The Crown: season 5

Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

Ah cross post!

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 09/11/2022 13:29

Watching now! Much preferring this new cast.
Hated the Olivia Coleman series.
Imelda Staunton version of the Queen is very hoity-toity but on the whole I'm enjoying it so far.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 13:47

It's interesting to watch it and remember (or realise, depending on how old you are!) just how big Diana was. I don't think any other member of the royal family has matched her for star power since. Kate seems nice enough and dresses well but she doesn't have the star quality her late MiL did. I don't know what it was about her but she had a certain something.

I'm on episode 4. They've spent an awful long time on Mohammad Al Fayed. I'm not really feeling it this season.
I don't like Imelda Staunton as the Queen...she doesn't have her spirit, or personality....that twinkle in her eye. I just keep seeing Dolores Umbridge, and seeing her as a mean spirited woman.

I agree re Dolores Umbridge, but casting a critics eye I wonder if tha has actually a positive to the series as the 90s weren't a good time for the RF. So they aren't meant to be as likeable

Hopefully most people would realise it was fictionalised but who knows?

You really think so ? I don't think they will, unless they were around when those things happened. Younger viewers will, I suspect, think it's all gospel truth .

I think it's disgusting to make a show like this, about people who are still alive. I hope nobody watches it.

Charles is that you?

diddl · 09/11/2022 13:58

Has anyone seen all of it?

Is it as Diana-centric as the trailer?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/11/2022 14:02

Charles always comes across badly in The Crown, I sort of hope he isn't quite such a terrible person as he's portrayed to be, especially given he's now King!

I've only watched two episodes but am enjoying it so far.

Who were the couple who's daughter died? Relatives of Charles?

cathyandclare · 09/11/2022 14:15

I’ve enjoyed it so far, fine with most of the casting, Elizabeth Debicki is particularly nailing Diana’s doe eyed looks and general physicality- but Lesley Manville and the actress playing the Queen Mother are physically totally wrong.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 14:15

They were the Knatchbulls @Girliefriendlikespuppies. Lord Mountbatten's grandson and his wife. He's now the Earl.

Al Fayed stuff is boring. Hating the new Margaret and the new Anne isn’t as good as before, but she was a stand out for me.

OldTinHat · 09/11/2022 15:03

I'm halfway through E7 - no, I have nothing better to do but have told myself to go for a walk before starting E8!

Not quite sure what to make of it but, keeping in mind it's a drama, I'm glad Queenie is coming out of it so well.

Casting of Philip and Charles is a bit off but, again, it's not real! Diana is very good as are the young William and Harry.

I'm enjoying it and will be cursing myself later that I binged it!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2022 15:06

I’m intending on watching it all today. Set aside the whole day to do so.

Seeing the High Sparrow as Prince Philip is totally weird. Apart from Johnny Lee Major I’ve not seen the other actors in anything.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 15:22

Johnny Lee Major 😂

Seeing Sick Boy as John Major is very distracting.

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 16:29

Michael sheen would have been a much better Charles

Not sure about Diana! E.D.is going a OTT with the eye thing but she has the same stature and the voice is good definitely.

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 09/11/2022 16:31

Agree the Queen mother is being played by the totally wrong actress.

Whataretheodds · 09/11/2022 16:40

The thing about Diana is that she WAS a caricature. Watch videos of her being interviewed - the videos of her talking about the marriage - it's hard to believe that's a real person.

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 16:43

@cathyandclare Dorothy Atkinson might have been a good Margaret.

JubileeTrifle · 09/11/2022 17:28

Queen Mother is dreadful. I can’t believe there wasn’t a better choice.

RoachTheHorse · 09/11/2022 17:38

Jonathan Pryce just sounds and looks like Jonathan Pryce to me.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2022 18:38

Michael Sheen was Charles in the movie. Maybe he wasn’t up for round 2.

cathyandclare · 09/11/2022 18:43

Dorothy Atkinson is a good call, although Lesley Manville's acting is winning me over. She doesn't look right but the performance is fabulous.

What film was Michael Sheen Charles in? I knew him when I was a teenager, but I still always see him as Tony Blair!

MissAmbrosia · 09/11/2022 18:54

Ooh didn't realise it started today!

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 19:18

I don't think Michael Sheen has ever played Charles has he? He's best known for playing Tony Blair several time, including in The Queen.

Bertie Carvel is Blair in The Crown but not sure if he makes an appearance this season as I've only watched 3 episodes so far.
