Absolutely she should be a Dame. If you haven’t watched her HBO portrayal of Julia Childs watch it. It was one of the best things in TV in years.

I've got it recording so I can binge watch it! Great casting, so glad she's had a US breakthrough.

OMG I temporarily forgot she was Julia! That's how great she is.

I saw her in Hebden a few times whilst I was actually watching Julia, and really wanted to say how fab I thought it was (but didn't)

heartbeatt · 01/01/2023 22:50

Sarah Lancashire is my absolute girl crush. She's fucking amazing.

Waiting seven years for season three was totally worth it. SW's writing was bang on from start to finish.

I don't think it's Clare and Neil; that's too obvious. More likely Nevison or Ann.

madroid1 · 01/01/2023 22:50

Quite a contrast to call the midwife😁Also forgot how grippingly gritty it is. Need to wind down now.

Anyone else concerned about the daughter that won’t take her jacket off? What’s going on there

Yes! And she is suspiciously quiet and docile... I wondered if the mum has been drugging her to keep her quiet, maybe the dad is abusive to the kids too if they play up or make a noise?

Clawdy · 01/01/2023 23:00

Hope the nasty teacher comes to a sticky end.

Excellent episode. Only thing I didn’t think was realistic was how controlling the abusive teacher was in front of Catherine. He would be far more subtle in front of a police officer.

Another one voting for Claire & Neil taking Ryan.

I don’t agree I am afraid. I have found that abusive people often use the people around them to justify their abuse and to support it. They love nothing more than getting others on side against their target.

7 years!!!! Gosh I don't feel so bad about not remembering the plot and who was doing what to who.

Yes the girls were very docile weren't they.

Who was the young couple at the meal?

I've tried to read a recap of s 1 and 2 but all the words began to mix. I can't recall any of it...

If anyone can sort that shit out it'll be Cawood!
Absolutely loved it tonight. Slightly gutted can't binge but I think I may appreciate it over the next few weeks.

Scary gym teacher was Bill Sykes in Dickensian

Also a Night Watcher in Game of Thrones

Zingy123 · 01/01/2023 23:05

The young couple were Sarah Lancashire's son and Ann. Ann was kidnapped and raped by Tommy Lee Royce. She is now a police officer

Mammajay · 01/01/2023 23:09

I loved the first episode of third series today but thought it would be on iPlayer but only series 1 and 2 on iPlayer. I also can find the one off Christmas special of Detectorists on iPlayer. What's going on?

Security blanket?
Armour?
Not wanting to show her body in case she's criticised?
Cold due to malnutrition?

Sadly, I can't think of a happy reason for it.😥

The Christmas Special is tacked on to the end of Series 3 on iplayer. It's listed under series 3 after episode 6 as a "special".

Both are on the front page - Happy Valley is the lead programme.

It was so harrowing what happened to Ann that I find it weird that Ann would end up in a relationship with Catherine's son of all people. How many connections to Tommy does Catherine need?

PrincessScarlett · 01/01/2023 23:21

And I also worry what the little girl is hiding wearing her coat all the time. Even the neighbours have commented on it 😢

I don’t agree I am afraid. I have found that abusive people often use the people around them to justify their abuse and to support it. They love nothing more than getting others on side against their target.

Abusive teacher doesn't think he's abusive. He's self righteous and thinks he is completely correct, a position justified by the fact that his wife is, in fact, involved in something criminal (despite the fact that she's clearly been driven to her current predicament by his treatment). When the police turned up, he'd have assumed they were automatically on his side. He'd also have reacted very differently had a male police officer turned up. A female officer turning up just led him to believe that she would automatically bend to his word being the authority - that's what he's used to from females.

PrincessScarlett · 01/01/2023 23:26

Although I don't think Jo realises the extent of what her friendly neighbour pharmacist is up to dealing drugs to all and sundry. Presumably she got the prescription from him originally and he's offered her extra when prescription ran out.

Calmdown14 · 01/01/2023 23:28

Sally Wainwright writes such good female characters/relationships.

They are always complicated but the interaction between them is fantastic.

Agree about the tension and the 'ordinary' characters in over their heads.

Poke · 01/01/2023 23:36

Had to watch with a cushion in front of my eyes in parts. Makes me squirm, but just love love love it.

The characters are just brilliant. Definitely think it’s Clare and her fella taking Ryan to see Tommy. She’s an easily led by him and he’s one to keep an eye on.

Lifesyoungdream · 01/01/2023 23:36

Great first episode. I agree I think it is Claire and Neill taking Ryan but I really hope I’m wrong.
Really hope Catherine sorts out the P.E. teacher. He has it coming to him.

PrincessScarlett · 01/01/2023 23:40

I wonder whether Neil has some sort of connection to Tommy so has from the start since he's been with Claire been keeping Tommy up to date about Ryan 🤷🏻‍♀️

IwantToRetire · 01/01/2023 23:41

I think whoever said up thread that the couple taking Ryan to the prison is Catherine's son and Ann. I have some memory from the early series that Ann made a suprisingly sympathetic comment about TLR finding out about being a father - but maybe not.

I think that is because I couldn't bear it to be Clare, and what other couple is there.

I think it is interesting to see how the characters have changed, or not, in the 7 years.

I do think some of the comedy is a bit forced, but then if you were dealing with the horrors that the police see each day, it must be a sort of coping mechanism.

And part of me thought on no, not another abusive husband, and then reminded myself that 2 women a week are killed by their male partner, every week.

I think Sally Wainwright manages to fit in events that reflect actual statistics without making it a lecture.

But I am now half looking forward to future episodes and half not wanting to watch because this is the last series.

As an after thought, I have been quite cross that a lot of the media are going on about how stressful it has been for James Norton to play TLR, but have seen nothing about Sally Wainwright or Sarah Lancashire.

(Sorry I put in the bit about binge watching as I thought someone said it would be available on line but didn't check.)
