Sad to say I thought the plotting in this last episode was really contrived and so deliberately trying to get characters in place for the start of the next series.
Why would June walk down the street instead of the pavement, and then even when she heard the car she didn't get on the pavement. Seriously. This is the woman who has kept alive through far worse.
Presumably so that Luke could be written out as he is now facing manslaughter charges and leave June free to go through the will they wont they with Nick. who also totally against character punched Lawrence in public. Not creditable.
But yes as others have said, Lawrence cares not only about Lawrence but about Lawrence's vision of how Gilead should be, so anyone who doesn't cooperate with him is at risk, but those who could be a useful tool are helped. He has no beliefs. He just wants to achieve his goal. (Isn't he meant to be the economics / finance side of Gilead rather than morals, faith etc.)
Only June and Luke left for the train because it was done as an emergency once they realised Luke would be arrested. The train was for Vancouver so that they could then sail to Hawaii. Maybe at this point June really thinks they will get there, but no doubt on the train journey something will happen and she will revert to fight back mode with Serena as her side kick(?!) or leave Nicole with her.
And yes I think once Janine heard about June being attacked and the former Mrs Putnam trying to play at being friends she just thought no, I am not playing this game anymore (and gives the writers of the next series an opportunity to give her a bigger role?). And poor Aunt Lydia with her crush on Janine, so wanting to help her but still wanting her to accept being a Handmaid, and apparently taken in by Janine's faking this. So this will be another demerit against Lydia.
Interesting idea about Tuello being a double agent, but have notice that June has also, in a genuine way, be talking religiously. Something she said after the little girl was nearly killed. I had thought that Serena would get the woman who rescued her (very cross that we weren't shown what happened ie that maybe there are some Canadians still helping refugees from Gilead and America) to take her to Tuello. Well maybe she did and that is how she was on the train, as he seems to have tickets ready to hand out to June and Luke.
I just think that sometimes they dont get the balance right between the politics and machinations on all sides and the action heroine scenes. Quite a disjointed end, but leaves the plot wide open for the next series.
