THE WHITE LOTUS - s2 MONDAY 9pm sky Atlantic. TV PACE. NO SPOILERS

So lotus is back

s1 was good. About holiday makers in a posh hotel and one died but various other things

quite funny

worth watching s1

there is a thread. Not by me s one

s2 is new cast and a new secret apart from jennifer Coolidge who returns as Tanya along with her lover now hubby

This season, Coolidge's hysterical and hyper-sensitive Tanya McQuoid will be joined by Jon Gries, who reprises his season one role of Tanya's lover turned new husband Greg, and Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of Seventeen) who plays Portia, her assistant. Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), and Adam DiMarco (The Order) portray Bert, Dominic, and Albie, respectively, three generations of men from the Di Grasso family with three very different approaches to the opposite sex on a trip to Sicily to visit their ancestral home.

Also checking in are two polar opposite couples on vacation together: the prickly, newly-rich, and socially aware Harper and Ethan, played by Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Will Sharpe (Landscapers), and the carefree, news-averse, lovey-dovey couple Cameron and Daphne, played by Theo James (The Time Traveler's Wife) and Meghann Fahy (The Bold Type). The separate groups are intertwined when two local girls Mia (Beatrice Granno) and Lucia (Simona Tabasco) find their way into the White Lotus, much to the chagrin of Valentina (Sabrina Impaciatorre), the often flustered manager of the hotel.

Ditto never seen godfather

I would recommend watching the godfather. Not to sound too much like a sleazy Hollywood guy and his old dad, but you should watch it if you haven’t 😂

I feel like this white lotus is looking at masculinity and how men get away with behaviours they really shouldn’t. Someone up thread said the previous one was about how rich people are protected and get away with shit, maybe this one is how men get away with shit by owning the narratives of power? (That’s the link to the godfather trilogy)

The godfather is probably one of the best films ever mad

I think I’m in a minority here and whilst the story is engaging I’m not as engrossed as series one.

Good to see each character really has their faults laid out (some more than others) but they really are all hideous. Are people really that naive though? Do they really put up with all this behaviour, sometimes from total strangers here, on a holiday?

I find this series is very much more one dimensional, sticking to stereotypes and not the varied tapestry and characterisation of series one (at least the put upon son got his happy ending there).

I’m obviously a bit of a prude because so much sex, so much drug taking! Im exhausted! Im surprised Tanya didn’t overdose!

I preferred S1 too

But I am enjoying this

1Sky · 08/12/2022 19:03

I love the flawed characters in this

I always gets everyone's name wrong but that scene when Ethan was imagining his wife having sex with Cameron was so real it was excruciating. Could almost picture the Mumsnet thread on that scenario...

I am finding this one slightly more real than the last one - maybe because it is more about sex/men and the other one was about wealthy folk!

WhathaveIdoneagain · 08/12/2022 22:14

I miss Armond from S1 😢 But I like this season, too.

Workerbeep · 08/12/2022 22:37

I could still relate to more of the experiences/scenarios in series 1 despite the wealth: the hypochondria of the husband of the successful workaholic wife, the internet writer thinking she was way better than she was, the children-one ignored son the other sister was an entitled pain. I did even have some sympathy for the guy on his honeymoon; as the hotel was really at fault with the double booking.

I thought there was more light relief too. most of the relationships were so tragic they were cringingly funny; the poop in the suitcase before the tragic end and the romantic dinner/Tanya spreading her mother’s ashes trip.

That’s just reminded me of how annoying Tanya was and how after so much badgering she flippantly dropped the masseuse. Just awful I really do not care for her character at all.

this season just feels like titillation.
the only funny part has been the Italian women telling the grandad (he will always be Salieri in Amadeus to me!) and son and grandson where to go: but that was fleeting.
They are all quite tragic and one dimensional.

maranella · 09/12/2022 10:00

I didn't like Armond in S1. He was a ridiculous caricature who reminded me of Basil Fawlty and no way would such an unstable character be in charge of a luxury hotel. Valentina isn't great either tbh - she's too frosty with the guests - but I think her sadness is easier to relate to that Armond's smarmy craziness.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2022 10:47

I did think Tanya may have od but seems from the below spoiler that she’s alive in s3

sodhe isn’t one of the dead

I do like finding out till last episode who died

1Sky · 10/12/2022 06:58

There's an article with Will Sharpe who plays Ethan in the Times today

Roundlampshade · 10/12/2022 07:04

How would you feel if the dead guests were random guests we hadn’t been introduced to and subsequently had no attachment to? Would you feel irritation? Ie a bit like Midsomer Murders when the killer turns out to be a completely new character brought in at the end.

Alternatively, Armand was a single character and had no one who was directly impacted by his death so we didn’t see his family mourn him,

This series, which hotel guest would we least care about? Greg. Then who?

TottersBlankly · 10/12/2022 08:16

So it appears there are no people of visibly Black African or Caribbean descent either resident in Sicily or able to afford the hotel? And they’re not even good enough to be employed on the island or at the hotel? Hoping I’ve missed or forgotten a few major characters - otherwise I’m sadly disappointed in the writers and cast director.

Like a poster above I’m not finding this season as compellingly intriguing as the first. The ‘formula’ just makes it a whodunnit this time, rather than a haphazard story with novel characterisations and relationships and a completely unpredictable plot - as in S1. And it’s prompting a much narrower range of emotions (in this viewer, at least) - little laughter, almost no truly shocking moments, so far.

That said - it’s a fabulous who-will-do-it-?.

Tanya has seen a gun - let’s hope she uses it.

Guess everyone’s read this already, on who might die:

www.indiewire.com/2022/12/white-lotus-season-2-who-will-die-1234776934/amp/

Off to gaze upon the unspeakably gorgeous Mr Sharpe in The Times. (Finally an unarguable justification for my subscription …)

maranella · 10/12/2022 08:50

Re: the gun. There is a 'rule' in drama, that if a gun is introduced in Act 1, it should be fired in Act 2. It's called Chekhov's Gun. So I'm thinking that gun will be fired in the next episode. At whom is the question!

TottersBlankly · 10/12/2022 08:53

@maranella We know!

Grin
Blondeshavemorefun · 10/12/2022 09:03

Sicily is a notoriously racist part of Italy - I don't think it's unbelievable that a fancy hotel wouldn't have black guests or staff sadly.

TottersBlankly · 10/12/2022 09:20

Yes, @CloseYourEyesAndSee, Italy is … a thing. (Bitter experience.) But I’m pretty sure Black American tech entrepreneurs’ money can buy the same hotel rooms as anyone else. And Prada doesn’t refuse their wives’ credit cards if they’re not white. And, if anything, given what we know from S1, it wouldn’t have been at all unlikely that Tanya’s PA might be black. Unless Jack is a paid up member of the EDF it wouldn’t have changed the story at all.

EachandEveryone · 10/12/2022 09:55

Im shocked that some of you have never seen The Godfather!! Even after not watching it for years I still practically know it word for word. A young Al Pacino is not to be missed🙂

TottersBlankly · 12/12/2022 10:28

So … No one’s watched the finale yet? Grin

I’m dithering between getting stuff done first and worrying about being ambushed by spoilers before I’ve seen it.

Excited though!

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 12/12/2022 10:32

Yep!

Not what I was expecting

GetUsedToTheHeatAgain · 12/12/2022 10:33

TottersBlankly....I have watched the final episode!

of course I will give nothing away and will not spoil anything.......But boy you will all enjoy it!

The 2nd series grew on me as we went along, think I too prefer S1 thought the humour was better, but having said that I still really enjoyed S2.

Enjoy everyone, enjoy!

TottersBlankly · 12/12/2022 12:00

Watched …

Yeah …

Wonder what they’ll bring in S3.

Netaporter · 12/12/2022 13:19

Also watched. Thinks may not be how they seem methinks…
