may contain spoilers from seasons 1 & 2

Anyone watch Ted Lasso? I absoloutley love it, and am rewatching it ahead of season 3 coming out later this month.

But aside from me and DH, no one I know watches it!!

I'm hoping we see Nate come back into the fold (Diamond Dogs woof!), and make ammends.

Yep, they could be forgiven for the two blatantly filler episodes in season 2 because Apple ordered two extra after they'd written the scripts, so they had to be shoehorned in. This time they knew it was 10 from the start but just don't seem to have enough material. Which is weird, because there are loads of characters we've hardly got to know - Danny Rojas has had one storyline (killed a dog), Zoreaux has basically had none (being told by Zava to change his name doesn't really count), the hilariously rude Dutchman zero, Colin they are hinting at, Isaac zero. Then there are the pub fans and Mae, Higgins can always do more as well.

Completely agree. They had loads of potential material there, and yet we have boring Keeley with her business no one cares about, and not enough Ted.

thebellagio · 14/04/2023 07:33

@escapingthecity i agree. I listened to the parks and recollection podcast and rob lowe was saying that traditionally on a network sitcom they would have a half hour slot with 2 ad breaks so essentially you had a 22 minute time allowance which needed to have three acts

while writers are now making the most of this freedom, there seems to be something lost in the editing process. This weeks episode was 52 minutes. There’s no need for that. You could literally cut out the entire keeley storyline and lose 15 mins and the episode would have been sharper and stronger.

I’ve also noticed when Brett Goldstein writes the episodes they are much better

BridgetRandomfuck · 17/04/2023 11:21

Yes, this season has been a mess. Ted is doing nothing apart from mooning about Henry - he's clearly going to go back to the States, would be better if he left now! Keely's story is completely uninteresting and the storyline with the boss predictable (as a pp said, they never have a man exploring their bisexual side!). No stories with the team members, though I presume Colin's romance will feature again at some point. A bit disappointed that Rebecca has become the cliched career women sad that she's left children too late - would have been lovely to see a fulfilled older woman who was happy without kids. Even Roy has become a bit of a growling caricature. They may be able to turn it round, but it has been a real disappointment after the first two series.

slamfightbrightlight · 17/04/2023 11:55

I wonder how much Jason Sudekis was distracted by his own divorce/custody problems when filming this series. We haven’t even watched last week’s yet.

Figgygal · 18/04/2023 13:46

Agree with previous comments the main characters have become somewhat caricatures of themselves

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2023 19:42

This weeks is probably the best so far, but still not a patch on the early episodes

Jason Sudekis just looks miserable like he literally doesn't want to be there

It's all been quite odd

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2023 19:56

I was not keen on the diner sequence either

tribpot · 19/04/2023 20:25

I definitely didn't hate this week's episode. It helped that Keeley wasn't in it. More airtime for the players, Higgins and Colin getting some storyline development too. I do always find it rather unbelievable that, when Rebecca starts singing, someone doesn't say 'you know, you should be on Broadway'.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/04/2023 20:56

Absoloutley loved this week's episode.

Really enjoyed this weeks episode! Was a few laugh out loud moments with Jamie and Roy lol

BridgetRandomfuck · 19/04/2023 21:26

This one was definitely a lot more fun! No Keely helped.

vestanesta · 19/04/2023 22:16

Much better. Obviously the best bit was Roy/Jamie. Genuinely lol'd and Jamie is turning into such a top bloke. Phil Dunster is great (and I am reliably informed a good laugh down the pub),

I enjoyed pretty much all the plot strands except Teds tbh. And thank god no keeley

memoriesofamiga · 19/04/2023 22:28

I really enjoyed this episode! It reminded me of the random Beard after dark episode. Agree that it's so much better without Keeley having a big part.

As someone who genuinely can't ride a bike I related so much to Roy 😂 liked the scenes with Trent and Colin too. Ted does seem very removed from it all though.

"We saw a windmill!!!!" 😂

Netaporter · 19/04/2023 23:51

Coach Beard wrote this week’s ep. I really enjoyed it, save for the storylines designed to show the real-life talent of Rebecca and Higgins which seemed a bit jarring. Loved Piggy Stardust 😂 Loved the Roy/Jamie scenes and the Trent/Colin scenes. Outstanding dialogue on ‘friendly matches’ from Roy 🤣

Shame they’ve gone with the Keely/Jack storyline, I wanted to see more Roy/Keeley/Niece scenes which seems a bit unlikely to happen now.

Fancysauce · 20/04/2023 06:00

I hated most of this week's episode. Ted is moping around and the team is still failing, Rebecca fell into a weird romcom with some strange man and that triangle sequence in the diner was just weird.

Some good points like roy and Jamie, higgins and will, Colin and trent. Could have done without the nonsense of the rest of the team trying to decide what to do before ending up with... A pillow fight. I know it links back to previous episodes but still.

Gwdihooooo · 20/04/2023 06:57

I thought this was the best episode by far. Loved it!

Hoping the triangle sequence gets the team winning again!

thebellagio · 20/04/2023 07:43

The irony is that despite being called Ted lasso, they don’t seem to know what to do with Ted Lasso. He’s the most underdeveloped character by far - still exactly the same as in season one whereas all the others have grown and developed.

much better without Keeley. Essentially without her being with Roy or Rebecca she brings the show down (as proved last week).

the writing I thought was beautiful - the scene between Colin and Trent was heartbreaking because you just know that there’s several footballers feeling exactly the same way.

roy and Jamie are the comedy duo the show needs. The comedy timing of riding the bike was flawless.

thebellagio · 20/04/2023 07:44

This series is missing the scenes that humanise Roy - the relationship with his niece and how he would go into her school and his yoga mums were comedy gold. I don’t know why they’ve ditched that

MarciaSaysANumber · 20/04/2023 08:19

This week’s has been the best of the season so far, for me - but other than looking pretty it was pretty poor!

Can’t think of a single original idea shown in the whole hour.

And what a beguiling fantasy interlude they concocted for Rebecca! One of the reviews I saw echoed my own feeling of disappointment that she is only ever portrayed through romance or the potential for romance, or the loss of romance. She’s the boss of a Premier League football team - but apart from her encounter with Zava in the men’s’ loos we almost never see her engaged in actual football business. In addition, if I fell into my local river or canal I guarantee it wouldn’t end with me spending a chaste night in a frankly palatial houseboat with the most attractive man within a hundred thousand mile radius. 🧐

Guess it’s too late to wish they’d try harder …

vestanesta · 20/04/2023 08:27

@MarciaSaysANumber that's interesting re Rebecca. A friend and I were saying how much we enjoyed the Rebecca/Keeley friendship and but other than that she's a bit wasted as a character.

We don't think Trent is going to do the dirty on Colin do we? He's not just pretending? I am still very scared he'll do a tabloid splash

MarciaSaysANumber · 20/04/2023 08:37

Surely the whole direction of the narrative is towards Trent supporting Colin to come out publicly? Probably through a lengthy and heartfelt newspaper article.

(It’s true Rebecca’s friendships are fun, but they still swerve her actual role as the owner of the club. That’s where she should be seen to be consistently active.)

MorrisZapp · 20/04/2023 09:28

I'm an episode behind so we've just endured the Keeley lamb storyline, utterly dreadful. All involved look frankly embarrassed, particularly the actors in Keeley's pretend office.

I think the writers think putting lots of swears in the script counts as wit. It doesn't.

I'll give credit to Rebecca's millionaire blowdries though, and her increasingly powerful dress game. Be great if she actually ran a business.

thebellagio · 20/04/2023 09:30

so whats the bet that Rebecca ends up pregnant by the dutch man?

Him saying "of course we did" after she left, and her going to see the doctor about her fertility can only mean one thing surely?

thebellagio · 20/04/2023 09:34

For me, I think Trent is now the best character by a mile. He comes up with some cracking one liners, is showing support to various characters and is actively driving the narrative of the story (such as him/Colin)

Here are my predictions for the rest of the series...

I think the series will end with Ted going home to America to be with his son, and potentially taking Coach Beard with him, with Roy becoming full time manager. After Trent came up with some footballing suggestion last week, It wouldn't even shock me if Trent ended up Roy's assistant - no stranger than Nate being the West Ham manager haha

Rebecca will end up with a family. Rupert will split up from new Rebecca.
Trent will help Colin to publicly come out with his partner.

There will be some form of redemption between Nate and Ted.

And somehow Roy and Keeley will get back together.

tribpot · 20/04/2023 09:42

I definitely don't think Trent will do the dirty on Colin - much more likely to be supportive. And that storyline would also give Keeley something useful to do, in managing the publicity for Colin.

Surely Rebecca isn't going to end up pregnant from blackout sex - I think more likely the Dutchman is going to supply her wish for a family with his daughter. Totally agree that it would be good to see her do something related to the actual business of football, or anything apart from moon about in romance/baby dramas.
