The Crown: season 5

Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

If you can enjoy watching a fictionalised account of a mother die and be buried which you know this will cause untold pain to her living sons, then watch it. I cannot fathom how Netflix think this is entertainment when her sons have made it v v clear over many years that it hurts. And has caused mental health issues to both of them.
Hate the royalty but these are real people lives that are being trashed. I know many people who believe every scene and conversation and think it's exactly as it happened.

Seriously? Because I don't know anyone who thinks it's 100% historical truth! Then again, I tend not to be friends with stupid people.

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2022 15:15

😂 so you don't believe any of it ? Just watch it as a drama ? With the names and details of real people.
I'm sure H and W will be pleased to know that your enjoyment of an innocent drama is nothing to do with the death of their mother. Sure that will help them so much.

I believe the bits that are obviously real, I don't believe the conversations / stories are exactly how those real events panned out, neither does anyone I know who watches it (and I was only 20 when S1 aired, young people still have common sense).

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 24/10/2022 15:29

It's like the Kardashians and other reality tv in a way, I watch that but know full well it's all a load of bollocks for the cameras and a true representation of real life.

Oh aren't you all superior. Netflix have quite purposefully set out to make it as close to real events as possible. Its therefore not unsurprising that some people are confused about where the (intentional) blurred lines are.
I've loved the previous series but I'm in the camp of finding this a bit distasteful. I'm no royalist but W&Hs mother died in terrible circumstances and to have that dished out as entertainment leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 24/10/2022 15:30

*NOT a true representation!

ZombieKettle · 24/10/2022 15:39

I think Olivia Colman is a brilliant actress but she just didn't have the gravitas when she played the Queen. I think Imelda Staunton will though.

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2022 16:46

@PanicAtTheBigTesco the Kardashian's agree to having their lives dramatised. The Royal family don't. And have made it v clear that they find it hurtful to have painful moments in their lives made into entertainment for others.
Love to know which bits are 'obviously' true and which bits are made up. Were you there ?

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 24/10/2022 16:49

@mumsneedwine that's why I said 'in a way', I was referring to it not all being truthful.

And no I wasn't there but I'm pretty sure The King died, The Queen was coronated, she had her kids, The Smog happened, Aberfan etc etc

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 24/10/2022 16:55

@mumsneedwine also please can you link to where Harry has said he doesn't agree with it? All I've ever seen is him saying it's obviously fictional and that he doesn't think it needs a disclaimer?

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 24/10/2022 16:56

@KillingMeDeftly hopefully when it actually starts we can start a new thread which can be enjoyed by those wanting to watch Smile

KillingMeDeftly · 24/10/2022 17:02

I agree @PanicAtTheBigTesco! Those wishing to discuss the ethics of the series should head to the ongoing thread in the royal family section https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/theroyalfamily/4652275-the-crown-next-series

Harry has said repeatedly how he thinks fake press coverage killed his mother. He has yet to say he hates the Crown, I imagine because he is being paid phenomenal amounts by Netflix.
Both of them have said they never want the interview aired again (Netflix gave dramatised it). And how any false press speculation affects them.

It didn't take one brain cell to know how much this must hurt. Empathy is a useful life skill.

mumsneedwine · 24/10/2022 17:04

I will leave. If you can watch a programme about someone dying knowing it will cause pain, then I will never understand you.

KillingMeDeftly · 24/10/2022 17:09

We are discussing, or trying to discuss, season 5 where no one is going to die.

The Crown is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I'm looking forward to it. It's fictional to some extent but I've learnt a lot about historical events and characters from the past (prime ministers especially) from being interested by the way they are portrayed on this.

Do we have a release date?

Yes I sit googling the whole way through! I've learnt a lot.

On Netflix 9th November Smile

PollyDarton1 · 26/10/2022 12:06

Ah amazing @PanicAtTheBigTesco - not long to wait!

My browser tabs are full of historical figures, and I've ended up reading so much about them. It sometimes takes a fictional portrayal for me to become invested.

PollyDarton1 · 26/10/2022 12:07

Sorry meant to say thank you as well @PanicAtTheBigTesco x

Me too. I've learned a lot about historical figures as a result of googling because I'm watching the show

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 09:16

Watching episode 1 of season 5 now! Elizabeth Debicki looks very like Diana in the first shot of her.

I was just wondering whether to start a new thread or not!

I've got to wait for DP to get home before I can watch any, I've also got 2 tax exams coming up so I'm going to have to be restrained and limit myself to 1 or 2 episodes a night!!

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 09:33

Fortunately for me my DP has no interest whatsoever in the series!

I assumed he wouldn't and watched the first 2 series without him, then he saw a clip online and fancied watching it so we went back and re watched S1&2 and now he's a bigger fan than me Grin
