@storminabuttercup
You're so right !
This is why I need to rewatch because I totally forgot that Ryan was on the boat wasn't he 😫

WinnieFosterReads · 10/01/2023 16:48

TLR was involved with the OCG before the Ann kidnap. He knew they were putting drugs through the caravan park but didn't testify against them.
He also said he was there when the OCG murdered the man in the reservoir but he blamed their rivals instead. I think they're manipulating Neil as a thank you for TLR not testifying against them on the drugs case and the murder case.

Jo, a teacher's wife, is walking around town covered in bruises but nobody seems to bat an eyelid.

Exactly! Why didn't Catherine arrange for ss to do a welfare check. We've only seen brief glimpses of the kids and they seem understandably withdrawn so why aren't school or anyone else bothered? I know they can't include the full history of every character but Jo is hardly acting covertly as I'd imagine most dv survivors and addicts are, there's red flags everywhere.

At least the other mother from school seems concerned let's hope she mentions it to someone.

About neckbeard laying off Ryan, not sure how it officially works in schools but surely there'd be whispers of his background? Neckbeard was a bit daft choosing the son of a violent criminal, but then I suppose even though TLR is involved in stuff has he got deep links into the OCG? He was mainly a lone Wolf right.

We've started watching again from the start as DP was asking too many questions. The scene up on the moors shook me up all over again, as did scenes with Annie, he's one sick f*

Son of a violent criminal = kid with no father at home, probably abandonment issues and probably an unstable home with a single parent who may be vulnerable.

All Hepworth knows until Catherine shows up in uniform is that Ryan doesn't have a mother or father on his school records. He may have heard rumours about his father, almost certainly knows his mother is dead because that's the sort of information that would be passed on to school staff. He sees him turn up to football with assorted adults, but not the same ones each time.

That is the impression of a very vulnerable and easily manipulated kid.

I'm not convinced knowing his gran is a police officer will necessarily put him off. It tells him his main carer is often out, has a high pressure job, so likely to be absent/distracted. Plus the job is likely to be a cause of some teenage embarrassment/rebellion etc. easy to persuade the kid not to tell her stuff etc. Also imagine how much more pleasure he will get from abusing Ryan when he is also getting one over the police woman who showed him up.

He'll think he's way cleverer than Catherine too because men like him always do!

Thanks for info re TLC OCG! Yes I remember the scene now when a sack or something got split and it became obcious that more than just sand was being transported.

I loved that line. 😂

foxlover47 · 10/01/2023 17:18

@Emotionalsupportviper me too 😅
I think it's a little bit of light relief amongst all the dark isn't it

JaneJeffer · 10/01/2023 17:24

It's like when he bought his disguise from the charity shop in previous series. I couldn't stop laughing at him pretending to read War and Peace Grin

storminabuttercup · 10/01/2023 12:53

Jo is an interesting character isn't she? I'm probably going to mess up my wording here but her offering to go to bed with Faisal was a risk with an abusive husband. With abuse often comes jealousy, suspicion etc?

In episode one jo asked faisal if he wanted sex, and it seemed clear that she's in an abusive relationship with him too as it looks like he gets to shag her in exchange for the pills if she's no money.

foxlover47 · 10/01/2023 17:28

@JaneJeffer the irony of war and peace 😂😂

A weirdly endearing look. I can't be the only one that while acknowledging he's a violent thug there's something very watchable about him Shock.

I’m another one who thinks that Ryan’s planned revenge might be on TLR. Given that he’s quite an angry teen he’s very affectionate towards Catherine. He’s said, “I love you” to her and returned to kiss her on the cheek when he was going out. He also looked quite bereft when she talked about her plan to go travelling and suggested that they went together. I wonder if Catherine` has struggled with their relationship for so long that she’s missed how much he loves her.

I’ve been rewatching earlier episodes and have been reminded how much she fears Ryan turning out like TLR. Everything he does is seen through the prism of him becoming his father. 16 year old Ryan is outspoken, confrontational, emotional, sweary and brave. He reminds me mostly of Catherine herself. I wonder whether at some point she’ll realise who he actually takes after.

Osteospermum · 10/01/2023 17:49

If anyone wants a bit of back history, Series 1 Episode 6 about 20 mins in, Catherine, her ex and Daniel have a heated but revealing discussion about family dynamic with Becky. In the aftermath of Becky's death, Catherine asked Daniel 'Why didn't you die?' but can't remember saying it, also comments about mothers always blaming themselves when children don't behave, Ryan asking his dad where he was when his mum died, good episode to fill in some gaps.

longtompot · 10/01/2023 17:56

What was TLR in prison for before he was released and worked for the guy at the caravan park, moving drugs in bags of sand? It wasn't anything to do with Becky.

I don't think there was any abuse at Catherine's house between her ds or ex dh and Becky.
I do think Becky was the golden child, hence Daniels view of her, but got in with the wrong crowd which included TLR. I don't know if she was in a relationship with him, or if he just took advantage of her on drugs and raped her. Maybe after having Ryan and becoming clean she realised what had been happening and then couldn't cope.
I think Catherine's ex dh is asking all the questions as he is a reporter and did say he wanted to get into more gritty stories, which she encourages him to do in the last series I think.
I don't think there will be any revenge gang with Catherine and the lady who killed her son/half brother in the last series. I think there's just an empathy on both sides, with both women knowing how difficult it is to have a relative who is from difficult beginnings.
I really hope the pe teacher gets his comeuppance but I'm not sure he will. Maybe his wife will get him addicted to some drug from the pharmacist and he is then out there trying to score off the dealers. As much as she wants to kill him, I don't know if she could.
The scene with Catherine and her sister at the cafe was just brilliant. Both were upset but for different reasons. I think the reason Claire only went the once as she didn't want to see TLR again, and probably felt very disloyal to her sister, so thought she could keep both Ryan happy and feel she wasn't being disloyal even though by driving them she was. She might have just felt it was less so.

EmilyDickinson · 10/01/2023 18:07

I think TLR was in prison the first time for drug running.

@JaneJeffer the irony of war and peace 😂😂

Clever touch by the writer, James Norton played (a very dashing) Prince Andrei in the BBC adaptation.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/01/2023 18:15

TLR's first imprisonment was for drugs.

Seems he's been involved with the OCG for a while but probably only on the periphery, he's a lone wolf rather than a gang member. He is however useful to them as he's charming, manipulative and violent. They may well recognise that he is potentially dangerous to them as well as others, as he can't be intimidated or scared easily and has no loyalty or moral compass.

Excellently observed!

I hadn't realised, but you're right!

I'll bet she had to learn to control her temper when she was younger, too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2023 18:16

I would like jo to say rob is beating her up

And him to go to jail and Tommy to beat /kill him

Yes! Isn't one of the central theme nature v nurture? And isn't that potentially why Alison is back, to remind us that her son turned out to be a wrong un just like his abusive rapist father?
