I think it was a bit unprofessional of her to ask how his wife was in front of others. She was clearly asking in her capacity as a police officer.

What massive risks Jo is taking for the sake of diazepam. I could understand it if opiates but diazepam?!

Also, I don't know how it works but I'm surprised that an arrest and evidence of dv didn't warrant a ss referral. Catherine is usually so thorough in her assessment of situations but the fact that are 2 shell-shocked monosyllabic kids (I know they were in bed but she did know they had kids) didn't seem to register at all.

Benzos are pretty much as bad as opiates

James Norton is brilliant! Loved him as Sydney in Grantchester gutted he left that. He plays TLR fantastically chilling

Greatly · 10/01/2023 19:54

James Norton's accent is a bit off this season - I noticed because I watched season 1 and 2 just before

TwoMonthsOff · 10/01/2023 19:58

the script is superb

’New Jersey has the Sopranos we have the Kinesevics’

Coffeecreme · 10/01/2023 20:35

Rob is such a nasty piece of work

Coffeecreme · 10/01/2023 20:36

i hope he gets further comeuppance

sweatervest · 10/01/2023 20:41

Have read all this and am now thinking about Ashley's wife and kids and wondering where they are as she was a hoot and owned a salon and I know they're not real life people but would be nice to know where they are.

I was smitten with Ashley - such a great actor like his dad and so handsome and his beautiful green eyes and yea his wife was a piece of work wasn’t she? Wonder what happened about that ? I really didn’t want Ashley to get written off like that. And their farmhouse was beautiful

storminabuttercup · 10/01/2023 20:53

Just re watching series one, while TLR is hiding out there is speculation in the tabloids that he has been seen in Spain... he's learning Spanish in this series.

Probably means absolutely nothing like...

I thought he was hilarious even though he was a terrible person!

She was funny. 'Aren't you in the salon today?', 'yes I'm down there now, this is a hologram' Grin.

sweatervest · 10/01/2023 21:37

Lol to Ashley's wife I remember the hologram comment now!!!!
She was fabulous!!!!

Also I hope that someone has the sense to rename Halifax to sallyfax in homage to the unbelievably brilliant Sally Wainwright. Etc.

Is woman with truck the same actress as in previous series? She seemed different to me.

Someone mentioned up thread about running theme of nature v nurture, how Catherine seems to be in turmoil with herself about Ryan and who he will grow into as an adult. I think there will be some sort of stand off at the end, involving TLR, Catherine and Ryan and Ryan is going to have to choose between saving his granny or his ‘dad’. Ryan is already starting to feel like a misfit, and perhaps he will start showing some sympathy towards TLR as a result of visiting him in prison. I don’t see it ending well for Catherine, I think she is consumed by guilt over Becky, the drugs problem is off the scale and she feels responsible to some extent. Hence not wanting to back down over that councillor with the cocaine amongst other examples and now wanting to help her ex husband to expose what is happening with organised crime in the area. Just hope it doesn’t go the way of LOD with some crazy escape for TLR by the Knesevics.

Re people saying SS would be involved after police seeing evidence of DV. There is an initiative called Operation Encompass which relates to this very issue. The girls' school would be informed by the police - not sure if the DV victim (usually mother) would have the option to say they didn't want this to happen. The school would then be heavily involved as it's a safeguarding issue.

I referred to another technicality cock up on a different thread - Moaning Myrtle could not have used her dead sister's ID and qualifications to get a TA job as she wouldn't have be able to get the required enhanced DBS clearance. It would obviously come back as the applicant is deceased. No DBS = no job in a school.

I know we should suspend reality to some degree, but glaring errors like this piss me off.

RichardsGear · 11/01/2023 00:57

Definitely don't think lovely Richard abused and impregnated his own daughter though - that's really left field. He's going to be a goner this series though.

CuriousMama · 11/01/2023 01:25

@RichardsGear good point re DBS.

undersleptagain · 11/01/2023 01:37

I don't understand why Catherine didn't call in social services when she went into a house where there were children and there was evidence of domestic violence and drug abuse. The toxic trio, dv, substance abuse and mental health issues.

Could these errors in judgement be to show she's losing her will and love of the job? her attitude to the job seems much less committed in this series. Like knowing how long she's got left to the very day. It's in contrast to risking her life in series 1.
Has the job finally got her down, I mean Tommy being released in series one was a killer for her, Ashley doing a deal, all those things will make her wonder why they bother?
Just musing

I thought that! Surely an officer is obliged to report that?

SW usually never misses anything like that in her writing, that’s why I love her.

jaicobain · 11/01/2023 07:50

Though I have a friend who’s a social worker and she says a lot of the cases that get missed are where the family are in a middle class home…nice areas etc because it doesn’t occur that abuse can still be happening in a house of ‘rich people’. It’s like a form of unconscious reverse snobbery. I daresay if Catherine had gone to that call and they’d been living in a tower block flat, she would’ve called SW.
