I’m totally confused about what Spider is supposed to be doing.

Spider is an undercover cop, he's infiltrated the far right gang. I assume to stay "in" with Griff and remain undetected, Spider carried out the paint attack on Speed Daal. He may have also done it so Griff didn't do anything worse (or made Max do it).

I am often baffled by actresses who play characters like Beth and Mary. You can just imagine the conversation:
'So every now and then, you are going to be wheeled out to play a total bitch/halfwit. That ok with you?'

I mean, where is their professional pride and ambition?! They're not proper actors at all.

TBF, most Corrie men have to play halfwits fairly often.

Apart from Tyrone, it's a fulltime job for him.

I thought Kirk was married to Beth. She works... in the factory, although doing what, I've not figured out yet. They don't seem to have banks of machinists anymore.

Dsis and her partner are actors, they have struggled for years trying to get parts, sometimes a good year, sometimes nothing so working in call centres to pay the rent! They would give anything for a regular, highly paid job on Corrie, however silly the character, and I suspect so many other actors feel the same. Although I agree, characters like Mary must read their scripts and go "WTF....."!
