Just rewatched series one and two to refresh myself. Sarah Lancashire is so good.

Why was her character a sergeant again? Was she a detective but downgraded?

Just saw the trailer, so excited!

TokyoSushi · 11/12/2022 22:39

This thread reminded me to rewatch and I watched 4 episodes of season 1 today! Even better than I remembered, absolutely harrowing and Sarah Lancashire is beyond fantastic. I'll have it all watched I'm sure over the next couple of days.

TottersBlankly · 12/12/2022 07:16

I love listening to Shirley Henderson!

Her reading of Goblin Market is revelatory.

So looking forward to S3 - but I don’t think I could re-watch the first two. They prompted such overwhelming emotion and were impossible to slough off.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/12/2022 16:32

I cba to watch s1&2 again but there were good

@AlexCabot @Cuppasoupmonster honestly my heart sinks whenever I see her name pop up in any programme. It's not even a 'different in a good way' style, it's just annoying and she is the same in everything she does.

Anyway! Sarah Lancashire is outstanding but Siobhan Finneran's support acting is subtly superb too which I think gets overlooked. James Norton nails Tommy Lee Royce.

And to echo the PP, I'm also a woman in the police and it's very real.

I've never been to Yorkshire but I love all the Yorkshire-ness 😁

And he's so playing against type, he's bloody brilliant here. Swooooooooooon thud.

whatsthestory123 · 13/12/2022 02:44

yep re watched 1 & 2
cant wait for 3

VinoDino · 11/12/2022 19:28

I'm re-watching S2, it's sooo good! All the actors are great apart from Shirley Henderson. I don't know why any director sits through her breathless pantomime performance and thinks that's decent acting.

Roll on season 3.

This is very true. Made me 😂

stillvicarinatutu · 13/12/2022 03:38

Yorkshire lass and Yorkshire cop here .

I had to learn to say Ey up and it"l be reight 😂

ellebelli · 13/12/2022 12:05

I'm in Lancashire but close to the yourkshire border and it'l be reight is a common saying of mine lol.
Looking forward to this.

GladysB · 13/12/2022 15:16

Can't wait for this. Series 1&2 both excellent and while I did think Catherine got a bit too much of the action, happening across a murder in series 2 on a routine call out then chasing Detective John when a whole room of CID hadn't joined the dots, she is the sort of police officer you'd want around when things were going pear shaped.

James Norton just excellent, such a convincing pyscho. Not keen on Tommy's hairdo though in series 3 and did he stitch up those face lacerations himself Shock

TottersBlankly · 14/12/2022 20:00

Are we allowed to comment on the trailer here?

Highfivemum · 14/12/2022 20:07

Love love love this programme. Sarah Lancashire is amazing in it as is Norton.
a Detective is not higher then a sgt. a detective is a PC but specialist in being a detective So is a DC. But is only same rank as a PC. I presumed she was a DS. Detective sgt but moved back to being a PS Police sgt to get more social hours with her grandson.

I love Happy Valley and so excited for S3! I actually loved Shirley Henderson's performance; I think it's so creepy as she is so understated and mousy - her tiny physicality makes what she's doing all the more menacing.

Any predictions for season 3? Can't think what the link to Tommy and the gang murder will be about - maybe something he did before he went inside? I predict a lot of the turmoil with Ryan will be about him maybe wanting to visit Tommy. Maybe he never told his gran he was corresponding with him secretly.

Also, when did Catherine tell Ryan about what Tommy did to his mum - or has she? I did think to myself she'd have to at some point, as people in the local area must know what happened to Becky and it would have eventually got back to him somehow.

Threadkillacilla · 18/12/2022 14:22

Just caught a bit of the trailer. Looks promising!

CocoPlum · 18/12/2022 14:31

Three standout moments in the acting/writing for me:

  • when she's told about Anne being kidnapped and asked not to tell and she gets straight on the phone to report it.
  • when the detective arrives to investigate, it's someone she used to work with. They greet each other and in about 2 words their tones/expressions/body language/pauses tell a whole back story. How the actors did that i don't know.
  • when she chases the other policeman at the end of season 2. Both of them are struggling with the running. There was no superhero chasing, just a middle aged man and woman struggling for breath.

Everything about the writing and acting is so spot on.

TottersBlankly · 18/12/2022 14:33

If this is the final, final, final season - are we speculating that Catherine will die?

I'm hoping it's prison for Catherine for killing Tommy. I don't want her to go through all that and get killed.

TottersBlankly · 18/12/2022 14:42

Wouldn’t death be preferable to high security incarceration for a previously blameless, late middle aged professional woman? Police, too …

TwoMonthsOff · 18/12/2022 14:43

It is excellent and I loved Joe Armstrong (son of Alun) as Ashley….so handsome too, one of the best series ever made I think

Threadkillacilla · 18/12/2022 14:55

I see your point Totters but she's too strong to die. I hope* *

Southeastdweller · 18/12/2022 14:59

Just three episodes in this new series. Anyone know if they're all going to be available at once?

Whitwhit · 18/12/2022 15:03

Another one who has just rewatched Series 1&2 in prep for this.
It’s so harrowing but so bloody good.
I didn’t realise this series was only 3 episodes.
I want a neat and tidy, but not necessary legal (!) resolution.

Threadkillacilla · 18/12/2022 14:36

I'm worried about this too. Killing her would be such a cop out. I RAGED when they did that to Cassie in Unforgotten when she was about to retire.

TottersBlankly · 18/12/2022 16:16

It’s Cassie + ‘retirement’ that’s worrying me!

longtompot · 18/12/2022 16:32

@CocoPlum I agree with your first two, not seen to the end yet so I don't know about the last one. I wanted to add its scene like the opener for series 2 when Catherine and her sister are sat on the back step chatting about the day, having a fag and telling her about the sheep rustler. It was funny and dark all at the same time. Just perfect writing being told by perfect acting.
