Picard. Series 3
species5618 · 21/02/2023 20:52
Picard. Series 3. First ep now on Amazon Prime and it's actually not bad (but give it time)
SirSamVimesCityWatch · 21/02/2023 20:55
I watched series 1 with increasing rage, frustration and sorrow for what it had done to Roddenberry's hopeful vision. Didn't watch series 2 because of the shit show that was series 2. But am hearing better things about S3 and I would enjoy seeing Word and LaForge again. Do I have to suffer through S2 for S3 to make sense?
IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 21/02/2023 21:16
I was sad about series 1 and 2 as well, but don't think you need to watch them to understand series 3 thus far!
Soscrewed · 21/02/2023 21:25
Season 1 and 2 were awful- so dark. Season 3 episode 1- similarly dark, but with more of the old gang so the possibility of improvement.
TNG was a hopeful and bright future, a place you wanted to live. This is not. Does no one get a happy ending anymore?!? I hope it improves.
Side note, I've really enjoyed the Orville on Disney for exactly this reason, a future you'd want to be here for. It starts off a little goofy, but stick with the first few episodes. The most star trek like show produced in years.
SoupDragon · 23/02/2023 08:11
I enjoyed both the first 2 series.
not as good as TNG or Voyager but still enjoyed them.
Stepuptowardsinfinity · 23/02/2023 08:17
Series 1 wasn't great but I surprised myself by loving series 2. I'm a massive STNG fan so really glad to see some old faces back for series 3 and the opener was promising. I've grown to like Raffi and Seven alot too so interested to see where this one takes them.
westcountryfaithful · 23/02/2023 08:26
I thought s1 was ok but s2 was dreadful. Also kept thinking that Patrick Stewart was too old for this and was going to drop off his perch. I’m in conflict about s3 - hear good things but surely he shouldn’t be making another series?!
Bard6817 · 23/02/2023 08:28
I was a huge Trekkie.
Picard s1 - i grin and bore it - but it wasn’t Star Trek. No morality tale, no crisis of conscience, just the usual ‘messaging’.
s2 - i only watched about 3 episodes, and stopped…. No desire to go back. Again, barely Star Trek.
s3 - very different. Yes darker. Using Star Trek music was different and makes it feel better. It’s only 1 episode in, but Picard is respected more within it, the federation is not running on ‘feelings’ but an organised structure as it would be. Just feels far more like Star Trek. early days though but giving it a chance.

So glad to find a thread!
Am also a lifetime Trekkie (with a particular love for DS9). It’s odd, the first two seasons of Picard were largely rubbish - I only watched them out of loyalty. But I missed that weekly immersion when they weren’t on.
This one, so far, is much better. Cute climax to Ep1!
SavBlancTonight · 24/02/2023 12:23
Just watched Episode 2 and realised I needed to find other Trekkies.
For me, it wasn't that season 1 or 2 were bad, it was that they completely forgot how Star Trek works - I mean, in the old TNG, the whole of season 2 could have been easily compressed into a truly fantastic 2-part episode! The single over riding story arc without any individual sub stories irritated me.
I think it's going to irritate me about season 3 too, but possibly slightly less. Not sure why.
It's why I quite enjoyed Strange New Worlds or whatever it was called - individual stories and episodes with an overarching narrative.
CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 24/02/2023 18:58
Ahh … That was rather excellent. Flagged a bit in the middle but a stirring ending. Next Generation was never my favourite era but it is nice, here, to see him striding about a ship being masterly, rather than doddering about on land looking vaguely impotent.
Rather fabulous antagonist, too. But I don’t want to spoil for those yet to watch!
SavBlancTonight · 24/02/2023 22:27
"Belay that! Admiral's orders". Possibly the best line, and delivery, he's had at any point since Picard started!
Artisticpaint · 24/02/2023 22:35
I really enjoyed series 2, and series three episode 1 was great ,I’m looking forward ton next weeks episode
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2023 07:23
Hated series 1, boring as hell, felt more like a Radio 4 arts program than Star Trek Series 2 was only slightly better.
Started watching S3 and I'm really enjoying it. Actually feels like proper Star Trek with decent story lines and action. Can't wait until next week's 'exciting episide' 😁
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2023 07:33
Apoligies - I failed to put a full stop between Star Trek and Series 2 in the first paragraph.
MsMarch · 25/02/2023 23:01
I have been scrolling pictures. What has Beverly done to her face though? I thought it was just the "I'm barely alive" moment from episode 2 but in various photos it's the same.
It's annoying. Hoping it doesn't bother me as I enjoy the rest of the season. Am considering rewatching episode 2!
species5618 · 28/02/2023 20:49
@SavBlancTonight Surely the best line was "Shut up Wesley"
Soscrewed · 28/02/2023 21:22
@SavBlancTonight yes!!! The lack of individual episodes. Where you could watch one week having missed the last two and things would still make sense (bar the odd two parter). There were parts of season's 1 and 2 that made no sense even though I was watching them all.
Also- why does Jack Crusher have an English accent? It's not genetic. And will said "can't you see what I see"- no no, other than the English accent they don't appear very alike.
And why have Deanna and Will fallen out? Isn't it enough their child died? And WTF with the graphic drugs and violence. TNG (and the others) were family shows.
Sigh... I have to watch put of loyalty, but this is not the happy ending they all should have had.
Stellaris22 · 28/02/2023 21:26
It's all about Lower Decks anyway, far superior to Picard!
SlightlySusan · 28/02/2023 21:57
Not watched this yet but want to follow along with the discussion once I start watching it.
I'm a huge voyager fan and very much enjoy the rest. I also loved discovery which I haven't finished yet as don't pay for paramount.
I've actually only just finished watching series 2 of Picard because it took me so long to get into. It's like they knew it could be legendary but missed the boat by a mile. Series 2 got better as I watched so definitely hoping for better from season 3.

Ok, that's sorted it for me, not watching!
Soscrewed · 28/02/2023 22:26
@SirSamVimesCityWatch oh no! I didn't meant to put you off. I'll watch but I shall delete everything that happens from my own ideas of what happens after the series finished.

I'm actually okay with lots of these issues, notwithstanding my irritation re the lack of individual episodes:
- The accent: I ASSUME that's going to be explained at some point in terms of where he grew up and the reason for Beverly having cut everyone off. I mean, quite obviously she got pregnant and then promptly ditched the lot of them for some reason. (although really, my question is "I know it's the 24th century or whatever but Beverly and Picard had a baby when they were what? 60?)
- Will and Deanna is definitely going to be explained - it's clearly part of a bigger story and I've seen it referenced in a trailer so it's another over arching story line that they're currently just teasing us about. So irritating from the perspective of no stand alone episodes but they've always been quite volatile! And clearly the dead kid would have made things even more complicated!
- The drug thing isn't that weird. Season 1 had a whole thing about Raffi being an addict and how that impacted her. And I think in the original TNG there were definitely the odd dodgy world. It was just a different time though so we kept it all light and they didn't make it so obvious. I was more surprised by Worf beheading the Ferengi!!!
Figgygal · 01/03/2023 09:26
I enjoyed season 3 so far was obvious what the revelation was going to be but the actor is far too old to be early 20's.
It feels like a total reboot post that ghastly 2nd season I wish they'd taken Raffi with them she just doesn't fit in the show for me
FoxFeatures · 01/03/2023 09:30
I watch Picard because of duty to the Captain, I watch SNW and Disco season 2) purely for Anson Mount
