Just rewatched series one and two to refresh myself. Sarah Lancashire is so good.

Why was her character a sergeant again? Was she a detective but downgraded?

I may do a big re-watch over Christmas. Very excited about series 3! New Year's Day, I believe. I think she had left CID because she needed less pressure and more flexibility around her hours once she had her grandson to look after, and of course her alcoholic sister too, and I would imagine (can't remember if this was spelled out) she'd have needed a bit of time off to cope after her daughter's death.

CanofCant · 10/12/2022 08:50

Yes, that's right. She talks to her former colleague about it in series one. I rewatched S2 recently, S1 is amazing but v harrowing. What Tommy does to Anne and Kristen is just awful.

I'm very much looking forward to S3 but almost too scared to watch it as I know it'll be brutal. I hope Catherine finds peace and resolution and that Ryan doesn't follow the path of his father as she fears he will. A bit too invested there!

strawberriesplease · 10/12/2022 08:53

The final scene of S2 is chilling, her looking at Ryan and wondering what is ahead.

Yes, think it's going to be brutal but bloody good.

Sarah Lancashire is fantastic in this role, she really inhabits it. Must be pretty stressful to play. Rest of the cast are wonderful too. I'm getting a box of tissues for S3 as its definitely the last in series and I'm expecting something terminal and moving.

XenoBitch · 10/12/2022 19:57

I can't bring myself to rewatch 1&2. That young cop getting run over still haunts me now. Such a brutal scene.

ThePoshUns · 10/12/2022 19:58

I'm the same I don't think I could re watch series 1&2 as so brutal, but will definitely be there for series 3.

shreddies · 10/12/2022 20:00

Can't wait

RandomUsernameHere · 10/12/2022 20:02

Just re-watched 1and 2 too, absolutely can't wait for 3!

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/12/2022 20:03

Assuming it will be about yet another grisly murder or serial killer - I will give it a miss. I watched the other two, don't really know why. I've decided to stop getting my entertainment from horrific crimes even if they are fictional.

strawberriesplease · 10/12/2022 21:04

I like that all the good characters are so flawed. Alcoholic sister, ex husband cheating, son broken relationship. It's such great character arcs.

I only just started watching it recently, just the first two episodes in season 1 but she is so good! I need to watch the rest in time for New Years day

stillvicarinatutu · 11/12/2022 04:48

As a woman in the police I can honestly say this is the most realistic depiction of what it means to be a woman in the police ! It's brilliant. Can't wait for s3 .

HRTQueen · 11/12/2022 12:05

I rewatched S1 and S2 in preparation

its absolutely fantastic acting, script, storyline and setting one of the best series I’ve watched

can’t wait but sad it will be the last series (tissues shall be close to hand)

VinoDino · 11/12/2022 19:28

I'm re-watching S2, it's sooo good! All the actors are great apart from Shirley Henderson. I don't know why any director sits through her breathless pantomime performance and thinks that's decent acting.

Roll on season 3.

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/12/2022 19:30

Breathless pantomime 😆 I always think it’s like somebody has asked her to put on the voice of a ghost child

Motnight · 11/12/2022 19:32

Just watched series 1 and 2 again. Cast fantastic and it is great to see so many strong female leads.

Threadkillacilla · 11/12/2022 19:34

I'm rewatching to prepare. It's so good.

DorritLittle · 11/12/2022 19:37

Love this programme!

TrentCrimm · 11/12/2022 19:42

It's wonderfully written and acted.

The only slight downside for me is that I live there, and it's really quite distracting to see your house in the background of some very dramatic scenes!

Threadkillacilla · 11/12/2022 19:48

I think they nailed the Yorkshire ness though @TrentCrimm don't you?

Thoroughly agree. She is so one note in everything she does.

I hope she's not in the new series.

Iliveinanoodie · 11/12/2022 19:59

I've just binged watched both series. Never seen it before as I don't always like the 'watch the woman get tortured and murdered' type of drama. But this one, I'll make an exception for. It's brilliant. Sarah Lancashire is so good in it, and it gives insight into all the main characters, flaws and all, really well. Gripping.

TrentCrimm · 11/12/2022 20:03

Absolutely!

They use local area and street names etc even though they mix up the actual locations. And pronounce them proper Grin

VinoDino · 11/12/2022 20:10

@AlexCabot @Cuppasoupmonster honestly my heart sinks whenever I see her name pop up in any programme. It's not even a 'different in a good way' style, it's just annoying and she is the same in everything she does.

Anyway! Sarah Lancashire is outstanding but Siobhan Finneran's support acting is subtly superb too which I think gets overlooked. James Norton nails Tommy Lee Royce.

And to echo the PP, I'm also a woman in the police and it's very real.

I've never been to Yorkshire but I love all the Yorkshire-ness 😁

CourtneeLuv · 11/12/2022 20:33

I'm so happy to read this! Just watched 1&2 for the first time and can't believe I haven't watched them sooner.
