It was basically the producers trying to set it up so the faithful would win. Without that, Wilf would have won easily. But with a reluctant ‘recruit’ that Wilf couldn’t resist backstabbing? Wilf was doomed by the producers…
This is interesting though because only 2 traitors had left and everyone knew there were 3 (right?) So since the departing players need to identify themselves as faithful/traitor before going, how was it going to be possible for Wilf to win if he's the only traitor left?
Separate point: on a Guardian comments thread someone said that there's a role-play game called Werewolves that this is based on, and in that game the prize money is either split by the last faithfuls standing OR by ALL the traitors. Even if you've left, you still share the winnings, because Traitors are a team. I think that version would have been more interesting.
