Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

Started watching episode 1. Don’t want to give anything away but sadly I agree with the reviews so far. The performances seem quite wooden to me, the metaphors laboured & I found myself feeling quite bored at points. I wonder if it’s partly because more recent events have been dramatised so much so it feels a bit stale. Interested to see what others think!

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 10:56

Season 4 was the best casting. Shame they couldn't have just done some aging on those cast members. Jonathon Pryce is so so wrong but season 4 Prince Philip was perfect.

Kaftankween · 09/11/2022 11:02

Yes Jonathan Pryce seems rather aged. Especially as I’m on episode 2 which is the beginning of his er friendship with Penny Knatchbull.

LarryandLeon · 09/11/2022 11:03

Yes I agree about the casting in season 4, I particularly loved Emma Corrin as Diana. I feel like Elizabeth Debicki has nailed the voice & mannerisms but it’s bordering on charicature. Shame as season 4 was so good.

Kaftankween · 09/11/2022 11:06

No idea why my post has been hidden. I said Pryce was a bit elderly looking.

Kaftankween · 09/11/2022 11:30

Also Natascha McElhone playing Penny Knatchbull and talking about grief after all she has been through personally.

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/11/2022 11:33

Watching this makes me realise how far we have come and not in a good way. We don't seem to have 'normal' prime ministers anymore with regular backgrounds. John Major went to a state school, as did Margaret Thatcher. Now it's all multi millionaires.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 11:43

I think Pryce is only a few years older than PP was at the time the Crown is set, although he was always very active for his years and certainly he and the late Queen both looked a lot more sprightly than Charles does at the same age.

Kudos to the makeup department for John Majoring Jonny Lee Miller to the point where he's identical!

I’ve just started watching.

I appear to fancy John Major.

Send help!!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2022 11:49

Oh, it’s Johnny Lee Miller!!

I’ve fancied him since Trainspotting.

Kaftankween · 09/11/2022 11:56

Why are you hiding my innocuous posts mumsnet?

I was just wondering whether to start a new thread or not!

I've got to wait for DP to get home before I can watch any, I've also got 2 tax exams coming up so I'm going to have to be restrained and limit myself to 1 or 2 episodes a night!!

I have just finished my tax exam for this year. Good luck for yours.

I will start watching at the weekend since I have a bit more time

ChillysWaterBottle · 09/11/2022 12:07

I'm super looking forward to it, but sad about the bad reviews. I wonder if the quality has dropped or people are just being weird about it for some reason this season. Going to start tonight!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2022 12:19

I’m on the second episode.

How long until John Major takes his shirt off?

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 09/11/2022 12:27

Thanks @tigger1001 fingers crossed for us both! Judging by the date is that CTA you have just done? Whatever it was I hope you have a nice relaxing weekend Smile

Looking forward to some chill out time this weekend so this has come at the right time!

magicstar1 · 09/11/2022 12:55

I'm on episode 4. They've spent an awful long time on Mohammad Al Fayed. I'm not really feeling it this season.
I don't like Imelda Staunton as the Queen...she doesn't have her spirit, or personality....that twinkle in her eye. I just keep seeing Dolores Umbridge, and seeing her as a mean spirited woman.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2022 12:19

I’m on the second episode.

How long until John Major takes his shirt off?

Maybe there'll be flashbacks to some sizzling sessions with Edwina Currie 🤣

StarShapedWindow · 09/11/2022 13:02

I’m on episode 2 and I don’t like how they’re portraying the Queen. In series 1-4 she’s been portrayed as a sensible, no fuss type who remains professional all the time. In series 5 she seems so petulant and a bit spoilt. I’ve never read her described this way.

I can’t believe Johnny Lee Miller is John Major! Who will pay Edwina Curry? Sienna Miller? 🤣

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 13:06

I'm onto 2 as well and finding Jonathan Pryce more like the current King than the duke of Edinburgh.

Natasha McElhone is very good as the grieving Penny Romsey. It's nice to see her onscreen again and of course she's no stranger to grief herself.

I expected the thread to be fuller. Was it only released today?!

Is this series starting over? I don't understand how they are young again?

KillingMeDeftly · 09/11/2022 13:16

Season 6 only dropped today. Not sure what you mean by them being young again, unless you're referring to a flashback.

OP posts:
Hugasauras · 09/11/2022 13:19

It's season 5 and it's the 90s, they aren't young. Imelda Staunton is playing the queen. Sure you aren't looking at season 1 again?!

StarShapedWindow · 09/11/2022 13:20

There was a flashback in the first episode of the new series lasting about 5mins. Then the Queen was 65.

Hugasauras · 09/11/2022 13:21

Ohhh episode 1 starts with a flashback, is that what you mean?
