Are there any actors that you will watch things just because they are in them?

I've realised that Toni Collette is one of those actors for me, I'll give something a go even if it's not my usual thing because she's a good actor and also seems to have sound judgement of what's a good script/idea. I've just started watching Pieces of Her and it seems pretty good so far (one episode in).

Also Joshua Jackson, although I haven't watched The Affair yet. And Susan Sarandon, although she's around much less these days.

People who put me off a bit are Melissa McCarthy, she's a really good actress but she's agreed to star in some terrible stuff so I always make sure it's going to be worth watching before I give it a go. I find Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis and Jason Bateman vaguely annoying in almost everything so generally discount anything they are in.

Olivia Coleman. Have a big big crush on the woman.

Another vote for Gillian Anderson.

Some of her roles have been so good I've barely known it was her tbh. She mesmerises me.

Oh! Matthew Goode 😍

I'm so glad someone has finally mentioned him. He's very watchable.

Especially when he's doing an Irish accent...

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/03/2022 20:02

Gillian Anderson
John Simm
Tom Burke
David thewlis
Christine baranski

Joan Cusack elevates any old shite that she's cast in. Love her.

It's funny, OP, but I was talking to my DP last night about how irritating I find Toni Colette and that avoid anything she's in. I have no idea why this is though!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 11/03/2022 20:13

@WheresThatCatGoneNow or playing a vampire.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/03/2022 20:18

Ooh! Now you're talking, AnneShirleysNewDress!! 😈😍

Saorise Ronan, I absolutely love her and I've seen just about everything she's been in and I don't think I've ever been disappointed.

Meryl Streep, she's been in so many strong roles and I think she's classically beautiful.

Cate Blanchett is a wonderful actor as is the wonderful Toni Collette.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/03/2022 20:24

And Tamsin Grieg, of course.

Such a classy lady - she's even in The Archers!

Thinking of her has reminded me of Green Wing, which, in turn, has reminded me of Michelle Gomez - another brilliant actor that we don't see enough of.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/03/2022 20:26

Yes, Nicola Walker, Rory Kinnear, Gillian Anderson. I think I'd watch anything with Catriona Balfe in, but I haven't seen her in anything except Outlander.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/03/2022 20:27

And Lesley Manville! I loved her in 'Mum'.

I'm going to stop now, because I could probably carry on all night listing actors

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/03/2022 20:28

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

Jason Statham is always an indication of a fast paced action film with a cohesive but not too taxing plot. And he actually looks as though he can fight in the fight scenes (unlike Tom Cruise).

Chiwetel Eijiofor is another that I love to watch. His voice is so wonderful that I'd probably listen to him read a telephone directory the whole way through.

Chewitel Ejiofor's voice is amazing. Having said that, I listened to his audiobook of Piranesi and it was really dull.
