It needs some warmth or humour. I don't like anyone yet apart from the Matt Smith character looking like he could develop.

the Brothel scene was so gratuitous.

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2022 12:00

Loved it! We had subtitles on so we know who's who.

Wouldloveanother · 24/08/2022 12:01

I enjoyed it! Initial thought:

So the king passed on the prophecy of the long winter/white walkers to his daughter, but clearly she didn’t pass it on well enough as Daenerys had no idea about it in GoT?!

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 24/08/2022 16:12

Aerys died before Dany was born, Viserys was only seven, and their father was as mad as toast, so it's not surprising that the prophecy chain would be broken then, if not before.

LoobyDop · 24/08/2022 19:56

It must have been broken earlier than that- Maester Aemon didn’t know about it.

MuddlerInLaw · 25/08/2022 22:34

I am still annoyed about the title of this series.

There was no need for four words - particularly when one is a definite article that makes no sense in the context. All the publicity boasts of the many dragons in the show.

House of Dragons would have been so simple.

GOT. HOD. Why, why, why did they fail to do this perfect and obvious thing?

🙇🏻‍♀️

Been a while since I rewatched but I don’t think Maester Aemon was ever an heir to the throne ?
So he wouldn’t know as the prophecy was only passed to the next named by the king heir.

I don’t think Deamon knows the prophecy either as he wasn’t actually an heir unless the current king announces it. (He just assumed he would be king as his brother only had a daughter)
Which is why at the end there was a ceremony announcing the heir and allegences sworn.

LockInAtTheFeathers · 26/08/2022 18:06

I think I remember a conversation in the books where Jon is told that Maester Aemon turned down the role of king? I think he was a younger son of the king but the throne still reached him.

EpicGem · 28/08/2022 22:37

There's a few points in the Targaryen history between the Dance of dragons and Robert's Rebellion where the chain of passing the prophecy on could have been broken. I think the Summerhall tragedy 40 years before GOT was where it broke as the fire from trying to hatch a dragon's egg killed both Dany's grandfather and his heir. The following kings would have had no one to tell them the prophecy.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 28/08/2022 23:07

I personally disliked the idea that the Targs had this secret prophecy which never appeared in the books. But then there were so many prophecies. Why not?!

Aemon did not seem to know this prophecy, but I feel Bloodraven would. Even before being The three-eyed raven.

I have reread The Rogue Prince, and The Princess and the Queen. I wonder how far they get this season...

It is a much more brutal storyline in the books than GoT, so it should be interesting. Technically Daemon is meant to be the most charismatic Targ that ever lived...

Just want to check, is this spoiler free and at TV pace...before I read the thread! Thanks 😊

Just checked the thread and you’re fine.

Omg loved hearing that music again at the beginning… although it is my ringtone 😝

Robin233 · 29/08/2022 10:31

Just watched episode 2
Loved the opening
Really starting to get in its stride

GinandTonic1975 · 29/08/2022 13:08

Great 2nd episode and hearing the title music nearly had me in tears!

ClaudineClare · 29/08/2022 13:16

I really enjoyed episode 2 and agree it was fabulous hearing the theme tune again!

MuddlerInLaw · 29/08/2022 13:52

I’m watching on Now TV. When will Ep 2 have been watched by most people?

Oblomov22 · 29/08/2022 18:00

Watched episode 2. Thought it was ok, just.

IconicKitty · 29/08/2022 18:29

I thought episode 2 was quite uneventful.

ShesNotTheMessiah · 29/08/2022 19:17

I don't mind uneventful. Some of the best GoT episodes were uneventful. But they had gripping dialogue that you couldn't help but listen to.

HotD doesn't have the same dialogue quality, which is a real shame. It meant I found my mind wandering durng the talking scenes instead of being drawn into the story further.

Hopefully it'll get better as actors bed in and characters flesh out.

MuddlerInLaw · 29/08/2022 19:23

I found my mind wandering durng the talking

Absolutely. It was disconcerting because I don’t remember that happening during GOT.

And there was at least one conversation I found completely unconvincing.

Hawkins001 · 29/08/2022 19:27

From those that have watched it, who are the main characters, and their loyalties ?

MuddlerInLaw · 29/08/2022 19:30

This should help:

WhathaveIdoneagain · 29/08/2022 20:20

I find House of the Dragon truer to the source than GoT. It is all about politics and power.
HotD is Succession with dragons and gore.

Main characters:
Viserys Targaryen, king
Aemma Arryn / Targaryen, the late queen, Viserys's first cousin, half-Targaryen herself
Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, heir
Prince Daemon Targaryen, the King's brother
Otto Hightower, Hand of the King
Alicent Hightower, Queen-to-be
Corlys Velaryon, The Sea Snake
Princess Rhaenys Targaryen / Velaryon, The Queen that never was, Corlys's wife and by blood the highest ranking Targaryen
Laena Velaryon, their daughter
Ser Criston Cole, newest recruit to the Kingsguard
Ser Harwyn Strong, member of the Small Council. He advised Viserys to wed Laena.

Their alliances are shifting and it would be a spoiler to reveal their final allegiances.

There are a lot of characters who have not appeared yet and will have major roles.
This story covers decades and in some cases we do not even know what happens to them.

FawnDrench · 29/08/2022 22:13

Well, a bit predictable tonight, hasn't quite got the "oomph" factor as yet, but hopefully things will improve.
I agree it's missing the comedy element and the dialogue isn't as cutting or "clever" as GoT was.

Why haven't we seen anything of Daemon's wife?
Presumably she lives at least in the same vicinity / with him?
I find this a bit strange.
