The Crown: season 5

Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

I don't think Michael Sheen has ever played Charles has he? He's best known for playing Tony Blair several time, including in The Queen.

Bertie Carvel is Blair in The Crown but not sure if he makes an appearance this season as I've only watched 3 episodes so far.

Yes!! He was Blair.

I got confused.

The RF have such unusual voices. The queen was so high pitched one could have
Cut glass with those dulcit tones

Most of this lot haven't captured them which is a shame

hallowedweens · 09/11/2022 19:49

Claire Foy and Josh o'connor are my faves in the Crown

Weonlyhavealoanofit · 09/11/2022 20:01

I don’t really understand all the ‘outrage’. There is a film about the RF which was commissioned by the RF, and edited by them and which they have now withdrawn from public view…it was supposed to be Prince Phillip’s great homage to the firm. Why don’t they re release it for the sake of balance? Oh I forgot, they weren’t happy with it, it took away the ‘mystery’. One day this institution constructed via a Walter Scott dystopia married to an adoration of Queen Victoria’s decades long, self serving hysteria will be examined by mental health experts as a v dysfunctional circus. In the meanwhile we have The Crown, a harmless, watered down version of the real thing.

Bored with the Al Fayed episode 😂

ShillyShallySherbet · 09/11/2022 20:21

My 70 year old mum doesn’t even realise it’s fictional so I do think it needs a disclaimer. We were having a discussion about the royal family the other day and she was going off on a rant about how awful Charles is and I asked how she knew such detail about him and what he’s like as a person she replied “I’ve watched the crown” I laughed until I realised she was being serious!

Aw I loved it! I wanted to give him a hug!! 😹

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 09/11/2022 20:31

The whole ‘it’s not real, it’s fiction’ is a bit weird imo.
What other living person has a totally fictitious film made about their life?
Each character is a real person but the storyline is completely made up.

If it is just one dramatised tabloid story why are the RF not suing? A libel case maybe?

hallowedweens · 09/11/2022 20:46

Jonathan Price is nothing like Pheeeeleeep

I loved the whole valet story. I hope it's true,

Charles was never that attractive!

I think my long standing crush on West (since The Wire) is going to be ruined!

Southeastdweller · 09/11/2022 20:58

Worst casting for the RF of all the rotations, I think. Only Elizabeth Debicki is right in her role. I agree about Dorothy Atkinson, but I guess the producers wanted more of a 'name' - nothing against Lesley Manville, who's a superb actress.

DeeofDenmark · 09/11/2022 21:08

Episode 5 needs a trigger warning, some very upsetting scenes but I guess it must have happened like that.

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 21:08

I think this series is actually quite flattering to the RF! I mean, they can't omit the affairs and Camillagate tape but the characters come across well

Which bit? I've just watched in and can't remember but that might be because I've binged them all

Honeynutcheerios · 09/11/2022 21:15

On what planet has Dominic West been cast as Charles? Dreadful!

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 21:16

Coming back to suggest stephen mangan as Charles. Dominic west is far to sturdy and strong looking and also handsome! Queen mother casting is just silly. Pryce is also so wrong. How has the casting changed so much.

DeeofDenmark · 09/11/2022 21:16

@geraniumsandsunshine i don’t know if we are posting spoilers so I’ll say the Romanov family posing for a family picture.

Honeynutcheerios · 09/11/2022 21:17

The problem is that the actor who played Charles in 3 and 4 was excellent, and BOTH actors who have played Philip have been exceptional. So Jonathan Pryce and Dominic West just pale in comparison.

diana is great, as was the previous actress

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 21:20

@DeeofDenmark I think you mean episode 6 having just started that

Madeintowerhamlets · 09/11/2022 21:36

I’m up to episode 5 & enjoying it more now. I take a pp point about Diana basically being a bit of a caricature anyway. Not buying Dominic West as Charles though. I enjoyed the Dodi valet storyline. I’m hoping some of it is true!

Jonaskahnwaldplease · 09/11/2022 21:38

I think the actor playing princess in series 5 should have played princess Margaret in series 3 and 4. Helena Bonham Carter just played herself as per usual.

LuluBlakey1 · 09/11/2022 21:40

Natasha McElhone, Olivia Williams, Elizabeth Debecki are excellent. I am surprised by how good Dominic West is and Lesley Manville is very good.

Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce are miscast - both look too old physically and Imelda Staunton has none of The Queen's better features. Facially she is nothing like her at all and portrays her as a horribly-dressed, small-minded misery who takes little pleasure in anything.
Philip was still very fit and active at the time and Pryce makes him look quite doddery and old-manish.
The woman playing the Queen Mother is dreadful in every way- appalling.
The actress playing Princess Anne has portrayed her rather as she is portrayed in 'The Windsors'- I was waiting for the atmosphere to freeze around her.

hallowedweens · 09/11/2022 21:42

None of them are posh enough
