Neighbours: for people who haven’t watched it for 15 years?!

As an original fan from the 80s/90s who hasn’t watched it in years, can anyone give a brief synopsis of current storylines so I get what’s going on in the final week?!

OP posts:
YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 24/07/2022 19:17

I’ve just watched the last two weeks so I can be more up to date for the last episodes. Rarely watched since mid 90s, but I did dip in and out of it since the first lockdown, never enough to be sure who everyone was though.

What struck me watching the last two weeks is how stunningly beautiful (and samey) all the girls are who haven’t been on for a while but are coming back - did they go through a stage of casting clones?? Paige and the girl who declared her love for Chloe are interchangeable. And Elle is stunning too.

Thank you so much for that synopsis! Really helpful! I think I stopped watching around 1998 so actually more like 25 years!!! 😮

You're suffering from that phenomenon common to people old enough to remember the 90s, the firm belief that the 90s were only about 10 years ago 😃

IamupInSpaceMan · 24/07/2022 21:49

Thank you all for the various explanations and whoops re Jim Robinson, (I don't remember him dying.) I saw him in 24 the US show with Kiefer Sutherland I think anyway 😂

IamupInSpaceMan · 24/07/2022 21:51

I meant the actor who portrayed Jim Robinson of course...

whimsicalwillow · 24/07/2022 23:30

Is this the last week of Neighbours? Thought it was way in the future. Used to be about 6 months behind Australia on BBC

cordiate · 25/07/2022 08:24

Madge is making a ghostly appearance apparently!

They're doing a great job bringing back all these characters.

Rockbird · 25/07/2022 08:29

I haven't watched it since about 1990 so I've got a lot of catching up to do but I'll be watching this week. Quite excited actually.

MrsMigginsCat · 25/07/2022 08:30

I used to be a massive Neighbours fan bit stopped watching when it moved to Channel 5. I've just set the last week up to record as well. Maybe they'll start repeating it from the beginning again on an obscure channel now?

It used to be, but they have a Christmas break in Australia and it’s off the air for a few weeks over there, so after almost 40 years (!!) we caught up.

Another one who has just started watching again! I think I must have stopped around 2000 and have now watched the last couple of weeks.

I was surprised to see Rebekah Elmaloglou in Neighbours - I remember her as Sophie Simpson in Home and Away thirty years ago!

It’s both nice and odd that there are so many old characters back/still in it. In some cases scenes were entirely made up of old characters so it was almost like watching it from thirty years ago except everyone looks much older! Except Harold who doesn’t seem to have aged at all.

LIZS · 25/07/2022 12:24

@NooNakedJacuzziness A Country Practice takes me back! Flying Doctors, Sons and Daughters and The Sullivans too! The actors seemed to rotate between them! There were other animals than Bouncer in Neighbours though.

autienotnaughty · 25/07/2022 12:51

I fancy watching the end. I can't remember when I stopped watching. I remember billy Kennedy (Jesse spencer) leaving and I think I remember a millennium episode so around 2000!!

Rockbird · 25/07/2022 12:53

I loved the Flying Doctors, think I loved that more than Neighbours at one point.

I’ve just looked up Ian Smith (Harold)- he’s 84!! He’s aged very very well.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/07/2022 14:19

And don't forget The Young Doctors, that was my favourite @LIZS - happy times coming home from school to that one!

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2022 14:20

Me

just watching now

lovely seeing the old characters I knew and watched as a 12yr now all old 😂

loving the flashbacks of Harold’s wedding Des stag do.

tobee · 25/07/2022 14:22

Didn't Jim turn up as a ghostly hologram in a car rear view mirror or something when Paul was having some sort of crisis?

I used to hate Jim. He was such a boring strict dad. And profoundly unattractive in his pastel polo shirts.

Sons and Daighters too!

Anyone remember that awful bar that all the Young Doctors used to go to called "Bunny's"? All peopled by men and women in bizarre seventies times warp clothes.

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 25/07/2022 14:27

I seem to remember GhostJim as well! Maybe it's a collective hallucination.

Thanks so much for the summary @LIZS. I will can now enjoy watching the final week without confusion.

I do hope that in the last few minutes they reveal that the entire 35 years was a dream by Bouncer, and then they all disappear, poof, like that.

LIZS · 25/07/2022 14:45

Ah yes Young Doctors, there were some cute young actors in that!

ChessieFL · 25/07/2022 14:49

I don’t remember GhostJim. I do remember GhostBobby in H&A, coming out of the fridge door to scare Ailsa.

NewCatName · 25/07/2022 15:22

I haven't watched neighbours for years and like many here started watching the last couple of weeks. I too couldn't believe how old Plain Jane super brain looked. Omg when did we all become so old? 😆

Where to start...?! Lots of oldies have reappeared over recent months. Paul is getting divorced (again) from Therese who is with his half brother Glen who has a daughter Kiri. Toadie is marrying Melanie but is the love interest of Amy who has a daughter Zara but has gone away in embarrassment. Two of Paul's sons Leo who runs a vineyard and David who was a doctor but now struck off are contemplating moving their families to USA with Paul and many siblings. The Kennedys have been rocked by reappearance of son Mal and his new partner Izzy with whom Karl had had an affair and daughter way back. Kiri currently with Jane's daughter Nicolette who is co parenting with David and his husband Aaron. Jane was with Clive but recently split up. Harold has returned for a visit. The Ramsay Street history book got damaged so is being remade with help of past characters. No.24 is up for sale but who will buy...?

Any reappearance of Karl and Susan daughter Libby I believe ?

Hawkins001 · 25/07/2022 16:51

Then, I think it was Joe Mangel, and lou, I think his name was
