I'm cautiously optimistic. He looks right and it looks suitably nuts so it might just work!

Which episode was the cameo in? There were a lot of scenes in the diner.

beccy11 · 06/02/2022 21:31

Have binge watched this weekend and it's full marks from me! A fantastic 'Reacher' he looks like Reacher and has the mannerisms
Much better than the film adaption- just waiting on a series 2 now

Last episode, @MissConductUS

HenriettaTriceratops · 06/02/2022 21:55

I just watched the first one and really enjoyed it. Definitely close to the Reacher in my head. Trying desperately not to binge it all in 1 go!

Binge watched on Saturday evening. Loved it. We are currently watching it all again. At a more leisurely pace.

@Ionlydomassiveones

I’ve never read the books so it doesn’t matter to me so much that he ‘matches’ the literary character. All I ask as a tv viewer is that he can act, he is believable and bring some life and charisma to the part. Unfortunately this one is a dud. Despite the efforts of the ensemble cast, why cast the main character with an actor so robotic, so lacking in emotional range that you don’t actually care about him? He doesn’t act and has no screen presence. The child version is more well drawn. Soooo disappointed. Thank God for the Tom Cruise version.
Interesting from someone who hasn’t tread the books so no pre conception. I’m loving it- just 2 episodes left. I did think he was a little robotic at first but then he grew on me. Much closer to how I imagine Reacher and he is very pleasing in the eye so a definite thumbs up from me.
tapdancingmum · 06/02/2022 23:30

Haven't seen the programme but will look out for it but you are talking about the second to last book not being good. Is that Blue Moon by any chance as I've been trying to read that since Christmas as I can't seem to get into it. I normally do a Jack Reacher book in about a week but am struggling with this one.

Maggiesgirl · 06/02/2022 23:31

Hated TC in the film, just not Reacher. This one is more like how he is described - Leiv Scheriber will always be who I saw in my minds eye though - enjoyed the first two prisoners, will watch the rest tomorrow

Change123today · 06/02/2022 23:41

Binged watched it this weekend. Was so disappointed when Tom was given the role, this series has redeemed it for me.
Really enjoyed it and will be interesting to see how series 2 develops the character.
Now to get back into reading the books!

decisionsincisions · 06/02/2022 23:41

Just watched first episode - much better casting than that TC bollocks.

I kind of thought he was playing it kind of "witty" when I think our real Jack Reacher is a bit drier. I like it though.

Watching ep 2 tomorrow!

SiobhanSharpe · 06/02/2022 23:43

I binge watched the series the other night and recommended it to DH as much better than the film(s) with TC.
Much preferred this actor, even if he was almost too beefy! IMO his hair seemed to get a bit lighter as the series progressed.
Loved the Harvard chief police detective and Neely (so pleased to see they included her character from the books. And she is ace. )
But I missed the cameo in the diner! I will have to go back and rewatch now to see if I can spot whoever it is. If it's who I think it might be - did they have a cameo in one of the films?

ElinorOliphant · 06/02/2022 23:44

Should I read the books before I watch the series?

I know I don’t need to but are they good?!

SiobhanSharpe · 06/02/2022 23:51

They're easy, fast paced reads.

I think it depends what you're after. They're not deep and meaningful literary works. Good for an easy beach read though. A little predictable at times.
knittingaddict · 07/02/2022 06:30

I haven't read any if the books and saw one JR film with TC in years ago and I'm really enjoying this series. My husband agrees. It's very entertaining, doesn't take itself too seriously and the lead actor seems to have decent comic timing. I like it.

Sidge · 07/02/2022 08:37

Started this this weekend and have seen 4 episodes now. I’m a big Reacher fan, have read nearly all the books (am struggling with The Sentinel and have Better Off Dead to read). Hated the TC version of Reacher, but enjoyed the films as a stand alone action movie.

I’m really enjoying this! Reacher is very easy on the eye, almost too good looking for Reacher as he’s supposed to be huge and muscley but not a looker. Sort of craggy and interesting but not a pretty boy and Alan Ritchson is pretty.

Despite that I am loving it. I think Ritchson is doing well to capture the essence of Reacher - he looks all blank and inactive (not Autistic Arnie as a previous poster says) but his brain is in overdrive as he works out maths and time and force and motion etc. That must be hard to convey. I don’t see him as robotic and lacking emotional depth - the whole point is that Reacher is detached, unemotional and can appear blank, but is intellectually deep and thoughtful.

Anyway I shall carry on with it!

BlingLoving · 07/02/2022 09:09

Binge watched this weekend. Mostly, thought it was excellent. The actor does go a smidgeon robotic when he's trying too hard to be Reacher, I think. And he's got his weird walk which irritated me. But otherwise, I enjoyed it a lot and actually thought the slightly more humorous angle worked well in terms of the show.

I am pretty sure I know when the cameo happened, but I didn't understand it? It jarred and in fact, I rewinded and rewatched it because I didn't understand it but it seemed like they'd made a point of it. If it was a cameo, that makes more sense - who was the man? Surely not Lee Child?

haggisaggis · 07/02/2022 10:52

Watched 2 episodes so far - plan to do one a night. Have read all the books and agree TC was not the best Reacher. Still not sure of this actor though. Seems too clean cut, and mannerisms not quite right

FredBair · 07/02/2022 11:54

Personally I always like to read the book first but you don't have to.They are gripping, formulaic thrillers. Written in a very easy to read style. Not great literature but sold in millions. I've read them all and love them. My teenage DS loved them as well, we used to make up Reacher plots together Grin. We enjoyed the way the series stuck to some of the regular features of the books; he always arrives in a strange town by bus, orders coffee in a diner, buys new clothes when his are dirty etc.

All you binge watchers, I can't imagine watching 8 episodes of anything in one go! First of all I couldn't sit still that long, I usually watch an episode over two days but secondly I want to enjoy it for as long as possible.
I was sorry that Lee Child stopped writing. The publication of a new Reacher book was always a treat.
I agree he is slightly robotic but I can overlook it because he looks right and I like those little humerous quips.

Huntswomanonthemove · 07/02/2022 12:06

I watched the first episode last night. Reacher isn't right for me. He should have longer, dirty blonde hair, and be less clean cut. He also comes across as a bit autistic in this.

Dunno if I'l keep watching. Is it worth it?

BIWI · 07/02/2022 12:54

Of course he's clean cut - he's ex-army!

MissConductUS · 07/02/2022 12:59

@BIWI

Of course he's clean cut - he's ex-army!
Agreed, he went to West Point, an elite military academy, and left the army as a Major. He's not going to go shaggy after that.
BasiliskStare · 07/02/2022 13:02

@Huntswomanonthemove - only you will know, I thought Reacher was a bit too muscley but I think he can in part capture the "Reacher said nothing" - I would give it another episode or two and see what you think - I really enjoyed it.

I do like the way in the series he just buys clothes and throws them away and in one episode ends up in a T shirt which says - my son went to NYC and all I got was this lousy T shirt. I think the surrounding actors are good and over the series I thought the actor playing Reacher sort of settled into it.

In his day I reckon Liam Neeson could have made a decent Reacher - certainly better than TC.

But I enjoyed it - other opinions are available. The one thing I would say he seems to use a phone and drive more than the books say. But - nit picking.

SpiderVersed · 07/02/2022 13:09

We watched the first two last night and loved it!

Reacher is supposed to be a man-mountain and all clean cut ex-military, saying nothing. I think it’s great casting. He doesn’t come across as remotely “Autistic Arnie” to me. He holds his counsel and observes what’s going on.

TC was the opposite of Reacher, he’s chatty rather than taciturn, small rather than a giant slab of a man.
