Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

Google tells me there are a total of 2915 episodes of Brookside. If STV drop 10 a week, it will take 5 and a half years to get through the lot!

Just noticed in one scene the Corrie music playing from the TV in the Grants house!!

Bellagio40 · 11/02/2023 01:10

Just watched the first two episodes. So happy it’s on. I used to love watching the omnibus at 5pm on Saturdays while I was getting ready to go out and I always fancied Barry Grant 😍

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2023 07:40

The drinks Bobby was serving at his NYE party were in thimbles!

When did wine glasses get so much bigger?

Awumminnscotland · 12/02/2023 09:38

Yes the glasses were tiny! I think wine glasses got bigger in the late 80s/90s when it became more acceptable for women to go out together and buy wine. Until recently I had mg mums wine glasses bought with vouchers from the esso garage😆! We only used the larger ones which were meant to be water goblets because the wine ones need filling too much!

Helendegenerate · 12/02/2023 11:34

Pacing myself so only on ep 6 but had forgotten how much swearing they did! 😏 I think it was the only soap which had that and even today afaik they don't do it.

windyarse · 12/02/2023 11:54

What strikes me is how 'real' the characters are, understated and relatable unlike any soap characters we see today.

Sue Johnston is divine.

hiredandsqueak · 12/02/2023 12:07

Loving it and enjoying looking at the home decor and remisniscing which family and friends had the same furnishings back then.

prampushingdownthehighst · 12/02/2023 15:30

Very much enjoying this, reliving my teenage years and massive crush on Barry Grant
But how boring are Pet and Gavin, I couldn't remember them.at all and think it must be because they just moan on

Back21970 · 12/02/2023 15:39

Just started this week and on episode 4, watched it first time around but not till about 1985, so missed the very early years.

Takes me right back to 1982 when I was 17!

Love the warning that comes up at the beginning of each episode saying it reflects language and attitudes of the time 😂

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/02/2023 15:51

FFS @Redglitter this is now five and a half years of my viewing life taken up with watching the reruns.

thanks for the thread. I'm going to binge watch some episodes then come back if that’s ok?

the house doesn’t really need cleaning anyway

Lorry10 · 12/02/2023 15:57

I found myself hooked on some You Tube back episodes of Brookie on the famly incest story of Nat and Georgia - anyone remember that one ?

I don't remember them either - obviously because they are easily forgotten!

NCTDN · 12/02/2023 17:22

The brother and sister relationship fascinated me!

rc22 · 12/02/2023 17:33

I was only 5 in 1982 so didn't watch it. I got into Brookside when I was about 14. I'm loving Barry and like PPs I am developing a massive crush on him!!
I find Paul and his daughter Lucy really obnoxious and unpleasantly snobby. I don't like Heather and her husband either.
It seems really different to other soaps in that they follow the characters at home, school and work and there are none of the classic soap meeting places like pubs, cafes or corner shops. That had changed by the time I watched it as there was a bar where the characters met and interacted.

Agree about Pet and Gavin. The actor who plays Gavin has been in loads of stuff since. Always gave me the creeps because I probably associated him with this dull, slightly dodgy Brookie character.

VanillaImpulse · 12/02/2023 23:54

Made me laugh seeing the restaurant that Barry took Karen to: Rooneys! 😂
Love the brother/sister relationship. Barry is lovely in this but I never really liked him when I started watching it around 91 (when Sue fell off the shopping parade roof).

Cheshiresun · 13/02/2023 00:33

I'm loving it, seen all the episodes so far!

Cheshiresun · 13/02/2023 00:34

Message didn't all post! I did watch Brookie late 90's plus but these early episodes are new to me.

Some of the adults in it look so old, guess it's the fashions of the day that don't help! Paul, for example, I thought he was already retirement age.

Interesting story with Heather and her dress, I like her! And the party - I wonder if anything will come of that! Have read around the characters but don't want to read too much into what happens :)

No mobile phones - that's the most noticeable thing. Cars where they have to open the passenger door from the inside, car alarm turned off on the outside.
Yes and no central heating in brand new homes!

torquewench · 13/02/2023 08:05

Im looking forward to seeing the Magic Rabbits making an appearance 😁

x2boys · 13/02/2023 08:32

I was gob,smacked when Paul.said he was 55 I would have put him.at 65 at least!
the actress who.played Annabel, was only 48,when those scenes were filmed! Those fashions definitely aged them!

They do look old, the beige trousers and cardigan on Paul and Annabel's quilted bolero jacket and matching skirt loved so much by my primary school teachers, it really is a step back in time, so nostalgic.

VanillaImpulse · 13/02/2023 09:09

All the clips round the ear would definitely be frowned upon these days as well as the racist stuff at the workplace. I'm glad they've not edited it as it's good to see how times have changed

bigTillyMint · 13/02/2023 16:57

People dressed and looked so much older, even in the 80s. My mum wore stuff like Annabels (and worse, the queen - she was the original Hyacinth Bouquet) and would have been the same age. They dressed like their mothers from 18.

NCTDN · 14/02/2023 08:45

My mum had a dress just like the one Sheila wore for new years eve. I thought it was the bees knees!!
