Another vote for Claire and Neil here. I can't see it being Ann and Daniel or Nevison. Or Catherine's ex. Although I can't really see it being Claire, unless Neil has influenced her. Claire was able to get what the teacher called Ryan out of him, indicating a sense of closeness/ trust

Sluj · 01/01/2023 22:10

Very, very good

Jellylover · 01/01/2023 22:10

Didn’t watch the first two series but thought I’d give it a go tonight. OMG what have I missed. It’s edge of your seat stuff isn’t it!

Netaporter · 01/01/2023 22:10

💯 agree that Colm O’Neill is manipulating. He always plays a great twisted character. He seems very invested in Ryan to a point I would think crosses boundaries. Reckon he hates Catherine. .

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2023 22:10

Loved this, I’ve finally watched a good programme on Christmas telly - it’s so nice to sit back and watch a lot of different strands unwind and not worry because it will all become clear at some point. Hooked.

LizzieSiddal · 01/01/2023 22:11

I heard an interview with Sally Wainwright on Woman's Hour last week. Such a lovely person, she and Sarah met when Sally wrote for Coronation Street. The interview is really worth a listen.

Sluj · 01/01/2023 22:12

@Jellylover , you have 1 week to catch up on the first 2 series, well worth doing

💯 the sister and the boyfriend I reckon betraying her.

Loved this opening episode. I really hope James Norton is still in the running for James Bond.

Oh is James Norton in the running for James Bond? He'd have to get rid of the god awful long hair first! 🤣

MabelMoo23 · 01/01/2023 22:14

Twats!!!!

bloody love it. Was absolutely gripped

PrincessScarlett · 01/01/2023 22:14

Fantastic first episode. Best thing I've seen in absolutely ages.

Threadkillacilla · 01/01/2023 22:15

Claire wouldn't do that.

cheeseisthebest · 01/01/2023 22:16

That was absolutely fantastic. But I really can't remember the names of her family so no idea who any of them are.

LuluBlakey1 · 01/01/2023 22:18

The character played by Con O'Neil is my bet- I don't know if he could talk Claire into it. She is weak where he is concerned and he makes me uncomfortable. He's needy and doesn't think things through clearly. I don't trust him. Can appear a bit harmless but he's a fuck-up.

DuncanBiscuits · 01/01/2023 22:21

Totally Clare and her fella taking Ryan to the prison.

I want to be Catherine Cawood when I grow up.

WinnieFosterReads · 01/01/2023 22:27

I'd forgotten just how tense Happy Valley is. Even when not very much is happening, you end up tied in knots knowing so many characters are in over their heads and it's all going to come crashing down for them.

It will be Claire that is taking Ryan to see his dad. She has always said Tommy is his dad and she'd probably think she's better being there than letting Ryan find someone else to take him.

I can't quite believe how much Ryan's actor has grown up. I always thought he was one of the best child actors on TV.

WhoWants2Know · 01/01/2023 22:27

In the recap, they did show shirtless Neil screaming at the pub door. They must have wanted that reminder for a reason

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2023 22:28

Why would Clare and him do that? Confused

Threadkillacilla · 01/01/2023 22:29

Not our Claire! It must be someone else.

How funny! I had no idea he was in the running, but was watching and thinking he should be. He's a terrific actor.

Sarah Lancashire needs to be given a dame hood. She's just terrific.

duc748 · 01/01/2023 22:33

Great stuff, and living up to expectations. My bloody Virgin box died with five mins to go, so I no choice but to reboot the telly and watch on I player, where I'm resisting the temptation of further eps. You do get tidier sub titles on the I player thoughbut.

Netaporter · 01/01/2023 22:33

Absolutely she should be a Dame. If you haven’t watched her HBO portrayal of Julia Childs watch it. It was one of the best things in TV in years.

Netaporter · 01/01/2023 22:34

@duc748 it’s one ep per week 😉

duc748 · 01/01/2023 22:35

Ah, OK, ta. Suits me, anyway.

Rollergirl11 · 01/01/2023 22:35

Excellent episode. Only thing I didn’t think was realistic was how controlling the abusive teacher was in front of Catherine. He would be far more subtle in front of a police officer.

Another one voting for Claire & Neil taking Ryan.
