Just wondering if anyone has watched the entire series 4 and wanted to discuss it or the ending ?! ......

It all fizzled out, didn't it? Totally underwhelmed and I LOVED the first 3 series .

See Marty shocked me , he had constantly tried to save Ruth ( aside from when he threatened her into getting the kids back ) but it really was a shock to me that Wendy cared more when it came to trying to stop her being killed !
I too had hoped that Ben was really alive , and that Ruth even if Ben wasn't would get some kind of decent ending , new house , Rachel as her true good friend etc , she still never ran her mouth about Marty and Wendy right to the end to camilla , she was like a angel in her floaty white dress
Do you think they would of gone back to Chicago after Jonah shot mel or would they of ended up staying there

I think there was a sense of Ruth never getting out. It was important for her to "own a piece of this town" and I think she'd be like a fish out of water anywhere else. She was emotionally tied to the land by the lake and wouldn't know how to be a rich person anywhere else.

I'm not sure Jonah would of shot Mel if he knew that his mum and dad had stood by and let Ruth be killed either

At this point I think he still would. By now Jonah and Charlotte both understand the rules of the game and that there was literally no option or they would have been killed themselves.

Inkanta · 02/05/2022 11:22

Yeah not a very satisfying ending, and there's no one left to care about, even if there was another series. Ruth was the star of the show - she was trying to get her life clean and back on track. They could have brought back Ben for a happy ever after ending! 😊

I love a real ending like this though. So much better than tying up loose ends neatly.

The actress who plays Camilla also plays a major character in Queen of the South (also named Camilla IIRC). Which is another drug themed Netflix series that I've really enjoyed.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 02/05/2022 16:00

I kind of wanted some sort of redemption for them at the end, but I guess they’re in far too deep for that.

Gutted for Ruth - wanted to see her swanning about her big lakeside home, and swimming in the pool with Nelson at the bottom of it.

After that last scene they probably all sat down for a lovely home cooked dinner. Loved the
juxtaposition of their corruption and criminality with freshly prepared family meals.

Yes, Camilla near the end of the programme said she expected Marty back in Mexico (and he and Wendy nodded in agreement), and I thought - god what perjury - going back to that god forsaken house and prison cell. Awful existence but they're in too deep. Wish they'd had the courage to take Camilla out and set themselves free.

DarleneSnell · 02/05/2022 16:36

I thought they might as well call in the hit against Camila and make a run for it with both her and Navarro gone. It's not like the other cartel lot would know it was them - or particularly care?! I guess they'd still have the FBI to deal with though.

I think I'd have chosen the devil I knew and stuck with Navarro, using Ruth's money. Wendy was uncharacteristically reckless bringing Camila in, the woman who raised Javi 🤯

foxlover47 · 02/05/2022 17:02

Yes I too would of stuck with him , they knew what to expect with him and camilla had already taken a hit out on him before in prison that they hadn't known about.
They don't deserve to swan off back to Chicago and be happy , I would really hate for them to be free after Ruth was killed especially.
And Mel also.
What did you all make of Navarros priest ?

I loved every minute of it and am in the minority for loving Wendy's bad ass personality. I wanted her to kill her no-good father. Laura Linney should get another Emmy for her performance in this season.

But I do feel they shouldn't have killed off Ben so early.

DashboardConfessional · 02/05/2022 23:18

Loved it!

A couple of people have said they are effectively stuck with Camilla but the whole point is that they aren't. No more laundering money. They go off and run their foundation via donations, some of which would come from Shaw Medical when it was profitable again due to the Navarro drugs. I think one of the reasons Claire spoke up, other than being a wet lettuce, was that she knew the Byrdes were about to piss off to the Chicago suburbs and leave her to deal with Camilla.

Yes 'foundation' and 'donations' was mentioned a few times - but doesn't quite compute in my mind how that works. Sounds a good intention but they seem in bondage still with scary Camilla/Cartel who summoned Marty to Mexico again.

NippyWoowoo · 03/05/2022 09:27

Whoops, I had no idea part2 had been released (for someone reason thought it would be a long wait?) and so opened this thinking it was an old discussion 😢

Inkanta · 03/05/2022 09:32

Ooh look away from this spoiler thread Nippy🙂

WhyPaulMemory · 03/05/2022 10:40

I think it was a fair-enough ending - it was unlikely that Ruth was going to get clear of everything and she had to know that killing Javi was going to have consequences at some point. I did prefer the earlier series as my favourite aspect of the show was the relationship between Marty and Ruth, and since that broke down I felt Marty became a bit of a background character. Slightly unlikely that Jonah would have come to the rescue given everything that went on, but then I suppose it shows his final corruption. The show had some amazing characters and performances (Julia Garner is just so excellent), and at least it didn't go the GOT/Lost route of an ending that everyone hated. Slightly sad that it's over now!

I've just scanned 3 recaps and I really can't find where she said this. Omar did, when he was setting up his Mexico prison break. The whole point was that they were going to have enough money and political clout to get out, with the agreement of the FBI.

DashboardConfessional · 03/05/2022 11:16

Sorry, I know I am labouring this but I believe the ending was supposed to be "look at how these horrible corrupt people have succeeded" and not "The Byrdes are now cartel puppets for life".

BillStickersIsInnocent · 03/05/2022 16:00

I didn’t think they’d be cartel puppets for life, but that they will always be expecting exposure of any of their crimes and therefore ready and willing to kill or corrupt in order to protect themselves. That’s what I meant by in too deep.

Especially with the ever-present risk that Clare will someday expose their involvement in Javi's death to Camila!

Yes I think you're right! I didn't sense they were safe from the cartel - still a lot of fear, and I thought Camilla asked Marty to come to Mexico (in their last conversation).

SunnyShiner · 03/05/2022 22:32

I'm sure camilla said to Marty he needs to go back to Mexico.

I'm cross they killed Ruth off, she was an excellent character. I did think that apart from the last two episodes this second half was too slow and boring though.

newnamethanks · 04/05/2022 09:48

Ànd now, all that land and money belongs to - who? The State? Did Ruth make a will when all the legal tidying up was happening ? And what about The Baby? Is he the legal owner? And who's got him ?

Ruth's.next of kin would be Three, surely?

newnamethanks · 04/05/2022 11:49

But The Baby, Zeke?, was Darlene's 'adopted' son, so should have inherited if anyone had remembered him? And Three will be in there v Wendy vying for adoption rights and control of the dosh. Series 5. Roll it out. Will miss Ruth though, she was a fantastic character and played by a qreally impressive actress.

JanisMoplin · 04/05/2022 12:01

This is the last series. There is no series 5
