I heart Kevin McCloud.

I don't understand these people who piss off their neighbours with these builds and then live in them. Surely it makes life so much more difficult if your neighbours hate what you're doing from the outset?

Remember the violin factory one and the London Chamber Orchestra? I can't imagine living next door to people who hated me that much.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/01/2008 21:22

I know, conserve the beauty of Cheltenham

Can I have double glazing - nope

Can I paint the house white - nope

Can I take the railings down - nope

Can I build a polystyrene and plastic house in the back yard and piss off all the neighbours - yep

ViolentFemme · 16/01/2008 21:22

Getorfmoiland - you'll need to go and scope it out tomorrow and let us know how hideous it really is!

olihan - yeah I remember that one. Wasn't there a problem with the colour of the bricks?

Yes - go and knock on the door, shriek mumsnetters think you're 'orrible, and run

expatinscotland · 16/01/2008 21:24

they needed the £600,000 bridging loan because there was £300,000 in the brown envelope to the council.

gees, zoe, maybe people don't like to see another house in their backyard. ever thought of that?

Olihan · 16/01/2008 21:27

That's the one VF. They nearly had to pull down the whole back wall just because they thought they were better than everyone else. They were very objectionable people.

Not unlike tonight's couple......

expatinscotland · 16/01/2008 21:28

Question for those who've watched previous seasons of this series (because I haven't): do they ever feature couples for whom things have really gone tits up and they actually lose a bunch of money?

Or is it always tickety boo at the end?

Lauriefairycake · 16/01/2008 21:28

their "compact master bedroom" looks bigger than my house

looks about 25 by 18 approx

But you know, it includes an ensuite

Heathcliffscathy · 16/01/2008 21:29

i actually cannot believe they got it.

so i'm really pissed off with having a mortgage, do you think my council will let me build a thing in my back garden so i can be mortgage free?

ffs.

MarkStretch · 16/01/2008 21:30

So when they sell their original house, the new owners will have to live with those fuckwits in their back garden?!?!

Heathcliffscathy · 16/01/2008 21:31

fuck moodboards...chandefuckinglier extractor hoods!

[thunk]

katyt1 · 16/01/2008 21:31

sometimes the people do massively overspend and don't get tobe mortgage-free or whatever, but they always love their new house as far as i know.

not sure about this one tbh!

i mean it may be greener to live underground but think of all the lights you will HAVE to have on ALL the time???

Olihan · 16/01/2008 21:31

Expat, there was one several series ago with an absolutely barmy bloke building a house with a wing shaped roof and all these other mad ideas. Everything that could go wrong, did. In the end it took 3 years I think and cost WAY, WAY more than the original estimate. I think when they did the revisited programme there were parts that still weren't finished but they'd moved in anyway as they'd been living in a caravan in the garden during the entire build.

That was the biggest disaster I remember.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/01/2008 21:31

i like the Grand Designs where the people put blood, sweat, tears and real love into their builds

Not when the owners are rich arseholes determined to make a pile more money, and sod everyone around them

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/01/2008 21:32

olihan - did that one ever get finished?

katyt1 · 16/01/2008 21:33

what about access as well? will they have to walk/drive through/past their old house?

would you buy their house?????

expatinscotland · 16/01/2008 21:33

Well, no one's going to go on the revisit and admit it's been a total disaster, there's no bigger fools than they and they spent so much money they'll be working till they drop, though.

Olihan · 16/01/2008 21:33

The most recent revisited one from there it wasn't. I don't know how recent it was though. You'd hope it was finished by now, that one was from about 2003!

expatinscotland · 16/01/2008 21:34

Especially when they want £600,000 for their old place, katy!

annh · 16/01/2008 21:35

What an absolutelu classic night for property programmes on C4 - first Relocation and now Grand Designs! Did anyone notice however that the next door neighbour whose pictures fell off the wall when they were pile driving in the garden, also looked as if he lived in an ultra-modern house?

Lauriefairycake · 16/01/2008 21:35

Do you remember the one with the log cabin in the woods- it was just perfect - totally environmentally friendly (had straw walls) and only he was allowed to live there as he was a coppicer.

very Hansel and Gretel

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/01/2008 21:35

do you reckon you would get 50 grand off due to having arsewipes as neighbours?

Lauriefairycake · 16/01/2008 21:36

They said at the planning meeting that there was another built down the road.

so they weren't the first
