Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

Only one more episode to watch, wish they would release more than 5 per week.

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 17/02/2023 20:11

Yes - Karen and the landline. My family didn’t have one until 1985. It was expensive as you had to pay for the initial installation of the line.

VanillaImpulse · 18/02/2023 00:22

I couldn't believe all the footballers having a bath together after the match! Did that really happen? Does it still happen now?!?!

Yes they did 😂

You used to see photos of them after matches.

Where are the next 5 episodes? They haven't downloaded or have I done something wrong?

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 23/02/2023 09:13

@Wilberforce42 I am watching on my tv and they were all on there?

Wilberforce42 · 23/02/2023 09:55

Hmmm my tv is only showing the first 25 still

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 23/02/2023 10:34

@Wilberforce42 annoying - wasn’t there a log in or something for the app? Maybe try that again and it might update?

VanillaImpulse · 23/02/2023 22:32

I've got all 30 on mine.

I was looking at some of the cast to see what they are doing now. Sad that 3 out of 4 of the Collins family are no longer alive. Lucy died really young.

Wilberforce42 · 24/02/2023 09:21

Found them!

bigTillyMint · 25/02/2023 14:59

I don’t remember the storyline about Gavin at all 😲

Neither do I.

torquewench · 25/02/2023 18:27

Nor me. I remember Petra and her gobby sister and Free George Jackson. Gav storyline? Nope.

I used to work in the building where Gav dropped Petra off for work - it was Norwich Union's office at the time of filming and her backstop was that she worked for an insurance company.

Back21970 · 26/02/2023 11:26

Just watched the Gavin episode (don’t want to spoil it for anyone still to catch up) but bit of a shocker, didn’t see that coming at all.

Paul and Annabelle in bed was more than I really wanted to see, to be honest, I can imagine if I’d watched it at the time with my parents (I was 17 in 1983) I’d have been mortified 😂

bigTillyMint · 26/02/2023 11:29

@Back21970 I had a good laugh at that scene, especially after that kid had called him senile and he’s only meant to be 55 🤣

@torquewench, I immediately recognised Petra’s BIL, but had forgotten that storyline!

I was annoyed with myself for reading the descriptions ahead and they do have spoilers including that one so I don't recommend! Would never have expected it otherwise. Was surprised how much was shown too.

Since watching this I am now on the search for a teapot 🫖 Sheila always seems to have one on the go and it would be quite nice to have lots rather than a cup with a teabag at a time!

NCTDN · 26/02/2023 19:34

I was going to ask that - did everybody in the 80s use a teapot?

bigTillyMint · 26/02/2023 19:45

We definitely had one at home!

VanillaImpulse · 26/02/2023 20:28

My parents always had one and still do! Always thought of it as old fashioned but actually it would be quite good instead of boiling the kettle all the time Grin

bigTillyMint · 26/02/2023 21:25

We have one! DH loves to get it out.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/02/2023 21:51

Danny Webb (who played Gavin) has just popped up tonight in The Gold. He's been in all sorts.

I also think I've hit that age where I feel I need to start using a teapot!

MrsDrDear · 26/02/2023 22:15

Just watched an episode where Sheila is ironing a bath towel, madness.

Loving the nostalgia. Roger is a right PITA though.

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 26/02/2023 23:17

@NCTDN yes to the teapot and the expression ‘there’s tea in the pot’.

It’s very bitter sweet to me watching this. I was 10 at the time, living over the water and remember how bleak this era in the north west was. I remember houses without heating and the casual violence to kids. how many times was Damon whacked around the head? And Karen dragged in ‘ger in ‘ere’ is another phrase I remember. And the complete loss of hope and lack of aspiration. The unemployment was terrible and, just like Damon, kids commonly said, ‘there’s no jobs anyway’.

VanillaImpulse · 26/02/2023 23:20

Just realised that the girl at school is Kathy Bates from Emmerdale. Was trying to figure out where I'd seen her before! Thought it was Anthea Turner at first!!

Back21970 · 27/02/2023 03:14

I spotted Emmerdale’s Kathy too - yes she did look a bit like Anthea Turner.

Karen’s biker ex was in Corrie years back, Garry Mallett and was married to Judy played by Gaynor Faye who went on to be In Emmerdale.

The soaps are a small world!
