · 01/04/2023 15:12

@QuietlyConfident - I think Zainib will, as she's a psychiatrist, but Mobeen is a surgical registrar and that's notoriously closed. Maybe they've had an arrangement. Anyway, it sounded as if Zainib was a bit fed up and wanted to do a bit of backpacking.

QuietlyConfident · 01/04/2023 15:19

I loved Zainib's description of her family's expectations

  1. get the best grades in school
  2. get the best career: doctor
  3. marry a doctor
  4. have lots of childeen
  5. who will all become doctors

She'd got to step three (fortunately with a really lovely fellow-doctor and thought "Fuck that for a game of soldiers!".

Maireas · 01/04/2023 15:27

Yes, she's probably spent all her formative years and young adulthood studying so this is a break for her. I thought it was great that she went up in the plane, because she was definitely scared.

I used to watch The Amazing Race when we lived in Florida, it was just that - amazing!!

curcurbita · 01/04/2023 21:20

I like this show too though agree the current series is not as good. I think it's mainly that it lacks the cultural diversity/language barrier aspect and Canada is a more developed country. The first series was the most interesting in terms of the variety of route options and diversity of places visited.

Looking at the map of checkpoints for this series (shown at the start) the spacing looks a bit weird - the first 5 cover absolutely huge distances but then 6, 7 and the finish look really close together. Not sure why they'd do it like that? Also a bit concerned they are all going to converge on one ferry again towards the end.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 01/04/2023 21:59

I used to love the amazing race. Haven't seen it on uk tv in years.
@Theredjellybean good luck! I think Africa would be more of a challenge than Australia which would be a bit like Canada in terms of vast distances but no public transport & expensive.

Fleabea · 02/04/2023 02:18

Canada is stunning but I'm not convinced that this series is as good as the previous ones. There is not enough variety in routes (they were all on the same road this week) and they do not have language/currency/border crossings to navigate. It also feels like some of it is staged this series which I haven't felt with previous series. For example, they all seemed to have had the idea to camp to save money this week. I'm sure their tents looked the same just in different colours too...coincidence?

purpleme12 · 02/04/2023 02:21

Well I'm enjoying it still!

Although I do think it was strange how some things weren't explained like the solving of the car breaking down, how the friends got there and I don't believe we found out the exact time difference for all couples at the end either

purpleme12 · 02/04/2023 02:25

And the person who said Mark reminds you of someone but you can't think who.
He reminds me of Mark Wright

KnittingNeedles · 02/04/2023 08:19

I'm interested in what the budget actually covers. In previous series we've seen the contestants negotiating with accommodation owners, or working in return for a bed for the night. There has been very little of that in this series. Yes we were told that Ladi and Monique had camped, but there wasn't much about where the rest stayed - and in Canada you're not finding a bed in a hostel for $2 a night. And food? Never mentioned.

I am interested in this too and how each team decide to approach this. Are they living off pot noodles? Boiling road kill on a camping stove? Dining on moose at a Michelin star restaurant?
