The horrible violent nasty coercive teacher is having an affair with someone related to the crime gang leader isn't he?
Apparently.

Interesting. Maybe with one of the henchmen we saw in the first ep?

EsmaCannonball · 03/01/2023 12:10

Ryan and his friend joked about the Horrible PE Teacher having an affair with, IIRC, another teacher. If Ryan had maybe filmed them at it on school property then could he be blackmailing them to take him to the prison? Maybe HPET has a reason for calling Ryan a shitstain?

I saw him on a cast list, possibly imdb , although I didn't spot him in the episode! Who was he?

He interviewed TLR didn't he? I thought he looked familiar and looked him up just now, though I didn't know his name.

The guy playing the pharmacist was familiar too, turns out he was in The Other One as the hapless cheating partner of the main character.
I really like the continuity of having the same actors for the roles. I don't think having a different actor for Ryan would have worked. I think it's nice seeing the angry little boy grown up

Maybe but I'm not sure how you are deducing this? Ryan and his friend said he was having an affair with a Mrs Oats a teacher at the school...not sure is she is connected to the gang though...😀

Southeastdweller · 03/01/2023 12:34

Ryan also called him a ‘shirt lifting arse bandit’ which makes me think he knows Rob is bisexual and that a story will emerge from that, maybe blackmail.

CanofCant · 03/01/2023 12:41

The driver of the two gang members disguised as builders looked like Anthony Flanagan.

I also think it was Claire and Neil that took Ryan to see TLR. She's always been a bit thick and flakey about most things tbh so even if Neil isn't manipulating her she still thinks Ryan deserves to see his dad.

Yes, he was in The Other One and also an awful crime thriller about a woman who may or may not have fallen down stairs, or Vera, or something. He did it, as it turned out.

He is destined to play Sunak should they ever dramatise his life! Except he is very tall.

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2023 13:16

Not Vera - The Long Call.

PrincessScarlett · 03/01/2023 13:47

I don't get the whole trans thing either as always saw her as a woman 🤷🏻‍♀️

Totally missed Ryan calling the teacher a shirt lifting arse bandit but did clock him and his mate saying he was having an affair with another teacher.

I think teacher or his wife is more likely to get caught up with the drug gang due to the dodgy pharmacist.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/01/2023 14:11

I think it was only one person who couldn't see that she is a woman.

ButtonSister · 03/01/2023 14:19

Reasons to suspect the sister and her partner to be the couple going with the grandson.
Claire said to Catherine something about never knowing how much she should tell her about the grandson.
The grandson had confided to Claire, not Catherine, about the nasty teacher.
Catherine said to someone else she still couldn't quite trust the partner.
The partner kicking off after relapsing on alcohol was included in the catch up at the beginning of the episode.
Claire will genuinely be doing this in the belief that it's in the boy's interest, possibly thinking that seeing him in prison will make the boy accept his dad really is a bad person, thus stopping him from idolising him.

longtompot · 03/01/2023 14:23

@Piggywaspushed he would make an excellent Sunak!

ilovebrie8 · 03/01/2023 14:38

Pharmacist is a dead ringer for Sunak!!

It doesn't matter what gender they are. I wish I'd never menrioned it, but the masculine appearance and mansrpreading did seem to be attempting to get people to wonder. Nothing wrong with he/she or they anyway.

Anywayyy the scene itself jarred imo, in a brilliant drama full of interesting and believable characters a near monosyllabic Chief Super just seemed odd.

I was trying to think who he reminded me of... Yes! Sunak!

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2023 15:25

The scene did jar - it was weird as I said upthread as if it was saying 'look at this slightly sinister conversation'. All very LOD- low lighting and shot through windows.

Perhaps it's because it's really a swimming baths!!

Grin

Yes! It was more LOD I was half expecting Ted to appear.

Tommy in court next week, the Knesevics/OCG are going to spring him aren't they..

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2023 15:59

I do love LOD but I really hope it doesn't go down those kinds of routes. Sally W is a better, more believable writer than Jed Mercurio.

But , too much LOD is making me think all the cops are bent.

JaneJeffer · 03/01/2023 16:14

I'm another who prefers the old police station with wooden doors!

duc748 · 03/01/2023 16:19

Well, bearing in mind that the last season of LOD was based on the real life case of the investigative journalist murdered in a London pub car park, I wouldn't call it that far-fetched. But yeah, SW is a better and subtler writer.

Oh definitely. Mercurio always goes too far, he could really take some tips from SW's writing. Her characters are flawed, likeable, unlikeable, interesting, funny. Early series of LOD were so good but it just descended into over hyped farce.

Hope Tommy gets a haircut for court. I know he's nasty but he is quite mesmerising too, James Norton such a brilliant actor how he makes himself such a convincing psycho.

I think that comment was just adolescent boy insult.

At one point in his teens the worst insult my son and his friends could think of to throw at someone was "he's a right girl". He's now in his 40s and has gay and straight mates and doesn't even think about it.

HSally W's ear for dialogue is superb, too - all of it is natural and believable.

People really do talk like this - it must be a joy to act one of her scenes.

Agree with that - unless it has significance later it seemed a little out of kil
ter.
