Are there any actors that you will watch things just because they are in them?

I've realised that Toni Collette is one of those actors for me, I'll give something a go even if it's not my usual thing because she's a good actor and also seems to have sound judgement of what's a good script/idea. I've just started watching Pieces of Her and it seems pretty good so far (one episode in).

Also Joshua Jackson, although I haven't watched The Affair yet. And Susan Sarandon, although she's around much less these days.

People who put me off a bit are Melissa McCarthy, she's a really good actress but she's agreed to star in some terrible stuff so I always make sure it's going to be worth watching before I give it a go. I find Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis and Jason Bateman vaguely annoying in almost everything so generally discount anything they are in.

Jason Watkins.

giggly · 11/03/2022 17:45

Yup, Stephen Graham he’s an absolutely underrated actor.

Neversaygoodbye · 11/03/2022 17:45

Nicola Walker, loved her since Spooks.

LaWench · 11/03/2022 17:47

Michael Sheen

Letsnotargue · 11/03/2022 17:50

Andrew Scott
James McAvoy

Spaghettio · 11/03/2022 17:52

Toni Colett (sp?)
David Tennant
Olivia Coleman

Only recently realised I'm going for Christine Baranski too.

topcat2014 · 11/03/2022 17:54

Suranne Jones forgets vigil
Jon Simm

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/03/2022 17:56

The trouble I have with James McAvoy is that he's always James McAvoy acting really well. He conveys every emotion fabulously, he's full of power and quietness when needed but he's always James McAvoy underneath. Whereas Toni Collette seems to totally disappear into her character.

Michael Sheen is always amazing but for a while he was in EVERYTHING so he wasn't in himself necessarily a good guide as to whether a thing was worth watching.

Olivia Coleman. Judi Dench. Idris Elba. Rupert-Penry Jones. Nicola Walker.

Will avoid anything in which the ghastly and over-rated Suranne Jones appears.

Jason Statham

I know he can't act but if I want mindless nonsense, Jason's the man.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/03/2022 18:00

Jason Statham is always an indication of a fast paced action film with a cohesive but not too taxing plot. And he actually looks as though he can fight in the fight scenes (unlike Tom Cruise).

Chiwetel Eijiofor is another that I love to watch. His voice is so wonderful that I'd probably listen to him read a telephone directory the whole way through.

Lesley Sharp

ShowOfHands · 11/03/2022 18:02

Since seeing Cyrano de Bergerac on stage, I'd watch anything McAvoy does. He is mesmerising. I'd never really watched him before.

Olivia Colman and David Tennant. Nicola Walker. Yes to all three.

Victoria Wood once upon a time.

TheLoupGarou · 11/03/2022 18:02

Michael Fassbender
Josh Hartnett

Even if it's a load of shite I still watch Blush

ShowOfHands · 11/03/2022 18:02

Oh and Heath Ledger was shaping up to be one to watch.

Samcro · 11/03/2022 18:03

Ryan renolds

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/03/2022 18:03

Oh yes, Victoria Wood. She had such a light touch, and she was really good in serious stuff too like Housewife, 49.

I'm with you on CE. Also Harriet Walter, Samantha Morton, Paddy Considine. On stage, I will literally see anything with Simon Russell Beale in it.
Thewindwhispers · 11/03/2022 18:06

If Nicole Kidman isnin something I know I’ll probably enjoymit - guess we have aimilar taste.

If Chris Hemsworth is in something I’ll probably enjoy it but for completely different reasons.

Twicklette · 11/03/2022 18:09

Tom Hollander. Another mesmerising actor

JanisMoplin · 11/03/2022 18:09

Totally agree with Toni Collette and Olivia Colman.

My own picks:
Laura Linney
Hugh Laurie
Christine Baranski
Paul Giamatti
Sandra Oh ( though latest Killing Eve is horrid)
Ruth Wilson

dudsville · 11/03/2022 18:11

Will Smith, whether serious or a comedy or sci fi.

Tom Hanks, again in anything.

JanisMoplin · 11/03/2022 18:12

I think I like character actors rather than big stars. I can't watch Nicole Kidman in anything any more because I can't get over what she has done to her face. Laura Linney on the other hand, every wrinkle shows and I love it.

Ohmnomnom · 11/03/2022 18:12

Jamie Dornan because he's beautiful.

Stephen Graham because he's amazing in everything.

Joaquin Phoenix because he picks really good roles.

I tried to watch everything Jason Momoa starred in, but 90% of his work is utter garbage.

Ohmnomnom · 11/03/2022 18:16

I also like to search for other work by directors I like. Yorgos Lanthimos is one of my favourite directors and I love all of his movies.
