Picard. Series 3. First ep now on Amazon Prime and it's actually not bad (but give it time)

Yeah this last episode left me completely cold. I was seriously considering paying for paramount to try Strange New Worlds but I don’t want further disappointment.

I really like Strange New Worlds. It has the feel of the original series.

I thought her nasal bridge ridges were much less defined to the extent that I was really confused about whether it was a plot point.

I just assumed age.

Geordi and Worf have both aged exceptionally well though 😂 Picard looks virtually unchanged too

WolfFoxHare · 03/04/2023 08:34

I first watched TNG when I was a child and Picard seemed ancient to me (probably because he was mostly bald) so I was really shocked to realise he was only 47 when it started!

Brava, @Wanderingowl!

I adore Vadic.

She's creepy, believable and has presence.

Also, she's a battered middle-aged woman doing something interesting on screen.

When was the last time we saw that?

8misskitty8 · 03/04/2023 08:59

Vadic telling Beverly that Jack wasn’t for her (or something to that effect) makes me still think it’s something to do with the pah wraiths or possibly the prophets.
We know from ds9 that a prophet possessed Sisko’s mum to ensure he was born.

just found this thread.

Season 1 for me was meh - Ok. Season 2 much better, but S3 is "must watch"

I'm loving it. every nostalgic minute and reference. I first watched TNG while breastfeeding a crotchety DC1, escaped into Voyager after DC were in bed... these characters were such an escape for me, into a much more interesting world than the one I was in.

I thought the changling woman's speech about what was done to her by the Federation - that bastion of freedom and "non interference" - was incredibly powerful. Hope Joe Biden was watching.

It feel like they are wrapping up something important to me and I really want to know how it all turns out.

Snuck a peek at the reviews for Ep 8 - it looks horribly exciting. But can I really spend a sunny bank holiday morning watching streamed TV? …

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/04/2023 12:34

Just watched episode 8. Best of the series yet 👍.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 07/04/2023 14:47

Yup - that was a wee bit exciting. (In familiar, old school ways.)

Sill ending though.

Hoping one of you fellow geeks will be able to answer this. Geordi is a commodore - is this a higher or lower rank than admiral?

Above captain but below fleet admiral. Commodore usually in charge of a group of ships.

helpfulperson · 07/04/2023 20:38

I knew I was asking the right people :-)

burnoutbabe · 07/04/2023 22:17

I am watching it with my star trek loving partner.

I mostly enjoyed this weeks as STUFF HAPPENED!

Are raffi and 7 still a couple? They haven't been in same ship all season.

And does everyone know that Picard is jacks dad? (Bar ryker) as no one seemed to say YOU SLY DOG!! to him. Or even congratulate him.

Hoping for janeaway in last 2 episodes or will Wheaton

burnoutbabe · 07/04/2023 22:18

Oh and we had an f bomb!! Is that the first in Picard?

It's lower than an admiral. It's pretty much the lowest rank that an officer with command of numerous ships will have. Geordi as head of the fleet museum probably has commodore rank as he is in charge of all of those ships. So in some ways his rank may be more honourary than practical as the ships he has command over are all decommissioned. So he doesn't have authority over their captains, as they don't have captains.*

*For now, I'd lay good odds that the final battle will involve everyone in the main cast flying their own old ship to save the day. And they'll all choose ones special to them, like Seven in Voyager, Worf in the bird of prey. Jack in the OG Enterprise. Picard, as a super surprise, in the recovered Enterprise D, etc.

This week's episode is amazing
Bloody had hairs stood up on ends
Took me right back to childhood watching TNG

Completely agree - brilliant. I need to watch it again because I was constantly in a state of 'omigodthatwasamazing'.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 14/04/2023 16:06

Ha! Pretty much everything as we predicted. Took a long time to get there.

Dunno though - was all a bit portentous today.

Also, if a shop can be controlled by half a dozen people - why were they always manned by hundreds???

But I know we have to treasure this. I missed even the dreadful S1 and S2 - I’ll be bereft when this is over.

chocolateisavegetable · 14/04/2023 20:23

OMG OMG OMG! Utterly awesome. I’ve been a Trekkie my whole adult life (TNG onwards) so I make no apologies for loving the nostalgia

catsrus · 14/04/2023 21:27

bloody brilliant - for an hour I was properly transported back in time. Sigh. I grew up with TOS - but Enterprise D and its crew are the definitive ST for me.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/04/2023 21:37

If you’re off on a “five year mission to seek out new worlds and new civilisations” etc you’re gonna need a lot more than just the skeleton crew you’re taking on a brief mission to defeat the bad guys and save the world. You’ll need at least three full bridge crews to cover downtime and shore leave for a start, and that’s before you start on the scientists, medical staff, diplomats for first contact, full engineering crew, and of the course, the families of all on board.

I spend waaaaaay to much time thinking about this stuff.

CommanderSeven · 14/04/2023 22:56

Spoilers ahead...

OH MY GOD. I'M IN HEAVEN. MY SHIP. MY SHIP.

It's the best thing ever it's been worth the wait.

I've loved JLP since I was 12.

Also did you see the Easter egg of all the other ship names? Thunderchild. How freaking cool.

Geordi warned Starfleet not to link the fleet. He saw the risk.

I am a bit confused about why they didn't, at the moment when Borg influence was revealed, go "oh well we'd better get in touch with that gang of Borg who allied with us and have a friend of ours as their local hive queen to see what they know about this"

Obvs this may be in the plan for future episodes but it's a bit odd that no one seems to have anything to say about their borg dealings from only less than a year previously.
