I’ve just watched it all. I’m a sobbing wreck now.

Anyone else watched?

Did anyone pay attention to the videos? Were they all different? I think it would have been more realistic, but more boring to watch, if he had played the same five favourites over and over again. How much of their marriage did he spend videoing her, FFS?

ashorterday · 22/01/2022 17:15

Have to say, I've loved the other series (apart from the annoying therapist) but was totally disappointed with series 3. I was really looking forward to it but it failed to deliver - nothing new, just seemed like a watered down version of the other two series.

Actually I like this idea. It would have been much more realistic, and also even sadder, with Tony watching the same few videos over and over again.

I guess with Lisa's videos to him too, the idea was that videos were their "thing"?

Mooserp · 22/01/2022 21:15

I wish he'd toned Brian down, just as you start to feel some sympathy for him he says something vile.

Love Kath. although I would have preferred it if she'd just got a dog and not paired up with Pat. The yoga class was spot on and heartbreaking.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 23/01/2022 07:56

Just watched the final episode and just felt I was being preached at. So many long speeches from Tony about the meaning of life. I ended up disliking his character because he was so sure he was right about everything.

UserBot999 · 23/01/2022 07:59

I liked it overall but that weird character (Brian?) who was acting out what Roxy's punters probably did with her, that was ridiculous. Not funny at all. I was watching it with my 18 year old daughter and she thought it was disgusting and weird as well. Otherwise it was a good show!

Pikaso · 23/01/2022 08:03

The Brian character was a lot funnier in Derek (as Kev) because in that he was an alcoholic which at least gave some reason for the way that he was. Brian is just weird and unrealistic and the way he drools over the young lad makes me feel quite nauseous.
In a previous season he was encouraging him to shove cake in his mouth and was acting like he was getting really turned on by it. I was under the impression at the time that the lad was a minor and it made me feel really sick

Same! Just the dog would have been perfect.

I balked at Anne calling him her Angel and such a good man! Did she know how vile he was to his beloved wife's brother I wonder!

“Angels do exist, they wear nurses uniforms”

Balk! I’m a nurse and get sick to death of these “angel” comments. In all my time of nursing I’ve maybe met 2 nurses that actually go above and beyond for the love of the job. The rest of us are simply doing our day job.

Don’t even get me started on the fucking Thursday clapping during Covid.

lollipoprainbow · 23/01/2022 09:40

@Pikaso exactly ! I imagine she was referring to Emma who wasn't particularly nice I don't think.

Pikaso · 23/01/2022 09:46

I quite liked Emma but was glad they didn’t get together at the end, she deserved better.
Did make me laugh when he drew the face on the lime (I think it was a lime?) and she just ignored it and sliced it down the middle 😂

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 23/01/2022 09:47

@JaniieJones

I also found him wandering into the care home calling the man with dementia Dad just odd and disrespectful. They are vulnerable people you don't treat them like that no matter how well intentioned or how many lolz Gervais wants to get.

I'm surprised no one suggested it was in incredibly bad taste when they were filming.

I disagree, correcting someone with dementia is far worse, and the old man did keeping calling him his son.

She deserved different , so did he. They just weren't right for each other.

I have a suspicion than Lisa and he were like the Catherine Tate couple who laugh at everything and find everything they say hilarious.

Pikaso · 23/01/2022 09:51

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor god yeah, I used to know a couple like that, it was really tiresome. They carried on like a comedy double act trying to make everyone around them laugh with their false arguing and snide comments to each other. It got boring really quickly

I hated that he was looking for the same reaction his wife had to the drawn on face. I wanted to tell Emma to get out right there and then.
lollipoprainbow · 23/01/2022 10:03

The lemon scene made him and I realise that she wasn't the woman for him. I really believed in him and Lisa as a couple. She was so smiley and fun, Emma quite uptight and cold !!

Imabouttoexplode · 23/01/2022 10:04

@Flavabobble

I was a bit disappointed... Found some of the characters and situations clichéd. Same old, same old. Loved the first two seasons.
Same. Not nearly as good as the first 2.

To me, the lemon scene confirmed his utterly unreasonable expectations and how unwilling he was to see anyone in a favourable light compared to saintly Lisa.

It was sad really. Not so a much a 'he got grief right' rather a this is how some people stay blinkered and damaged for the rest of their lives.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 23/01/2022 12:34

Really underwhelmed by this series, having loved the other two. Things I liked were:
-Kath - the yoga scene was heartbreaking
-The Penelope Wilton scenes
-Visiting people for the newspaper articles

Things I disliked were:
-Andy and how much of a twat he was to people
-Emma - really cold
-constant cunting - oooh so controversial Hmm

Could have finished brilliantly after two series 🤷‍♀️

AvonCallingBarksdale · 23/01/2022 12:40

Forgot about Brian - wtf was that??!
Also the constant “Oi you cuuuunt” in the videos was too ott to be believable IMVHO

I didn’t see her as uptight and cold. I thought she was really warm and showed him a lot of patience and kindness.

The other scene I hated him in was when she went to hold his hand (or link his arm?) and he shook her off and scoffed at her.
He might as well have said ‘You’ll never be good enough for me’ He was horrible to her.

It just goes to show what depression does to a person. We’re constantly being told by Lisa what a good, kind man he is.

Is he though? Did grief change him or was she always the only one he was bothered enough to be kind and decent to? He obviously got a lot from the relationship. Nobody else seemed to offer him anything he anted so he treated them like shit.
The exception being Anne - she constantly told him how good he was ... just like his wife.

UserBot999 · 23/01/2022 14:06

I thought Emma was too warm to Tony

sociallydistained · 23/01/2022 14:10

I liked the part where they said friends - always. I loved that aspect of the show that he was trying but failing and he knew it would be unfair on her in the long run. I also love Ashley Jensen and Ricky together. If you’re an Extras fan you’ll know they played best friends in that with an air of will they won’t they but they remained friends.

Why was he so awful to his bil? It didn't make any sense.
