I'm cautiously optimistic. He looks right and it looks suitably nuts so it might just work!

I’m a big Jack fan and I’ve spent many hours contemplating who could play him properly (TC is no JR) and actually he looks similar to the Jack in my head! I’ll look forward to watching this to see if it’s anything like the books 🤩

Huntswomanonthemove · 07/02/2022 13:28

@BIWI

Of course he's clean cut - he's ex-army!
Yes but in the books he is of no fixed abode, so much less clean cut.
Sidge · 07/02/2022 14:29

In the books he always made a point of showering, always carried a toothbrush, always made time to get a shave and haircut. Always made a point of eating when he could and filling up on coffee!!

I pointed out to DP that in the books he rarely drove as he didn't actually hold a license so I agree with @BasiliskStare there.

Also did anyone else notice in a flashback to when he was a boy the date was 1998? Reacher was born in the early 1960s I think so they seem to have had to jump him forwards by 20 years to get him in his 30s in 2022!

They've definitely set it in current times - he uses voice controls to find motels in the car at one point! I was dazzled - he's not known for his tech skills! Grin

I nearly missed this because I assumed it was TC again - what a disaster that was. I am a massive Jack Reacher fan and I agree with pp's that the ones his brother has written are very disappointing. I'll leave it a few years and start again from the beginning.

I've only watched one episode of the series but I think it's great. I loved the "death stare" outside the diner.

BasiliskStare · 07/02/2022 15:49

I enjoyed it ( the Amazon series ) and just a thing - I am sure TC has the money to bankroll the film and play Reacher but really, did he not get he really was not Reacher.

I think I read that Lee Child just accepted the TC film - because money is money - but I suspect he realised that he didn't go down well with people who had read the books. TC was no Reacher . So the film could have been good but for the millions of people who read his stories TC was no Reacher - I suspect the streaming Amazon one will be more popular than the film. ( & I also think Lee Child laughing all the way to the bank - but fair enough - he tells stories people want to see or read )

FredBair · 07/02/2022 15:54

The one thing I would say he seems to use a phone and drive more than the books say

I noticed that, but Killing Floor was the first book and mobile phones were barely a thing when it was written. Reacher did progress a little in later books, I think it reasonable to update it.
I remember one book in which he had to drive in London. Comments about "driving stick" which became a Reacher joke thing with me and DS.

BasiliskStare · 07/02/2022 16:10

@FredBair - fair point I agree with that Flowers It does amuse me when a manual gear box is referred to as a shift stick - I am old & I was allowed to drive my mother's car - it did not have synchromeshed gears - but am sure reacher could have coped with double de clutching. I did & I was a teenager. Grin

oldwhyno · 07/02/2022 16:17

4 eps in and it's not perfect, but so much better than the Tom Cruise films for me. It's lower budget, less well written, directed and less well acted, but all that is waaaaay more than compensated for by the fact that this Reacher is soooo much closer to the book Reacher than Tom Cruise was ever going to be able to pull off.

MissConductUS · 07/02/2022 16:25

When the movie studio licensed the rights, I doubt they gave Lee Child control over casting decisions. I doubt he was thrilled about that absolute tosser Tom Cruise being cast as Reacher.

I did find the cameo, thanks for the hint @deeplyambivalent. Smile

Rosebuud · 07/02/2022 16:38

I thought it was ok, not great but not bad, I can’t make my mind up about the actor, he’s the right shape and size, in the books they describe how muscular he is, and I recall one talking about his muscles being like huge walnuts due to his tan and how they stood out.

But he looks too young for me, irrelevant of actual age, he looks about mid to late thirties max, and I’d have put reacher, in my head as late forties, but he is in fact the right age, as in the books reacher leaves the army at 36.

It’s also very close to the book, so they have kept faith there. I thought cruise had bought all the rights, so he must have sold to allow this to be made?

I’d say it’s a million times better than the Tom cruise efforts though. I think he neglected to understand quite how important Jack reacher and his image was in it.

Huntswomanonthemove · 07/02/2022 17:10

Yes Reacher is absolutely the reason for reading the books. Women love him I do and men want to be him. Casting Tom Cruise was a travesty.

BasiliskStare · 07/02/2022 17:15

@Huntswomanonthemove - I agree that Tom Cruise was a travesty - but I think I read once he bought the rights . So if I am right - enough money get's you what you want to do - what it does not buy is other people liking it Grin

BasiliskStare · 07/02/2022 17:16

@Rosebuud - cross posted there - I too thought TC had bought the rights to the books to be made into films - but even he must have seen his version did not go down very well

ELCismyspiritnana · 07/02/2022 17:32

I also thought at first he was a bit too “pretty” for the character as described in the books and young looking. However, then I thought how in the 80’s and 90’s even into the 20’s the fashion for men was slim and well groomed and more even featured. It’s only recently the chiselled muscular (almost boxer/mma look) has become mainstream attractive so he would have been perfect for the written vision I think. I also noticed the big time jump to his 1998 childhood which jarred, but they had to do it really otherwise he would be a 60 year old hero or it would be an historic show.

Not quite all the way through yet, but for a first series (hopefully of many) I think the actors has done really well with the role and suspect he will be more comfortable with it as time goes on. (Also on the walk I noticed that and can only liken it to my BF who’s ex military and walks like that. I wonder if it’s deliberate to affect a straight up “I’m used to marching” walk?!)

Campervan69 · 07/02/2022 18:33

I love it. Want them to churn them out as quickly as possible please. There's loads of books.

MissConductUS · 07/02/2022 18:35

It's possible that TC just bought the rights to do feature films with the character. The Amazon series will never see a theatrical release. This article doesn't mention him at all.

Campervan69 · 07/02/2022 19:19

Yes that was definitely Lee Child in the diner.

Cocolapew · 07/02/2022 19:26

I'm starting this tonight, I was a massive fan of the books but one was so awful a few years ago I haven't read one since.
I have high hopes after reading these reviews 🥳

PeakyBlender · 07/02/2022 21:47

Why does he have black tape on the back of his jacket?!

Cocolapew · 07/02/2022 21:49

@PeakyBlender

Why does he have black tape on the back of his jacket?!
To cover up the rip where he was knifed. I've watched 2 and love it.
Dithercats · 07/02/2022 22:03

Ooh just realized I can watch prime via Alexa in bed.
Thank you just started this series. Love the books

Huntswomanonthemove · 08/02/2022 08:30

I’ve just realised what it is about this actor playing Reacher. To me he looks like an android and behaves like one. He doesn’t bring any personality to the role.

Deauville12422 · 08/02/2022 09:50

I finished watching it last night.

Reacher wasn’t what I imagine him to be like but I really enjoyed watching it and hope they make more.

Think I might read some of the books again. Can anyone remember the title of the book that has a photograph in the plot that readers never find out what it is of? I Googled but I couldn’t find which book it was.

HenriettaTriceratops · 08/02/2022 10:01

I just saw on Twitter that there is a series 2! I wonder if they are going to do all the books and in order?
