I also found it a bit odd that when Catherine was first informed of Ann Gallagher's kidnap she didn't immediately think of the scene of gaffer tape and knickers and blood she'd found in the cellar of the terraced house where she believed TLR had been living. It took Claire to prompt her into thinking that TLR could be involved in whatever had happened to Ann. I always thought that the second Catherine was informed of the kidnapping she would have thought about what she'd discovered in that cellar. She even told Claire not to jump to conclusions.

Having said all that, I still think the first series is the best.

We know TLR is a rapist because of Ann but I don’t think we KNOW that he raped Becky. She was obviously hanging around with him and doing drugs with him. Just not convinced that she was definitely raped by him. It is Catherine’s way of dealing with the fact that she had a child by TLR? To believe she was raped because her Becky would not have willingly had sex with TLR (but I think it is possible she did - she was hanging round with him and - I know this is awful to say - but he is v good looking). I also think I believed him when he said he loved Becky. How would any mother then get her head round the fact that her daughter willingly had sex with someone who is so vile - but of course, it does happen.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2023 12:38

Tommy always said he didn’t rape becky

that he loved her

Becky wrote a name but doesn’t mean they was the baby’s father if that’s what Catherine is going on via rape

so def sounds like no dna was done

so he might not be dad …. As I said in thread 1

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2023 12:39

Also have said we need a s4 but that’s it’s before 123

sonwe see Becky alive , her and Tommys relationship and if he raped her

EsmaCannonball · 21/01/2023 12:39

In the first series Catherine said that the rape wasn't a matter of 'he said, she said' but was 'brutal'. She must have a basis for saying that. I'd find it disappointingly anti-women if Catherine's hatred of TLR was based on Becky lying or Catherine jumping to unjust conclusions. I don't like the thought of any kind of sympathy generation for TLR.

storminabuttercup · 21/01/2023 12:44

I've said it before but there is no way it will turn out that TLR didn't rape Becky, it would undermine the whole story and be massively inappropriate

Poke · 21/01/2023 12:46

Place marking. Thank you to the thread-setter upper.

HannaHat · 21/01/2023 12:48

Agree with pp's, very inappropriate if it turned out he didn't rape Becky.

This.

My prediction for this week is that TLR will escape from court/outside court with the help of the Kinesvic’s. He will take Ryan with him and the next couple of episodes will be about finding Ryan.

RandomersAssociation · 21/01/2023 13:03

Is there anyone in the country who doesn’t think that’s what’s coming, @Poke ?Grin

Presumably Claire, as she doesn't see the harm in Ryan connecting with his psycho father, as said father is never getting out of prison. 😄

Bloody Claire!

UrsulaPandress · 21/01/2023 13:23

Signing in.

Not saying we’re right - but that’s what we’re being directed to expect.

I daresay they’ll manage a twist or two to subvert our legitimate expectations.

@Tulipp - I agree about why on earth Catherine would let Ryan walk home when TLR was still free but I do think it plausible that a psychopath would kill Lewis.

do we only have Catherine’s word that Becky was raped by TLR? Is it possible that the sex was consensual but that Becky knew Catherine would go mad with her. She was obviously going through a difficult period. Does series 2 give info on why Daniel split from his wife?

He cheated on his wife. And also he clearly had never been very happy in his marriage. Not an excuse, bad behaviour in any event.

Good looking men are capable of rape. Women who have consensual sex can then also be raped by that same person. As for TLR saying he loved Becky, doesn't mean he wasn't violent towards her.

I don't understand all the obsession with wanting to actually see whether TLR raped Becky or not. It's good enough for me to know that Catherine believed Becky was in an abusive relationship and Becky told her that TLR has raped her. I know we are all unpicking every little detail about Happy Valley but the Becky back story should be taken at face value. To want TLR to be innocent of raping Becky and some misunderstood Romeo figure makes a mockery of everything. TLR is a manipulative monster and posters trying to see a loving side to him shows exactly how manipulative he is and the, quite frankly, genius writing from SW and excellent acting from James Norton.

Totally agree with this: I was scrolling to the end to make a similar point. Becky might have liked TLR and enjoyed spending time with him, much to the horror of her mother, but none of that means he didn’t also brutally rape her. We’ve also seen plenty of evidence that he is capable of vehemently denying crimes we have seen him commit.

The letting Ryan walk home by himself plot hole is like the prison letters/visiting one in this. So staggeringly unlikely, and clearly done entirely for plot development, that I have to determinedly NOT think about it! As for Catherine being slow in series 1, DH and I were actually laughing at how dim she was about joining the dots, but I also wonder whether it might be more realistic than the usual lightning-fast detective trope? Still stood out in a drama though.

PrincessScarlett · 21/01/2023 15:34

I wonder if poor Ann is going to come face to face with TLR in her police officer capacity when he inevitably escapes? There's been a lot of focus on her struggling with what happened to her.

Yes and equally dim Neil who seems to think it will be a lovely enriching experience for a 16yr old to go to court for a day out to view his alleged father pleading guilty to his part in a gangland murder. What could possibly go wrong.

legofrostqueen · 21/01/2023 15:50

Been binge-watching series 1 & 2 to remind myself of the stories to date, lots of details I'd forgotten so recommend this! Loving the scenes of the beautiful countryside in the Calder valley too (local-ish to me & just as stunning in real life - unfortunately the deprivation etc are real too)...

Pl242 · 21/01/2023 15:57

Yes agree re Ann and TLR meeting in. Some capacity before series is out. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Netaporter · 21/01/2023 16:06

Checking in, one more sleep!

Thank you for the new thread @alchemies

Currently binge watching ‘Riches’ on Itvx to make the time pass 😂 it’s completely Vacuous shite, not even a Poundland Succession. I Love it.

How’s the leg, @Blondeshavemorefun ?

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2023 16:23

I don't understand all the obsession with wanting to actually see whether TLR raped Becky or not.
It would mean that wasn't the reason she killed herself though.
