Charlie was a smoker back then too....and you could smoke in certain areas of hospitals. Most wards had a smoking room and I remember going into a&e and ut being a fug of cigarette smoke.

Fladdermus · 20/03/2023 17:37

First ever episode. Charlie was driving a yellow VW Beetle. I was very jealous.

Optimist1 · 20/03/2023 19:16

I, too, have watched Casualty from the start. I wonder if Charlie's saint-like reputation originated because back then, male nurses were something of a rarity. A man in a caring role was much more remarkable than his female counterparts.

LIZS · 20/03/2023 16:39

When did he acquire a Landrover instead of his crappy old Ford?

I know!

and how can he afford it, when we regularly have SLs about nurses low pay - the most recent being about Robyn.

plus, why does a single pensioner living in a city need a Land Rover?

TrashyPanda · 20/03/2023 20:21

That’s a good point, @Optimist1

i think Tess was the only female Nurse in Charge (or whatever it is called)

maybe it’s time for another woman to take the reins?

can anyone remember any female lead doctors other than Connie and Baz?

Zoe was Clinical Lead wasn't she?

AnImaginaryCat · 20/03/2023 20:55

Found a list! Zoe was lead. Also Elle and a character called Miriam who I don't recall by name alone.

AnImaginaryCat · 20/03/2023 20:58

Also list of clinical nurse managers. Three females; Tess, Linda and Rita.

holby.fandom.com/wiki/Clinical_Nurse_Manager_(emergency_department)

TrashyPanda · 20/03/2023 21:10

Good sleuthing!

many thanks.

I do remember Miriam now - she wasn’t there for long.

I think Elle was only Clinical lead for a short time when Connie was ill. she and Dylan each took a shot and both hated it

MadisonAvenue · 21/03/2023 01:55

Are we going to get several new characters? The dept is a bit light on nurses now, I wonder if we’ll now see the agency nurse back again who was in it a few weeks ago?
Can’t remember what her name was but one of the doctors asked who she was and it seemed odd at the time when she was essentially an extra.

SNWannabe · 21/03/2023 01:57

They’re all going to be striking… so Casualty episodes will be like MOTD the other week- just half an hour of shots of the waiting room filling up with patients and no nurses or junior doctors to be seen…

AnImaginaryCat · 21/03/2023 13:31

There's a extra who plays a nurse. Male with grey hair in a short ponytail. I'd love to see him brought into it as a main character for no reason other than the fact he has been in it for ages.

Pretty sure we heard his name before, I just can't recall it.

Doubleraspberry · 21/03/2023 14:22

The bit where Charlie tripped over with grief was quite realistic in that he looked like someone who falls over quite often. Not necessarily someone ideal to be working in a fast-faced medical environment.

TrashyPanda · 21/03/2023 22:56

@AnImaginaryCat I think that nurse is called Wayne. He’s been in it for years.

@Doubleraspberry - I quite agree. Charlie spends an awful lot of time leaning on anything handy. There’s no way he could work a whole shift in a busy ED. Or even in one that was nearly empty. He’d be missing his afternoon nap.

purpleme12 · 22/03/2023 00:31

As if 5 nurses would just walk out like that!

Ballsaque · 22/03/2023 07:15

I’d forgotten about Duffy’s shite accent in the early years 😂

I can’t tell who is a worse actor,Duffy or Charlie

Has Marty actually left or will he back next week?

We’re going to need loads more characters.

TrashyPanda · 22/03/2023 12:02

I quite liked Duffy, back in the day. Apart from the accent, her acting was ok.

but - when they brought her back, seemingly for the sole purpose of getting together with Charlie, her acting was just awful. Every single line spoken as if she was speaking to a toddler. Or maybe that was a side effect of living with Charlie?

AnImaginaryCat · 22/03/2023 12:58

Inspired by talk of old I watch an episode on YouTube.

Nicholas Holt was in it! His first TV appears it seems.

Did make me nostalgic for the old format of concentration on several different groups of people (building up to an accident) with a bit on staff interactions. Rather than mostly about staff and their families.

DaisyStarburst · 22/03/2023 15:21

If they've all left, I think I'm done with it.

SgtCatherineCawood · 22/03/2023 17:46

I was wondering if Marty might come back as agency but wiki says it was his last appearance

TrashyPanda · 22/03/2023 19:38

So we’ve definitely lost David, Marty and Robyn.
so that just leaves Faith and Jacob.
not counting Charlie, cos he would be as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Quia · 22/03/2023 22:16

That's quite a clear-out. Time to draft in nurses from elsewhere in the hospital with A&E experience, e.g. Lofty?

SgtCatherineCawood · 22/03/2023 22:19

Just caught up for the first time in weeks. I wonder if the cast think it's going the same way as Holby and are jumping ship. With Ethan a few weeks ago that's a lot of cast gone now!

TrashyPanda · 22/03/2023 23:01

It would be great to have Tess return.
she was one of the all-time best characters on Casualty.

Presuming you mean nurses! I mean I liked Tess too, but let's not forget Jeff and Dixie, and of course Joss.
