Picard. Series 3. First ep now on Amazon Prime and it's actually not bad (but give it time)

OP posts:

Enjoyed ep4 as well.
Never seen quite so much product placement on an episode of Star Trek though.
Anyone for a Jamesons? Don't worry we'll show you the bottle 42 times just in case...

I laughed at this too. I also enjoyed how it was referred to as "the cheaper the better". Wondered if that was the Star Trek franchise doing their best to distance themselves from the embarrassment!

I wouldn’t have recognised Beverley. Not sure if she’s had Botox or if it’s just the hair colour but I keep thinking she’s Deanna!

I’m not keen on the 10 episode arcs either - or Raffi. I’ll have Picard on in the background but I’m
bot really into it. I really want to see SNW but can’t justify paying for yet another streaming service - we have Netflix, Prime, Disney and NowTV already! We got bored of Discovery in the middle of season 3. Lower Decks is the best really.

I'm the same with Beverley. She does look like Deanna.

merlotlover · 11/03/2023 22:04

I watched series one and two out of my love for tng. I'm so glad I stuck with it as series three is ace. Raffi does my head in thou 😬. Using the beautiful music from first contact was lovely. Like captain shaw even thou he's a bit of a dick 😆

Frezia · 12/03/2023 00:10

I'm a big Star Trek fan, namely TNG and I enjoyed Voyager too. Watched season 1 and 2 of Picard, I agree they weren't very good outside of seeing the original characters. Q was great though and salvaged season 2 for me.

I'm 2 episodes into season 3 and am struggling to stay interested. I'll continue watching out of duty to the Captain but the writing feels lazy, like a fanfic made into series. Like a focus group was made of TNG fans who were asked what they wanted for the Picard character; "it's sad he never fathered a child" "got it, we'll give him a son"
I really hope they don't go down the romance route with Dr Crusher although I can see it coming..
And way too much screen time for Raffi who is exhausting to watch.

But I am enjoying the Riker - Picard dynamics.

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/03/2023 00:35

Series 1 - ok
Series 2 - loved it
Series - just brilliant

Don't let series 1 put you off. Persevere.

beguilingeyes · 12/03/2023 06:30

I'm losing interest. I can't bear Raffi. At least they got rid of that really annoying blonde woman.
I only really liked the first series of Discovery. I'm liking Strange New Worlds though. This may be because my Star Trek is the original series #oldperson.
We went to see George Takei's musical recently and it was lovely to see him.

WolfFoxHare · 12/03/2023 11:59

Yeah, I have absolutely zero interest in Raffi. Complete waste of screen time in my opinion. I just mentally switch off for her scenes. I also wasn’t fond of Agnes(?) so I’m glad she borged off.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/03/2023 17:24

I think that's been the problem. I don't like most of the characters.

Same with Discovery. Michael is just so unlikeable as the lead. The crew didn't gel at all for me. Even her own mum didn't seem arsed about her. Then all the gender ideology nonsense thrown in. I gave up.

Might watch season 3 if it's mostly the original TNG crew.

Started re watching Voyager last week as it started from the beginning on sci-fi channel. Happy days.

The shape shifters were all golden. Even the whole 'sea' of them in liquid form on Odo's home planet.

helpfulperson · 12/03/2023 17:28

I saw a fan theory online that that is in fact Thomas Riker not Will. I did think that might explain some of the clunkyness.

SavBlancTonight · 12/03/2023 20:15

I was never able to get into DS9. I wonder if I should persevere. I got to about episode 6 of season 1. But never really felt anything. I think I'mg going to give it another bash.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 12/03/2023 20:27

Ds9 is really really good once it gets going. It gets properly good about the time Sisko goes bald, if I recall correctly! And gets another big uplift when Worf joins.

And any Garak heavy episodes are absolutely marvelous.

Weirdly that was around the same time I started to find him attractive. All it took was for his hair to move from his head to his chin.😄
I love Quark and Odo and the beautiful Julian. Never took to Keira. Gutted when Jadzia went.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 12/03/2023 21:01

DS9 is my Star Trek - even though I’ve watched since the very first iteration. I read a brilliant analysis recently of why it proved less popular than some others when it began - essentially because it was the first to deal with issues that had previously been skated over.

I adored it. I adored Odo. And Garak was just … effing Shakespearean - of course. It really was another level of drama.

I could never grasp NG and sometimes wondered if it was some sort of parody. Someone would learn that their entire planet, including their partner and children, had just been expunged from the universe; their lip would tremble a little - and Deanna Troi would peer at them across the bridge and intone “I sense you are feeling some strong emotion.” It was balderdash!

Really liked the team around Michael in Discovery - it was just that her own back story was massively overly complicated, to the point where she became unbelievable. But I loved the big story!

WolfFoxHare · 12/03/2023 21:15

I’d much have preferred it if Michael hadn’t been Spock’s mysteriously never before mentioned or alluded to sister. Why couldn’t she just have been a completely original character?

Also Discovery never really recovered for me when Jason Isaacs was killed off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/03/2023 21:37

I never really got into DS 9. I might try it again.

Riker is being far too bumbling Granddad in Picard so far.

Agreed that the Michael being Spock's sister was ridiculous.

SavBlancTonight · 13/03/2023 09:33

I quite liked the Spock sister element of Michael on the basis that it created an extra layer to Spock. So once they all disappeared off, they became the biggest secret and were all basically just removed from all references etc. But it did annoy me in the beginning.

Re DS9 - If I've watched a few episodes and didn't get into it, should I just skip to season 2 or something for the good bits or do I have to force myself to stay in touch so I get all the back story?

WolfFoxHare · 13/03/2023 14:32

@SavBlancTonight ah ok. I don’t think we watched it for long enough for us to work out that they’d disappeared from the traditional timeline forever and that’s why Spock didn’t mention her.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 13/03/2023 19:57

@SavBlancTonight I don’t remember DS9 in much detail now - but it was quite … subtle, so there might be clever little references to things that happened before. And relationships, power balances, loyalties evolved over time. For which reasons you might very well miss a good deal of subtext if you just dipped in and out.

(I remember deciding to be completely uninterested in Mad Men when it was first on. Caught one random episode at someone else’s house - and couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. Then over the first lockdown I binged the entire oeuvre in its proper order. I still think if it with wonder.)

Season 1 and 2 were awful- so dark. Season 3 episode 1- similarly dark, but with more of the old gang so the possibility of improvement.

TNG was a hopeful and bright future, a place you wanted to live. This is not. Does no one get a happy ending anymore?!? I hope it improves.

Side note, I've really enjoyed the Orville on Disney for exactly this reason, a future you'd want to be here for. It starts off a little goofy, but stick with the first few episodes. The most star trek like show produced in years.

So is that where the Orville went. Brilliant series, but we dont get Disney.

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 13/03/2023 21:17

Thank you for the denofgeek link. Interesting read.

I used to read the official Trek fiction and there is a book about the connected relationship between Deanna and Riker called Imzadi. Might need to rescue that out of the loft!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 13/03/2023 21:19

I'm watching The Orville! First episode. The doctor is Cassidy Yates, from DS9! This makes me happy.

Still not watching Picard.

8misskitty8 · 18/03/2023 08:25

Liking it so far.
But the whole changeling bucket search was stupid. Changelings don’t need a bucket. Odo wasn’t found with a bucket. He made the choice to use one when he was regenerating
. Other changelings didn’t use them and indeed Odo also used different things to regenerate into. Including a held up skirt !

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/03/2023 09:21

It's almost as though the writers never bothered watching any star trek back catalogue... 🤔

They also had the whole, 'how did a changeling get on the titan, we scan all crew members' completely ignoring that a changeling can look like anything. A shoe, a glass, a phaser, anything at all, could be a changeling.

CommanderSeven · 18/03/2023 11:28

Has everyone watched the latest episode yet? I wanna talk about it with people who understand.

What's going on with JC?
