There are 2 existing thread were fans have been discussing rewatching series 1 & 2

(First autocarrot of theNew Year - oh JOY!)

re. the trans chat - I think this was a bit of "fun" by both the writer and the director. Where else have they every done arty filming through obscuring glass?

It didn't occur to me that it was anything to do with trans but having a butch lesbian in a top role.

If the character makes another appearance then I am wrong, but if it is this one off, then it is joke on us the viewers as it is filmed to make us think .... :)

And also of course as others have said, it seems many people with connections to Sally Wainwright are popping up here and there in this final series.

(Not quite as bad as Christmas Carole where it looked like Suranne Jones had made parts for all her friends as though putting on an end of year review!)

Yes maybe. But the staring? I hope she isn't the Knezevic's inside man (lady) it would be a clunky finish to it all. I'm getting a bit overinvested and we've only had one episode Grin.

duc748 · 03/01/2023 17:26

Making me think of a re-watch tonight. It's not like there's anything else on TV!

Pebble21uk · 03/01/2023 18:45

Just watched the first ep... I think we're getting a bit too bogged down in the CSI played by Belinda O Hooley! I follow her on instagram (she and her RL wife are a folk duo as mentioned a few pages ago) She put a post up today thanking SW for suggesting her for the role. As far as I'm aware she's not a trained actor or done any TV before, so I can't imagine she's been given a very big part. Remains to be seen!
Yes, her performance / delivery was a bit 'gentle' but it's good to see representation on screen! Something SW is passionate about!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/01/2023 19:01

There's nothing on TV at the moment of the quality of Happy Valley, but it's so good that that would apply pretty much whenever you tried the comparison!

We watched episode 1 of Stonehouse last night (ITV) and plan to watch ep 2 tonight. True story, which I just about remember from the time, although I was a young teen at the time. Not exactly a subtle portrayal, but then it's an absolutely gobsmacking story - politics, affairs, blackmail, fraud, spying, MP faking his own death ...

Yes sorry that's my fault. I just thought the scene stuck out, I wasn't sure if it was the (imo only it seems) ambiguous gender, her manspreading pose, the long stare or what. It just didn't seem to fit but as you and others have said maybe it's just SW giving her pals a slot. I'll stop talking about it now promise Grin.

beezlebubnicky · 03/01/2023 22:16

Absolutely loving the theories on this thread - thanks to whoever linked to those two articles.

I too think it's Claire and Neil. I can't imagine why Claire would do that. And maybe there is something off about Neil - as someone mentioned, they showed him kicking off drunk in the recap.

Anxious that Catherine won't live through this.

TokyoSushi · 03/01/2023 22:20

I've started watching the Traitors to get me through the week, it's amazing, I've watched 7 episodes in 2 days!

Ooo I'll have a look.
Totally different slant I'm binging Ghosts. So sad there's not many left 😞

NoWrecksToday · 03/01/2023 23:31

There’s something about the way SW writes complex, uncomfortable but intensely believable relationships. Making me wonder about the cosy family scenes around the kitchen table. Are we about to see some of them in a totally new light?

Like the recap before the credits, where we see the mother shoot her rapist son dead. Then Catherine cradled her head in sympathy while they waited outside. That scene was just brilliantly gut wrenching. I’ll bet we’re in for more of the same.

IwantToRetire · 04/01/2023 19:38

I cant find the link but prior to the first episode of series 3 was shown, it was reported that Sally Wainwright had delayed writing this series as she wanted the same actor to play Ryan but had to wait while he grew up! Which was a bit of a gamble I suppose.

re needing a family tree, and sorry if this has already been posted, there is this www.denofgeek.com/tv/happy-valley-recap-catherine-tommy-lee-royce-ryan-story-so-far/

Loving this thread. Haven’t been able to stop thinking about HV since watching it last night.

I predict a very sad end to it all. Purely based on the fact that this is the last series and there’s no discussion about continuing it. There seems to be such finality suggested by SW and the actors.

I am absolutely convinced that both Catherine and TLR will die. There is no other way of ending it.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 04/01/2023 21:10

zoya I think you’re right.

Sorry but any other Calderdale folk giggling at them making Hx swimming baths the police station!

Yep!

ACJane · 04/01/2023 21:51

A minor issue but why did Nevison wait quite this long to ask Catherine out!
I know his wife died but seven years is a while.

NoWrecksToday · 04/01/2023 22:30

I’ve just listened to the Shrine podcast and am so happy to have found them again! Another reason to relish waiting a week for each episode and enjoying the chat in between.

ACJane · 04/01/2023 21:51

I know his wife died but seven years is a while.

Maybe he guessed that Catherine's working life wasn't conducive to a healthy private life and he's been waiting until they could jet off into retirement together?

IwantToRetire · 04/01/2023 23:30

I am more pessimistic and think Catherine will survive, but will have been betrayed by Clare, which would be the worst.

And because of this and Ryan wanting contact with his father Catherine will retire with no one she cares about being part of her life any more.

Maybe the landrover or whatever it was, will be her lifeboat and it will finish with her driving off into the sunset on her own, bitter and no longer able to make sarcastic jokes.

A life dedicated to others, and no thanks in return.

Alternatively she pairs up with Nevison and they sail off on a grand global cruise

OP posts:
TottersBlankly · 05/01/2023 06:15

Surely Nevison can’t be entirely benign through the whole story? There must be a point at which he and Cathrine come into serious conflict. Waste of a character otherwise.

I sincerely hope SW saw the final season of Unforgotten before writing this season of HV. That would guarantee Catherine walks away, breathing unaided, with all her limbs intact. Otherwise …

creamcoffee · 05/01/2023 06:48

watched last night,
so excellent

Netaporter · 05/01/2023 08:11

The only part for me that was unrealistic was the fact she could afford the Defender or the fact she thinks a Defender will get her to the destination 😂 They’ve massively increased in value since LR stopped making them. They are also completely shite to drive. By the time she gets to the Himalayan foothills she’ll have no spine left from the bone shaking. (I used to be in the Motor trade so probably view cars used in TV series in a different way 🤣)

BlueThursday · 05/01/2023 08:14

I’ll be gutted when it finishes knowing it’s the end but it will remain drama gold for not having been churned out series after series for the sake of it (looking at you LOD)

who would have thought 30 years ago that Raquel Wolstenhulme would be one of the most gritty, beloved actors in the country

Mintyt · 05/01/2023 09:46

@PrincessScarlett oh very good spot, yes as he just bumped into her didn't he

My family still refer to ‘dodo rails’ in her honour Grin
