My guess: refegees coming over, using up housing, costing social services resources etc. Not an issue when it was only a few, but the more that done the more intolerant the locals get.

Random thought - Lawrence is Gorbachev and in trying to reform Gilead (USSR), he'll bring about its end.

I'm thinking now if Tuello is a double-agent & has traded Serena & June for Nick? Got visions of the train being stopped in the next episode & Serena/June being hauled off with their babies & being returned to Gilead! They can't run easily with babies in tow.

But perhaps that doesn't tie in with Nick's meltdown in Gilead? Maybe he feels he has nothing left to lose? He knows he's a dead man anyway.

I wonder if Janine will end up being the heroine in the end.

Tuello warned June about that directly in last weeks episode re New Bethlehem - he said that the leader might be working for peace but the next one could be Putin.

How come Janine and the Martha got taken into the van.. what did the Martha do?

The Martha was the one prepping the wedding who told Janine about June. She is presumably Mayday.

I wonder of Janine being taken and the Martha are a sign of Lawrence on the turn. He has probably always known the Martha was Mayday but either allowed it openly or turned a blind eye. Now that Naomi is there and he has a bit more power he may be turning nore Gileadean. Power gone to his head and not to mention how furious he is at June and her refusing to be the poster girl for New Bethlehem.

I think Janine realised from the cold, unpleasant talk Mrs P gave her, that she would never be allowed any real contact with Angela anyway. She feels her life is basically over.

I think it was the news of June and the use of "Ofjoseph" that finally pushed Janine over the edge, plus the fact Angela was going to he kept away for 6 months. Are we sure it was Lawrence's Martha in the van with Janine?

I think if Laurence hasn’t gone full Gilead it’s pretty dangerous having Mrs Putnam in the house.

Thanks whoever suggested the Eyes on Gilead podcast, I've been listening to that. Still have the last one to catch up on. Maybe they'll talk about the Martha on there.

I was reminding myself last night that it's Josh and Zoe Bartlett from The West Wing...a lifetime ago.

Janine had that little smirk on her face, didn't she? She wasn't cowed - she was determined , like a different woman.

I was almost a bit disappointed with the last episode. I had to google for a map of Gilead to see where they were actually going!

The series has had me thinking though that basically the main theme of this is that the mental strength of the women has survived Gilead's system. Whether a handmaid like June or a wife like Serena they were playing a role to survive but that ultimately they still connect as women. Hard to explain.

My husband who has not watched any of it was there last night when I was watching - he said why are those houses normal? "That's Canada" then "these man look like Nazis" so yes...

The soundtrack is so random sometimes, I can't get Kokomo by The Beach Boys out of my head now!

just listened to the eyes on Gilead, they say it's the Martha from the house.

I hated the scenes when they were heading for the trains- def reminiscent of the scenes when fleeing Gilead back at the start :(

liked the ending though . If there was no series 6 then that would work as an ending

I finally got round to watching the movie Get Out last night and the actor playing the male baddie is Commander Lawrence!

I’m wondering if Joseph Lawrence is actually the main baddie in this. He allows some rebellion to happen (so the rebels feel they are doing something) but not too much. He keeps his wife in Gilead when she needs mood stabilisers. He chooses Naomi, who is hugely vulnerable - she thought he was going to send her to the colonies - and whose husband he had killed. He came up with the idea for the colonies.

He comes across as likeable but it doesn’t mean he is good.
