Just wondering if anyone has watched the entire series 4 and wanted to discuss it or the ending ?! ......

JanisMoplin · 01/05/2022 21:11

I just finished. WTF was that ending:( Can we discuss or should we wait until more people have caught up?

Harridan1981 · 01/05/2022 21:12

I think as this has spoiler in the title we are safe?!

JanisMoplin · 01/05/2022 21:13

Also Laura Linney and Julia Garner deserve all the Emmys.

JanisMoplin · 01/05/2022 21:25

Well ok then. WHY kill Ruth just when she gets her pool and house and clean record? I suppose there was no other way to go with the Langmore story arc but it was so heartbreaking. And poor Three!

Found it rather unconvincing that Mel Sattern would turn up without a weapon to confront the Byrds. He isn't that stupid.

I guess they had to go that way to show how the Byrds are now all as bad as each other and the Kennedys of crime. Though Laura Linney is such a good actress she made me feel sorry for her, hate her and despise her in one episode. That courthouse scene with her dad!

foxlover47 · 01/05/2022 22:23

I did write spoilers so think it's safe to discuss it :)

@JanisMoplin I agree ! I have always disliked Wendy but seeing that version of herself on the steps promising to be good was so sad to watch ! What a cruel nasty man her dad is!
I was angry about the way they did Ruth like that , she was like a angel at the end in her long flowing white dress :(
Why couldn't they of just let he be

OP posts:

Binge watched 3 of 4. Final episode left to watch. Found all 3 disappointing.

DarleneSnell · 02/05/2022 01:48

Just stayed up to finish so glad to see this thread and rant a bit. Spoilers ahead!

Very disappointed. Feel like it plodded along with an underlying tension while we waited for something explosive... which never really came. We were sat there thinking the boat might blow up at the end, with Ruth disembarking just in time to see it and go WTF, but it just seemed to trail off - except for Ruth's totally unsatisfying ending. The only part that was rushed!

On reflection It didn't need 7 episodes, way too much focus on Wendy's dysfunctional annoying family - again! - and the kids rebellion, plus Ruth's daydreaming. Perhaps if it hadn't dragged out so much I'd forgive the lacklustre conclusion but overall it fell way below my (admittedly very high!) expectations.

Question (spoiler) why was Navarro still taken out, given Camila knew he hadn't killed Javi? I got the impression they'd been very close. Belated sibling rivalry just took hold??

JanisMoplin · 02/05/2022 07:45

Ruth appeared to have a deathwish. She could easily have driven away or tried to drive away when she saw the black Cadillac, instead of getting out and standing meekly there. Perhaps she was tired of running.

After thinking about it, the end was foreshadowed and inevitable. The Byrds had to come in like Ozark saviours and end up destroying everything in their path. I don't think they will escape that easily though because Camila will likely be even more demanding than Omar.

@DarleneSnell I think Omar Navarro was taken out because Camila just could not resist the prospect of being cartel boss with an FBI deal on the side. Gosh, she was terrifying.

Inkanta · 02/05/2022 09:43

I got the impression Camilla was already out of the car, but yes I wish Ruth had reversed away. Very sad. I liked her final words to Camilla - courageous and no bullshit to the end.

Ginger1982 · 02/05/2022 09:58

I was gutted that they killed Ruth but after all those scenes of her interacting with her dead family, I thought it might happen. I think Jonah shooting Mal was a nice throwback to season 1 (I think) when he couldn't shoot the man who broke into the house so Buddy ended up doing it. But the fact that Marty and Wendy seemed quite happy to nod and smile while watching their child commit a murder was quite chilling.

JanisMoplin · 02/05/2022 10:07

The shot of Marty and Wendy smiling as Jonah shot Mel was of course key. To show that they tried to escape the Ozark over 4 seasons, but never will now because they are equally tainted. Jonah was an innocent in season 1 but now he is a mini-Marty and Charlotte is just as ruthless as Wendy.

The other key scene I think is when Marty cold bloodedly allows Ruth to be killed, even though Wendy tries to intervene. When push came to shove, the Byrde family always comes first even if everyone else has to die ( and they did!).

I did like quite a few scenes
Ruth's brave farewell speech
Ruth and Rachel's friendship was lovely
I liked the battle over the children; thought we saw a whole new side to Laura Linney. What an amazing actor she is, as is the actor who played her dad.
The scene with Ben in the car with Nelson just broke my heart. So clinical.

I don't think DH would have stuck by me if I had murdered my sibling! Marty's love for Wendy is a bit baffling.

Inkanta · 02/05/2022 10:24

Yes it looked like Jonah got the corrupt bug in the end, with the parents blessing, killing a man for no good reason. The guy had no gun and was only there to speak some truths. It was a bit late at night.

Had hoped Marty and Wendy in the end would stand up to Camilla and the Cartel. Wimpish to the end - only capable of road rage and beating up a guy in a car. They're shackled to Camilla for good now.

Valhalla17 · 02/05/2022 10:31

@Inkanta he wasn't there to just speak truths though....he had the evidence in his hands! So Jonah didn't kill him for no reason.

Was really sad about Ruth, wanted her to win and have a good life after everything....but it was kindnof inevitable Sad

JanisMoplin · 02/05/2022 10:45

I think the evidence in the cookie jar wasn't damning; it just proves Ben was dead. That said, I can understand why Jonah shot Mel. Years of stress building up and the family just lashing out at whoever got in their way. Once they conspired to kill or overlook the killing of Ben, everybody else was just roadkill.

Am posting too much here but this series just really fascinated me. S 1 and 2 were much better than the latter seasons, but still great overall. Especially loved the fabulous women of Ozark: Wendy, Ruth, Helen, Darlene, Camilla, Charlotte....

DarleneSnell · 02/05/2022 10:46

I didn't think it was believable that Jonah was prepared to blow someone's head off to save parents he'd been disloyal to all season. What a change of heart!

I think Ruth's death was a shame but it was more the way it happened. She just stood next to a cartel car and waited for it. No attempted from Marty to intervene, or even look upset about it. Wendy reacted more strongly. Sort of undermines 7 series of the Marty-Ruth relationship, which I thought was kind of paternal. He was far more troubled by the death of Arturo, a viscous cartel scumbag he didn't even know!

I think there were too many side plots and filler scenes. They could have cut some of the flashbacks/daydreams, and all the Ben/PI/Maya stuff and it wouldn't have been missed. I'm not sure what I would have wanted, and definitely didn't expect a "happy" ending - but it was too abrupt an ending vs a very slow build-up.

Inkanta · 02/05/2022 10:46

Yes he had evidence to convict. I was thinking when Jonah shot him he wasn't shooting in self defence, and also I would have tbought Jonah, who was upset about Ben, would welcome the evidence. More reason to believe Jonah was finally corrupted.

Thisisit2022 · 02/05/2022 10:56

I really enjoyed this last series. I was totally wrong about one thing though, I always thought Ben was still alive and in the scene where they showed how he met his end I was shouting at the screen, "I KNEW he was still alive"...but I was wrong.

I think the ending really worked. Camila couldn't resist running the Cartel. Family meant nothing. Ruth had to die. The Byrds will never be free of crime, there's no way out. There's always some other consequence to their previous crimes...in this case Jonah is now a killer and Charlotte an accessory. I think they could have done a lot more with them though. (I sense a spin off).

I always think back to how it was Marty who got them all into this by one stupid decision while working in a dull, financial job and not that long after he's sitting with Mexican drug lords.

foxlover47 · 02/05/2022 11:04

@DarleneSnell I wondered that , I thought the only reason camilla would of carried on with the hit was if she didn't believe him about Javi , unless there was no way of calling off the hit in time because she became focused on killing Ruth ?

OP posts:
DarleneSnell · 02/05/2022 11:08

@foxlover47 honestly DH and I were sat there like, oh shit the Navarros know the Bydres have played them off against each other! We were convinced the Navarros had united against the Bydres and shit was going down. But no, badass Omar just let that slide and was shot as planned even though that no longer made sense. Gah!

foxlover47 · 02/05/2022 11:10

See Marty shocked me , he had constantly tried to save Ruth ( aside from when he threatened her into getting the kids back ) but it really was a shock to me that Wendy cared more when it came to trying to stop her being killed !
I too had hoped that Ben was really alive , and that Ruth even if Ben wasn't would get some kind of decent ending , new house , Rachel as her true good friend etc , she still never ran her mouth about Marty and Wendy right to the end to camilla , she was like a angel in her floaty white dress
Do you think they would of gone back to Chicago after Jonah shot mel or would they of ended up staying there

OP posts:
foxlover47 · 02/05/2022 11:11

@DarleneSnell yes this !! Totally frustrating !! I was waiting for something big as revenge ...
camilla was a great character .. she played her so well she gave me chills

youngestisapsycho · 02/05/2022 11:14

Poor Ruth… she was my favourite of them all 🙁

foxlover47 · 02/05/2022 11:16

I'm
Not sure Jonah would of shot Mel if he knew that his mum and dad had stood by and let Ruth be killed either
